Seb, whose card would be failed if the EFL didn't take place after they got the cards, nodded awkwardly and conveniently didn't say any more on the topic. "Yeah, see you later Brandy," he said in his usual comparatively subdued tone, before leaving her to her task.

"Cards? What cards?" Brandy asked, seemingly confused by the lack of timeline with EFLs and the fact that if this EFL took place after they got the cards she would have failed several EFL posts ago (probably in the first post for this chapter). But, you could also read it as her playing along since discussing the cards is against the rules. Your choice, really. The fourth wall is shattered, anyway.

"Anyway, good talk as always! I'll see ya around, Seb!" she exclaimed before returning to rummaging through the wardrobe. Masks, gowns, and suits all comically flew out from the wardrobe as she searched so desperately for something important...

Seb nodded, already moving out into the room. "You may be right. We need to set aside time to achieve the conditions set by our cards, anyway. Good luck with that, by the way. I'd ask how it's going but that would probably be a rule violation."

"Well, you might be right 'bout that last part," Brandy said, tossing the mask she'd been holding aside. "It might be high time to call it a day, wouldn't you say?"

"An interesting way of looking at it," Seb said with a smile. He even almost laughed. "Still, don't let me put you down too much. You're at your best when you're going all-out, and that's what we're going to need right now. I'm not sure there's much else we can do here, though," he added, gesturing around the walk-in wardrobe.

"So kinda like, instead of a hype man, a de-hype man?" Brandy wondered. "Interestin'..."

"Ah, well... I just don't want you to die, ultimately. I guess that's all I'm getting at," Seb admitted. "You don't need anyone telling you to work hard, you've got that down just fine. So I thought, maybe you need someone to tell you not to overdo things."

"Damned if I do, damned if I don't, I s'pose," Brandy said with a quiet chuckle. "Maybe you're right. I can't prove myself to naysayers if I'm six feet under, that much is true. N' maybe tryin' to prove myself anyway would have the opposite effect. I dunno. It's also true the world ain't so black n' white, but..."

...

She laughed. "Sorry! I jus' don't really have a counter-argument to what you're puttin' down. You've got a good head on your shoulders, y'know."

"That... does sound bad, yes. I'd like to say otherwise, that the world isn't like that, but honestly I think Shizune had similar worries. She didn't mind her disability herself, but felt as though most of the people on the expedition only really saw her as a burden. She felt like she was alone down here, and... that's probably part of what led to her doing what she did," Seb said sadly.

"So, I think I can somewhat see where you're coming from. Yet despite that, what you said concerns me. If you push yourself too hard, and just end up getting yourself killed, I think that would be the worst outcome. You won't be able to prove yourself to anyone if you're dead: they'll just see you as a cripple who tried too hard and died because of it, who might have been able to avoid it if you'd been 'whole'," he concluded bluntly.

"You flatter me, Seb," Brandy said bashfully. "But all o' that... it still ain't enough. I have to keep doin' more n' more until we get outta here. If I can't prove to the world that I'm still capable..."

She trailed off for a moment. "Sorry. I jus' feel like to some I might look pitiful. An amazin' treasure hunter whose livelihood was ripped out from under her. A cripple. Invalid. The whole year after I broke up with Bennett n' then lost my arm n' eye, I felt worthless. As if God 'imself was testin' me, n' I failed... n' now that I lost Charlie, I keep havin' the thought that if I ain't livin' and givin' one-hundred-percent, then she died for nothin'. Doin' plenty ain't enough. Plenty ain't a hundred-percent."

"So either way, it's yet more magic," Seb concluded irritably. "Still, I guess that's another option available to us, trying to piece this weirdness together. So long as we keep at it, we should be able to do something, and if not at least it's better than just giving up.

"Though actually, that reminds me of something. Before you said you wanted to avoid being 'useless', but, you were one of the ones working hardest in that last trial. Probably the one before that as well, but I wasn't in a good head-space for appreciating it. You're already doing plenty, you know."

"I don't think Enola is exactly like whatever Nail is, but rather, an entity with abnormal n' borderline paranormal abilities," Brandy concluded. "Of course, there's still aspects of the mystery we ain't even seein' here, so it's hard to piece it together on our own."

"Wait... Actually, you're right," Seb said, realisation dawning. "The only one who could open the door was Haley. Would that mean... there's a chance Enola's also a, well, whatever Nail is? But unlike Nail, she's connected to this in some way, I agree with that."

"That's the kicker, Seb. I don't believe that Enola is 'stuck' here, constantly one area ahead of us. She's gotta be connected. If the mayor went out of his way to send us down here because of her, complete with this whole scheme, I don't think Enola is simply a coincidence. N' if she's constantly a step ahead of us, that means that she somehow managed to get into this buildin'. That itself is unnatural, since the only one of us who could even open the door is a changelin'. It's my belief that she's connected to the mayor, Belphegor, the cult -- everythin'!"

"Part of me wonders if Ivan, or the mayor, simply hates outsiders," Seb said nervously. "Of everyone, Shizune in particular didn't seem to at all deserve being put in this game. But she told me she moved here wanting peace and quiet. It might explain why she, Lavender, Oliver and some of the others were brought along: they're not Rattlewater natives, which makes them 'impure' or some such nonsense. Even if that sounds dumb to you and I, cultists and the like often express that sort of mentality...

"I know what you mean about Ivan, though. The mayor still seems like the one responsible for a lot of things as a whole. But, honestly, if anything that makes me all the more certain about Ivan. It was the mayor's idea, but Ivan was the one who 'masterminded' the game under his orders. He might have thought it made sense at first: he'd help Rattlewater and achieve some form of twisted justice. But now that he's seeing it all play out first-hand, maybe he's having second thoughts. I'm not sure anyone could stay entirely sane after baring witness to all of this and knowing it was their fault."

He grew silent for a few moments. Perhaps he'd realised those feelings were similar to his own as he watched himself take part in so many of Bennett's murders. He didn't say anything about it, just searched a few pockets pointlessly for a bit, then remembered his earlier promise and forced himself to look back at Brandy again. "Um, anyway, you're right about Enola. That part is still weird. I was thinking, maybe she's simply one area ahead of us? While we were in the first caves she was in the ice cavern, while we were in the ice cavern she was in the replica town and so on. The killing game rules say we're stuck here with only each other, but maybe that just means no-one else is in the areas we've currently been granted access to. I'm not sure what the deal with those poems is though... They make it sound like she's entirely uninvolved with the game, here only for her own reasons, yet it's quite literally only because of her that the mayor was able to send us down these caves in the first place."
