These salts are frustrating for me also. One of my problems is getting my mind to kick in. I started researching many of these years ago and at first I listed all the references I used...Somewhere along the route I thought I'd only write down the references other people would recognize. Now I see that was a big mistake. Still I think seeing the history of the patterns makes them more interesting for a true collector -- Gives them life in some way. Ok, so now you really know I'm nuts.

Judy, I'll have to look at the other page and see what we'll still need. I had to take a few days off. My frustration is kicking in again. These contemporary salts are frustrating to me. I'm very glad you have most of it in control.

Morning Debi ... I think I found a salt that matches H&J 906 in amber. Problem is -- It is in a USPS truck somewhere in PA. When/If it gets here I'll post pictures.

I've looked through my files for salts H&J 864 through 892. In addition to the repeated salts I have #867 with a plain blue rim, #873 in clear, #875 and 876 in cobalt, amber and two greens, #879 Lacy in clear, #880 in opal (mine are not repros), #882 in green, clear and crown tuscan, #889 I have several enameled salts.

Judy, Thanks for the pictures. I'll work on catching up. I don't think this green was ever called canary yellow. The MMA salt came in clear, blue and canary yellow. The HFM was made in clear, blue and green. Your comparison pictures of the Moon and Stars are great. As far as the English Hobnail goes, that one is anyone's guess. This stuff does make one nuts.

H&J 896 - English Hobnail Pedestal
Debi I've gone through Ed Bowman's info and the write ups I have and I'm now nuts.

I see in Bowman's info on Rosso and Summit that the WESTMORELAND MOLD was sold to Summit then Rosso in 2006. I didn't find information on when the Smith mold was sold. Ed Berg (Salty Comments no. 19) talks about Rosso making a repro of Smith's ruby carnival retaining the Smith "S" mark. Berg also references H&J 4458 as being from Smith's mold 203-2-3. The book also has this white milk glass salt at 4476. They do not have the Stars/Cross Hatching in the top row of hobs. H&J doesn't say anything about marks on any of the pedestals...329, 539, 865, 896, 4458 or 4478. I know it is odd but most of the salts I have with the "WG" Westmoreland mark are likely made by Summit because Westmoreland put the mark on the mold so late after they started producing the salts and Summit ran with it in place.

To me the salt I have looks like the salt at 896 ... Ruby Carnival with no cross hatching in the top row of hobs. If it is a Smith produced salt it works, but if it is a Rosso repro it doesn't. Bad news is I can't say for sure which it is.

Judy, apparently Westmoreland did make this salt. I don't know if it was made in anything other than milk glass though. This image was to be used for an ad in the 1950s. Someone on the EAPGS forum posted it. I looked on the Corning website and they do show that they have a 1952 Westmoreland catalog but it isn't online so I can't see it.

Judy, Rosso is like Wright. Neither made any glass they sold. Rosso's glass was made by Summit or Mosser. Ed Bowman says the English Hobnail Pedestal was sold to Rosso in 2006. That's way after H&J was printed so Summit probably made the one shown in H&J. I don't know who made yours though. As far as different pictures for similar salts, I've been trying to stay true to what is shown in H&J. So the blue Moon & Stars on this H&J page is Wright. The one on the previous page is Smith. A side by side picture of your Wright and Smith should show the base and scallop difference. But different views of each should be on each corresponding page. I swear, on some of these I feel like just saying it's anyone's guess who made the darn thing! No rush on any new pictures. We'll be doing the previous H&J page next so if you want to take those separate pictures at the same time, we'll be using them soon. I'm glad I decided to put Bowman's info on these pages. Works out well and saves a lot of explanation and color lists at the top.

I asked about the 1952 Westmoreland catalog on the EAPGS Facebook page. Sid Lethbridge (who wrote the Campbell, Jones book) says he is not sure if the salt had a scalloped or smooth edge because it was not pictured in anything. Still waiting for someone to come up with that Westmoreland catalog. After looking through the gallery of PEARL pictures I'm thinking the smooth edge is Campbell, Jones. It's identical to the larger covered dishes. In that case, it would be impossible to tell if the clear one was made by Campbell, Jones or Clevenger Brothers. Perhaps all those clear ones with the scalloped edge are actually Westmoreland.

Hello again Debbi...Good job spotting the flat base on the Weishar salt. I corrected the post below. This is indeed one of the most frustrating patterns to ID. When I started on it several years back I was fixated on the difference between the "MOONS". The Adams moon has a small triangle at the bottom of the circular moon, while the others have a more teardrop shaped moon. So that separated the Adams one from the balance of the others with a flat base. The L.E. Smith salt has a pronounce ring around the edge of the base...So that identifies the Smith salt. The L.G. Wright salt has a flat bottom and is unmarked. The Weishar salt has a flat bottom and is marked on the inside bottom.

The Smith salt does have a more pronounce SCALLOP. Are we going to do H&J 870 and 903 with different write-ups and photos? Do I need to take pictures of the scalloped edges?

Debi -- According to the trace I did on the English Hobnail Pedestal salts the one pictured at number 896 may have been reproduced my Rosso.
* Summit reproduced the salt from Westmoreland's mold...Some of them with Westmoreland's "WG" mark on the bottom inside of the foot.
** The L.E. Smith molds went to Rosso. In Ed Berg's Salty Comments No. 19 he commented that Rosso sold the salt with the "S with G & C in the Loops" mark. This salt is iridescent, which may account for the top row of points being shorter.

Measurements are the same. When I took photos of these I took only the side views. Do you need additional views? Are you thinking about redoing the other H&J references?

Judy, You're going to hate me with all these questions I have. On the 903 Moon & Stars, is your amber one the LE Smith salt? In the LG Wright book, it says that Weishar Island Mould & Machine Company produced Moon & Stars molds for Wright. According to Ed Bowman, the new Weishar salts with the Weishar mold was Weishar buying the mold from Wright in 1999. So that would mean that Weishar salts also have a flat base. I don't see a prominent ring base on that black salt. It looks to me that Smith is the only one that had the slightly bulging ring base. Another very slight difference I see between the amber and all the rest in that group shot is that the scallops look more pronounced on the amber. H&J 870 looks like it matches your amber one and H&J 903 must be the Wright version. I know you mentioned the difference between 870 and 903 because of the base and I completely agree because the scallops look different too.

Judy, do you have other views of your 896? This is clearly a Summit salt because Westmoreland and Smith have the sharper tips. I am referencing the other H&J numbers for Westmoreland examples but I think this is the only Summit pictured in H&J unless there's another on a page we didn't do yet. All this cross referencing is giving me a headache. Also, are the measurements the same as a Westmoreland salt?

I'll save the pictures for that H&J page. Also a picture of of all three in a straight row. Thanks. The pleurisy is almost all gone. I think I'll be able to sleep laying down tonight. That H&J 903 looks red but I think it comes in at least green and amethyst, and with or without enamel painted flowers. See the ones on the previous H&J page. They have an oval optic design in the glass. I bet someone has at least one but doesn't recognize it from the H&J pictures.

Debi hope you are feeling better. I've been in bed for the last 15 or 16 hours. Just have not been able to sleep.

The Zipper I have in clear, number 911, isn't usable. When I found it in the drawer I thought it was the same, but it is CUT not pressed glass. Also a much better grade of glass.

I was able to get a picture of the Henry Ford Mark and will send pictures and info next.

Morning Debi...I saw the amethyst Dewdrop that Brenda has up. I think she also has a green one with a smooth rim. My best guess about these is on track with your idea that they are reproductions by Clevenger Glass Works.

My TIME LINE goes like this:
1. Scalloped Rim ... Campbell Jones & Company's No 296 aka Pearl was first in 1877, clear only, discontinued in 1970
2. Smooth ... Clevenger Glass Works reproduces Pearl circa 1939 changing the rim to avoid patent infringements. The Star on the bottom is also sloppy.
3. Scalloped Rim mold may have gone to Westmoreland but the company didn't make it. Mold then goes to Degenhart who made it with and without their "D" in a heart mark. Produced in several colors.
4. Scalloped Rim mold then goes to Boyd who produced the salt in colors with their "B" mark circa 1970's? Boyd was almost religious about marking their wares; so it should be easier to identify their salts.

H&J No. 911 ZIPPERED ruby -- 3/4 view (I also have this in clear, will put it up as soon as I locate it.)

PATTERN DESCRIPTION: ZIPPERED

MANUFACTURER(S):
Imperial circa 1960
Summit

Notes: Imperial used to make "National
Treasures" for Sears. Produced with actor Vincent Price as sponsor. Made with a special mark.
Imperial made a ruby without the mark in 1965. The mold was bought by Summit who made the salt in several colors.
Summit added a rose to the design - so the zippered only salt has become hard-to-find/scarce.

Summit No 300 Zipper
Sold to Rosso in 2006

Comparison image. The Wetzel salt is quite wonky; I suspect it would have been exactly the same size as the others. Is it the iridizing that slumps it???

H&J 910 Holly Rim salt
Original mold by Wetzel in the 1970’s.
Ed Bowman recorded that this one is found in vaseline and marked R Wetzel 1977; light blue iridized marked R Wetzel 1976, and green iridized marked J.St.C.
Joe St. Clair could have produced the iridized for Wetzel, as they were doing iridized glass for others at the same time. There could be other iridized colors by St. Clair.
This example sits a bit wonky and measures 2 x 7/8 tall. It is marked R Wetzel 1976 in the bottom.

Judy, you didn't need to change any info here. Just wanted to let you know your green one had a Mosser mark. I could see it as soon as I enlarged the picture. I do not have great eyes any more. Used to be able to see close up and a great distance. Now everything is fuzzy both ways without my 2.75 glasses on. And thanks for the picture of the mark.

Debi somewhere I picked up information that Clevenger Glass Works sold the MOLD to Westmoreland and in 1952 Westmoreland sold it to Degenhart. I didn't see info that Westmoreland made any salts from the mold. So goes the mold story. Probably better to omit the Westmoreland reference unless they made the smooth rimmed salts?????

Jan, I have 913 so no worries there.

Judy, those Dewdrop or Pearl salts were also made by Clevenger Brothers. Maybe those are the ones with the smooth rims. Clevenger Brothers was big on repro bottles. I have booklet on Clevenger that shows some of what they made. I'll start working on the ones you added. I just saw you have Clevenger listed, but Westmoreland? Where is that from?

Your Page is more clear than the page in the book...Thanks. So now I need to get on the older iMac and get pictures and description info together. Then I transfer written info and pictures to a flash drive to transfer to the newer iMac. Finally sending it to opensalts.us. This is the process I use because I'm too cheap to buy new Word software and I can't find an upgrade for my Nikon camera picture software.
