Micah’s thinking to herself about her attempt to poison Ciro. Reflecting on it, she feels quite bad for what happened despite her rivalry with the man, especially after Benjamin broke his hand in the last tribunal. She decides to go have a talk with him.

Ciro is working at his shop quietly when he hears someone entering. He looks up in surprise to see Micah, looking quite anxious. Immediately, Ciro scowls. “Well, what do you happen to be here for?”

Micah flinches slightly. “I-I… well… I just wanted to check up on how you were. I’d imagine that Benjamin had hurt you quite severely in the tribunal-”

“And what would you care about that?” Ciro snaps indignantly. “It’s not as though you’re any better than that crooked prisoner. Don’t think I’ve forgotten about your thievery.”

“I… that’s-”

“It’s only by luck I managed to get this belt back. If I hadn’t, who knows what you would have done with it?” Ciro glares. “Perhaps you would have used it to even murder me as well, hmm?

“I… Well, you’re no better! You could have killed everyone by causing that cave in!” Micah yells.

“Well, I was right there, wasn’t I?” Ciro folds his arms.

The two argue for a couple of minutes, each quite stubborn and sticking to justifying their own behaviour despite Micah appearing remorseful earlier. The volume in the room quickly increases and the two are almost at each other’s throats. Ciro keeps insisting that he was in the right to do what he did and seems quite furious at Micah, who appears to be quickly losing the argument. The fight ends quickly with Micah leaving in a huff, yelling some quite uncouth names at Ciro as she exits. Ciro turns away, ignoring her completely as he returns back to his place calmly, as if the fight never even happened.

As Micah leaves, she feels quite angry. Maybe Ciro deserved what he got after all with an attitude like that! She goes back to the historical society building and steams on her own for a while. She’s fuming with many emotions. Something’s strange about Ciro to her though. Despite his broken hand, he doesn’t look to be in too bad a shape, all things considered. Did that poison really affect him at all? Something’s strange… She spends the rest of her time inside the museum, pondering over what’s happened. Maybe the poison’s taking its time… Even still, it’s unusual that it would take this long to have any effects on him.

She spends some time on her own upstairs. She introspects to herself quietly.

3:30 or so

Micah suddenly hears footsteps. She turns to see Daniel and Ivan.

“Did you see anyone around here, soldier?” Daniel barks simply.

“Hmm? No, I didn’t. It’s just me here.” Micah shrugs. “Why do you ask?”

“We’re… looking for someone. We saw suspicious activity here and we traced it back here”, Ivan explains, looking at her suspiciously.

Micah flinches. “What, you’re accusing me? That’s ridiculous.”

“Let’s not”, Daniel grunts. “I don’t think we’ve got anything against her, Ivan. Sorry for bothering you, maggot. We’ll be off.” He nods and the two leave the room, leaving her alone again. What could’ve that been all about..?

After pondering for some more time, Micah goes out to see what’s going on. Suddenly, she looks around and sees a car approaching her! She freezes in horror… She’s trapped, like a deer in the headlights! What is she going to do? As the car makes it to her, she feels someone jump and push her away… it’s Ciro! What on earth? She quickly backs away and falls and loses track of what’s going on. As she lays on the ground, she hears a crash happen, so she gets up and runs to check it out.

Investigation (Don’t read until after body discovery, you fiend!):

Micah, Matt, Brandy, and Nail investigate Second Street.

This street contains the bowling alley and the hospital.

Star Lanes:

The group checks the bowling alley first. Inside, they see that there’s a broken gambling machine. It has glass all around it and a bowling ball smashed through its face. Next to it is another machine that they can see has a receipt sticking out of it. Seems like somebody played the heck out of this machine, blowing several hundred dollars on the machine.

The group next spots some footprints that seem to enter the building from the fire exit in the back. The footprints go up to the shoe counter and stop. They go behind the counter and find a whiteboard flat on the ground there. It seems to be covered in a magic circle. Had someone been using magic? Nail points out that it seems to be a transportation circle and that he had read about it just today. The transportation spell connects two of the same type of circle and allows one person to travel from one to the other by standing in it and saying a magic word. They also find a pair of shoes that are covered with oil stains on the sides. They seem to be about the average size for a man’s foot.

They go into the bowling alley’s office and they see that someone has turned alarms off in the building.

They check the bathroom and find some blood on the side of the sink in the women’s room, along with a strand of blue hair.

The last thing they do is they go out the fire exit into the back alleys. They find that there’s a puddle of oil right outside the door and that there’s two sets of the same shoe’s footprints moving away from it in opposite directions. One clearly enters the bowling alley, the other clearly moves into the alleyways some more. They follow the prints but they slowly fade after snaking around for a while.

Rattlewater Hospital of Mercy:

Next, the group investigates the hospital where Nail and Shizune stayed this morning. The lobby seems to have nothing strange about it. They go up to the floor that Nail and Shizune are on.

First, they investigate the medicine room. It seems like someone dug through it extensively earlier.

Next, they dig through Klifford’s office. It seems like whatever notes he kept in here aren’t here now. He’s definitely done tests on Shizune the last few days, but none of the results are present. Otherwise, a couple of everyday painkillers are here.

Next, they check out Nail’s room. One of the walls seems to be strangely empty, like something is supposed to be hanging there and yet isn’t. There’s a big bloodstain on the floor where it hasn’t been completely cleaned, but Nail points out that his hand broke back open last night and made a mess. He holds up his hand to show the others, and they catch a glimpse of all the bloody gauze on his hand that must be barely holding back more bleeding. The room contains a window that overlooks the street. Nail’s mask and robe from last night are here.

Shizune is resting in her room. They tell her the bad news about Ciro. She looks distraught, but Brandy comforts her as best she can. The room is similar to Nail’s room in terms of the layout, with the same window overlooking the street. There’s a big whiteboard on the wall that outlines a schedule for Shizune. It seems like all her tests were over the last few days. They see that on the desk next to her is her typewriter and typing supplies. There’s also a whistle and a bell. The whistle is clearly the one used to get Bruce, and the bell must be for summoning Klifford. There’s also a strange bottle of medicine on her side table. They read the label and find that there’s a long list of deadly side-effects like heart failure if it’s misused. The room itself looks squeaky clean, as if it was cleaned up recently.

Armory - Sebastian, Benjamin, Micah

Inside the armory, the group finds a can of red paint. Sebastian makes a comment that he thinks the red paint was originally in the stairway area. Sebastian also makes note that clothes and the tools have been moved in general like maybe they were sifted through for some reason. They find a big pile of clothes in one corner of the room. Hesitantly, they lift the clothes and underneath is glistening blood. The group gasps. It seems the clothes are all stained, and as is the ground beneath them. The group does not find much else of interest.

Micah sneaks into the mess hall at 4:45. It seems to be currently empty, everyone else staying outside waiting for the feast to start. She closes the door behind her slowly, and takes out the poison bottle she obtained from the altar room. In her time here, she’s been starting to grow desperate. Seeing Ciro cause the cave-in didn’t help matters either. He trapped everyone inside for a reason… Maybe this is his way of trying to eliminate the thief who stole his belt. Either way, he can’t be trusted. She needs to take care of him and try to escape… There’s no use trying to look for Enola. This mission isn’t her priority anymore.

She sneaks off to near the kitchen entrance, where Ciro is currently cooking for the feast. She sees a bowl labelled with his name, and decides to empty all of it into the bowl quietly. Suddenly, she notices Ciro turn in her direction and quickly ducks out of the entrance. She’s quite lucky he didn’t see her. She quietly leaves the mess hall and goes back outside as if nothing even happened. Hopefully her plan works out…

“Well, ‘eck.” Brandy glances at the icy lake, with the thin ice surrounding it. There’s a huge hole nearby, looking quite recent. “She must’ve been too much for the ice to handle.”

“Her wheelchair mustn’t have helped matters either… Speaking of, it looks like it’s gone down there as well.” Micah glances down into the lake. “It doesn’t look like it’ll be easy to get it back.”

“Yeah, looks like it.” Daniel grunts. “With the weight of the thing, it’s probably at the bottom of the lake by now.”

“That’s quite unfortunate. It doesn’t exactly help matters either that we’ve lost it.” Benjamin shakes his head. “At this rate, people could see her as an even bigger target.”

“What?! Nobody’d do such a thing!” Brandy protests.

“Of course, that would be the humane thing to do. But there’s no point denying the fact that she would be the easiest person to kill out of everyone here.” Benjamin says darkly, his voice still emotionless.

There’s an awkward silence for a few moments as people look away.

“Hold on.” Daniel suddenly says. “I think I see something floatin’ over there.” He gestures to the hole in the ice lake, where Claudia is currently floating at the surface.

“Oh, right! How could we have forgotten? Without Claudia, Shizune can’t exactly communicate with us, can she?” Brandy says. “We better take this to her!”

Matt goes over and slowly picks it up. He grunts. “This don’t look right. Looks like it got fucked up a bit when the girl fell in.” He takes it and starts going into the other igloo. “I’ll fix it up and give it to her, aight?”

People seem surprised by this generous display of his, but are pleased at the same time. Figuring that there’s little else to do, they all go back to whatever they were doing previously.

“Alright, everyone!” Ciro calls out from the mess hall. “The feast is ready! You may all come now and enjoy yourselves! There is enough for everybody here!”

Hearing the announcement, people slowly start to drift towards the mess hall. Benjamin and Matt both enter first, followed by Micah and Brandy. Several minutes pass by but nobody else seems to come.

“Hmm, is this really all we have?” Ciro purses his lips, looking somewhat disappointed. “...Well, no matter. I’m sure the others are all simply taking their time. In the meantime, though, you may all feel free to take your seats. I shall start serving food to you in a bit.”

The others eye each other, concerned, but decide to sit down. Very conveniently, there are 10 seats in total- 4 on each side of the table and one at each corner. It looks more like a place for a banquet, really. A rather cheap looking banquet, but still. Ciro soon comes back wearing some odd looking rubber gloves which are pink in colour, in clear contrast to his outfit. He takes them and uses them to handle the dishes, which he gives to everyone currently present.

As he starts distributing the food he’s prepared, the others hear someone else entering the room. They look around to see Klifford, his eyes quite tired yet a warm smile on his face. By his side is Shizune, whom he helps over to her table. She appears to be in a different set of clothes and wearing a new coat now. She looks to be quite tired as well. As Klifford helps her take a seat beside him, she takes out Claudia and quickly types up a letter, which she passes onto Matt.

As Matt reads the letter, he flushes slightly and grimaces, looking almost embarrassed. “Ay, you don’t gotta thank me for nuttin’, girl. Just doin’ my bloody job an’ all. You don’t gotta owe me a thing, you he-”

“Oh? What does it say?” Ciro asks out of curiosity, looking at Matt.

“You can read it for yerself if you wanna, brat”, Matt sputters, throwing the letter in his face. Ciro, unperturbed, begins reading out the letter.

“Dear Mr. Gustily,

I would like to thank you for personally retrieving Claudia from the icey waters she was dropped into thanks to my carelessness. I would not have expected anything from anybody, yet you heroically managed to rescue her and even fix her before delivering it back to me. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to repay you.

With many thanks,
Shizune Takata”

“Oh, what’s this?” Ciro raises an eyebrow. “Did something happen with Shizune?”

“Indeed. She fell into the water by accident, and lost both her wheelchair and her typewriter.” Benjamin summarises in his usual tone. “Unfortunately, her wheelchair couldn’t even be recovered from the depths of the cold lake.”

“Yeah, I had to go take care of her for a while after that. She was feeling pretty bad after that spill she took.” Klifford says, Shizune nodding along with a grateful look in her eyes.

“Ah, I see. Quite unfortunate, really.” Ciro shakes his head. “You’ll need to have some more food to make up for that.” He takes a bigger blue bowl and puts it on her side instead.

“Well, isn’t that nice of ya”, Klifford chuckles. “This is a good way to break the ice, huh?”

People seem very unamused by that joke, most of all Shizune. Brandy tries chuckling awkwardly, but it doesn’t exactly help raise spirits.

Matt eyes Klifford irritably. “Doc, if ya make another shit joke like that, the ice won’t be the only thing that’s broke.”

“Hey, uh, what’s going on?” A voice comes suddenly from the doorway. People look to see Bennett, looking quite confused.

“You’re rather late. What took you so long?” Benjamin asks.

“Ah, well, that’s my bad. Totally forgot when the feast was starting and only decided to go check now. Hopefully I haven’t missed out on much, though.” Bennett explains.

“Not at all, the feast is just starting! Come and help yourself”, Ciro says generously.

“This only leaves Daniel missing, though. I wonder where he could have gotten to…” Micah mumbles quietly.

Bennett takes his seat and the food gets served to all. Everyone starts eating comfortably. There’s a bit of small talk across the room but overall the mood isn’t particularly chatty. Everyone seems quite pleased with the quality of the food though. It’s clear Ciro’s put a lot of effort into crafting several mouth watering, stomach filling delicacies.

As the group eats, they hear a grunt behind them and see Daniel arrive, his face comparable to a rhinoceros. He takes his seat wordlessly and starts eating. People are surprised by this behaviour and ask him what took him so long, but he says nothing, oddly unwilling to explain himself. He simply stuffs himself with more food, clearly quite starved.

The rest of the feast thankfully goes much smoother, with not much else happening. People finish eating slowly and depart. All the food’s over now, and everyone’s stomachs are filled up. It’s safe to say the feast was quite satisfactory.

Everyone leaves by 6:45, leaving Ciro to clean the dishes by himself.

You feel pretty uncertain about making it out in such a state like this... Maybe knowing someone's vice could help you out. Maybe someone like... him. You glance at Ciro and when he isn't looking, you quietly tug off his belt to use for the rite and then hide in the shadows so he can't see you. Noticing that something's off though, Ciro quickly realises his belt is gone! You see him race to a nearby support beam and kick it with full force. It suddenly bends over, looking like it's going to give in! You let out a scream in horror as you realise the mines are going to collapse. You see him run off as they do and quickly follow him, barely making it to the upper ice caverns as the mines collapse. It seems... you're trapped here now. That Ciro! What on earth was that goon thinking?!

You, Shizune and Lavender are recruited to go examine the base camp for any clues.

Shizune and Lavender help fill in Micah on what’s going on, though Lavender does most of the explanation. At the end of it all, Micah appears staggered. “I can’t believe it… Is it really true?”

The other two look pretty regretful. Shizune just gives a short nod. “Well, we should try and look around anyway!” Lavender says. “That way, we can at least try and ascertain what happened tonight!”

The three look around, though there isn’t much to look at. The tents all seem in fine condition, though there appear to be a trail of muddy footprints leading back into the white tent. The tent with all the resources from the hideout also appears to be mostly untouched.

As the three seem to think there isn’t much else left, they notice a small rock in the corner. It seems to have been sat on for a while. Nearby is a piece of paper. Shizune picks it up and looks at it. “What does it say?” Lavender asks, and in a second Shizune types something up on another paper and passed it to her. Micah also peeps in to read it.

“Dear Ms. Fae,

This appears to be the log for the night, taken in shifts by Mr. Ivanov and Mr. Kennedy. They have noted down what they saw in their respective shifts. I recall that Mr. Ivanov asked me for a paper before I went to bed, so this is most likely what this was for.

I hope I was helpful in this matter.

Shizune Takata”

“I see… So what does it say?” Micah asks, to which Shizune just shows them the paper for them to read.

Shift 1:
Officer on Shift: Ivan Ivanov
Time of Shift: 12:00 AM to 3:30 AM

12:00 AM- Start of shift.
12:15 Am- Benjamin returns from wherever he went. Tried to get details from him but he wasn’t willing to elaborate. Very suspicious.
12:40 AM- Bennett asks to leave camp so he can go. Decided to let him but warned him not to take too long.
12:45 AM- Sebastian asks to leave camp. Seemed pretty nervous about it but he definitely needed to use the bathroom.
1:15 AM- Bennett returns back from going. Looked pretty dirty but didn’t want to talk about it.
1:20 AM- Sebastian returns from camp. Looked pretty scared about something. Insisted he just fell into the quicksand but there has to be something more. Need to keep an eye on him.
3:30 AM- End of Shift.

Shift 2:
Officer on Shift: Daniel Kennedy
Time of Shift: 3:30 AM to 8 AM

3:30 AM- Start of shift.
7:10 AM- Nail wakes up. Asked to use the bathroom so I let him go.
7:45 AM- Nail comes back. Looked pretty pleased about himself.
8:00 AM- End of shift.

“Huh…” Micah shakes her head. “That’s weird. Doesn’t look like much happened in the second shift.”

“I’m surprised by it too!” Lavender agrees. “Still, this is quite vital evidence, so we should take it with us.”

It doesn’t appear there’s anything else noteworthy about the camp. Soon after, the three get called to the Tribunal, and they all leave.

You leave immediately after the performance ends at 11:30 to do some exploring. You’ve decided that sleeping’s for chumps anyway, but you also want to look at the altar some more. There’s a lot of stuff that fascinates you there, such as the various inscriptions on the wall and the strange drawer you noticed back when you discovered the room itself.

You walk through the tunnels, choosing the path on the right. You hear footsteps several meters away. Those must be from Carrie, most likely. You stop by the altar entrance and go under. You take out your torch as you gaze in wonder at the room. It’s about 11:45 now. You take out your notebook you brought with you and note down the various inscriptions on the wall. You stare at the wall, trying to decipher what these all could possibly mean.

You manage to gather a few points after an hour or so. Apparently the inscriptions speak of a city of legend that was great and prosperous. Several centuries ago, however, a nightmarish demon from below was summoned and brought upon terror to the town. The devastation it caused was unmatched, and the city was brought down, crushed like a bug. It appears the demon’s power was so huge that once he had finished bringing destruction onto the town, he dragged it back down back underground where he came from. Curious, quite curious indeed…

It appears this demon is the subject of a lot of these strange inscriptions. These further go on to detail other cruel acts of his and how he was finally banished into the underworld for eternity, till another maleficent soul felt it fit to summon him back into the world.

Looking around, it does appear this altar is dedicated to this demon. There are several drawings on the cave depicting this wrathful creature in all of his glory. His name is scrawled atop one of the walls. It appears to be… Belphegor. How ominous sounding. You shake your head, somewhat disturbed by all this vivid imagery. You check the time now- 3:15? Geez, that was a lot of work… You feel oddly sleepy now… That was a lot of work. Maybe you should just rest your eyes… just for a moment…

You lie on the floor, too tired to leave the room. You shut your eyes…

Suddenly you hear a scream come and you wake up. Did that come from outside? You quickly get up and go look outside. You don’t see anyone there… Maybe you were just dreaming? You check the time now. 4:40?! That was way more than a moment! You go back down to the altar, determined to continue working in spite of all this. You see the forgotten drawer laying in the corner and go over to see it in more detail.

Upon closer examination, you realise that it’s more of a safe than a drawer. It has one of those locks on it with several symbols on it. It appears to enter a combination of some sort to open it. You tinker with it for some time. Around 5:10 or so, you overhear some strange whining in the far distance. Thinking nothing of it though, you continue with your work.

Some time after 5:30, you appear to hear footprints coming from near the altar entrance. You tense for a second, but nobody comes. Then you continue for a while. Finally, you crack open the safe. The correct combination of symbols spell out ‘poison’. Curious… You look inside and find a small transparent bottle, labelled with a picture of a skull.

So this must be a poison, huh… You sneakily take it with you, deciding not to mention anything about it when you return. It could prove useful soon, perhaps. You then close the safe.

And that’s enough work for the night, you think. You check the time one last time. 5:50? You need some sleep, pronto! You notice that the strange whining has stopped now, and you rest your head on the floor. Once more, you’re too tired to go out, so you fall asleep silently.

You wake up much much later. The time is… 8:30?! By god, you’ve overslept! You quickly get up and run out of the altar to find the others to see what you’ve missed.

General character info: You're a well renowned archaeologist who moved to Rattlewater a year or so ago. You've been quite eager to explore the underground tunnels of the city for quite some time now, and have been requesting the mayor permission to go down and see what's within. One day, while exploring the nearby area surrounding the cave entrance late at night, you see a figure walk into the tunnels. They appear to be in a white dress and have a strange air about them. They disappear suddenly and you hear what appears to be a scream. You quickly approach the caves but... they're gone! You immediately go back to the town and notify the others about this, and thus a rescue mission is organised. It appears you'll be going down into those caves after all...

People you recognise:

Ciro- One night, when you were digging around outside the town looking for anything of interest, you heard someone come up to you and get tackled. You lost your consciousness and when you got up, you were in a hospital bed. It appears a man- Ciro- attacked you, confusing your tools for weapons. He caused quite the injuries to you too. Since then, you bear a huge grudge against the man, thinking him to be all brawn and no brains.

Ivan- You've heard of the man before. He appears to be quite a staunch and proud man, willing to do anything for the good of his city. Apparently, one of his officers was the one who dealt with Ciro after the incident. You find him quite a respectable fellow.

Oliver/Lavender- These two performers are quite well known around town. They've performed in several places and are local celebrities of sorts. Lavender especially is popular due to her bizarre nature. You've gone to a couple of each of their shows and have mostly enjoyed it.

Nail- A strange, unnerving man. You haven't gone to ever receive advice from him but he appears to be quite mysterious. Several rumours have circulated around town involving him, believing him to be quite demonic in nature. You personally don't believe in it, but he does strike you as quite an unusual fellow.

Brandy- A well known treasure hunter whom even you've heard of before. You have nothing but respect for her and her various exploits. You've visited her home before to view the various artifacts she's collected from her travels over the years. She appears to be quite a friendly woman at that, too.

Charlotte- A bit of a suspicious woman. You know of her exploits of stealing from the trucks that pass through the highway and donating all she takes to the town. She's a rather controversial figure. Some have praised her as the Robin Hood of Rattlewater, others have called her just a petty thief. She appears to be quite proud of herself, either way.

Enola- Of course, you're the one who managed to see the woman disappear into the caves. Once you reported the discovery, you found out more about her. Apparently she was a poetess whose works have sold quite well in Rattlewater. You haven't read any of her works but she does sound like an interesting woman. It would be best to find her soon.
