Brandy nodded in agreement, as she had had far too many sleepless nights in her life. That night was probably not a good time to have another, so she bid farewell to Nail and returned to her tent.

All she could think about as she tried to go to sleep was the fact that some poor sap had to make pants for him.

"People believe what they will. Whether it's true or not, doesn't matter. They'll stick to what they think they know until the day they drop."

Nail shook his head with a sigh. "But I think that's enough heavy talk for tonight. There'll be time enough later for more conversation like that, but for now... I tire of such topics."

Brandy sat there silent for a moment. Was it fear? Paranoia? No, she was unfazed by the rumors about Nail.

"Well, I know you ain't any o' those things," she said. "And as long as you don't let people get to ya, you'll be fine, which you seem to be."

She sighed. "Still, it's a darn shame so many people can believe such things about a generally nice guy."

"You don't know?" Nail was honestly surprised about that, but he smiled. "I must say, it's not every day I meet someone who hasn't heard of me and my... exploits."

He leaned back and started ticking them off one by one. "Some think I'm an incarnation of Lucifer himself, sent to tempt the wayward souls of Rattlewater to their dooms. Some don't think I'm Lucifer, but still Satan. Yes, there is a difference, depending on who you ask. And some go so far as to say I'm just a lowly devil." He snorted at that. "Well, those are the three most prevalent. And most of the rest are some variation thereof. You know. I pay for my things with the souls of the damned, and barter my way into things with crimson blood and jewels dredged up from the underworld. Ridiculous things like that."

“Well, even if I wanted to bring up any rumors, I’m afraid I ain’t never actually heard any. I’ve heard of rumors, but I never actually took the time to listen to one.”

She looked over at him. “Why? What’re folks in town sayin’?”

"Then I am quite certain we will have no issues, Miss Brandy." Nail nodded to the adventurer. "And I appreciate that you apparently have decided to not acknowledge the rumors surrounding me. You have my thanks; it is difficult enough as it is to avoid being blamed for everything."

"Well, I wasn't gon' pigeon-hole you if you put bread on the table through shady dealings," Brandy quickly reassured. "I mean, I've had my own less-than-clean experiences with makin' money."

She stared into the fire once more.

"Everyone's circumstances're different. As long as we all understand each other, we'll be finer than aged wine."

"That's a trade secret, Miss Brandy," the abnormally tall man evaded, sitting back down. "I have my ways, and they work. Nothing illegal, I promise. I simply make deals with people."

"Huh. Well I'll be," she said. "So, wait, do you charge a fee for advice? How do you make money?"

"Something like that." Nail stretched up. "I usually go out of town for a fair distance in order to get them. I dislike paying more than I have to, and both custom jobs and having them delivered racks up the cost. Being my height only complicates things, and things being complicated is not good."

He bent over, touching his toes. "Though the shop owner here and I have an... arrangement. I give free referrals and get a discount on custom pants for myself. Quite a nice deal, if I do say so myself."

"Yeah, I'd... rather not talk 'bout the arm right now," she replied. "Oh and, don't worry 'bout my health, I can do jus' fine after a sleepless night. Thanks, though."

She watched him dust off his clothes when suddenly another question popped into her mind. "Say, do you gotta get your clothes tailor-made? I don't imagine any ol' store sells trousers for someone your height regularly."

"... Hm." Nail scratched at his head. "I see. Then you lost your arm during one of your many adventures, I suspect? Though, of course, you don't have to tell me any of that if you don't want to. After all... I wouldn't want to reveal my own secrets to someone I just met."

He leaned forward and stared into the fire, the shadows flickering unevenly across his face, almost like it was creating a mask of some kind over it... and then he leaned back, and the effect was lost.

"However, as the Star Duality and the advisor for this team, I must advise that staying up any further would be detrimental to your health." Nail stood, dusting off his much more sensible khakis and dress shirt.

Brandy shrugged, seemingly satisfied with the tall man's answers.

"Well, as a kid I always liked to explore n' hunt for things. Mama always said I'd be a good treasure hunter," she said. "Course she also said lots of other things, too."

The treasure hunter turned to look at the billowing flame. "But I figured that by seekin' out untold treasures I could have fun adventures like in all the movies, and then I could show everyone the neat things I found. Not everyone has the opportunity to see the things I have, so by openin' my museum I figured I could bring those experiences to them."

Nail pondered it for a moment, setting his chin on his fist. "I suppose I've always had a knack for advice, harmful or not. Though sometimes the only advice left is advice that hurts.

"As for when I need advice, I ask myself, of course." He smiled. "I have a bad tendency to answer my own questions when I ask them when I'm alone. But enough about me. What about you? What made you pick your profession?"

"Uh-huh..." Brandy seemed to be getting it. "What made you wanna fulfill that role in people's lives? And for that matter, what happens when you need advice?"

"Whatever is asked." Nail started counting them off. "Romance, pointers on writing, personal dilemmas that range from the simple, such as what new restaurant to go to, to the complex, such as money issues, corruption of relations, democracy, and, in extreme situations, justice and punishment."

He shrugged. "It's not as glorious as your profession, but it is a necessary one nonetheless. Though my advice has a tendency to be... two-faced, so to speak. I have always said that your options are to take my advice or not, thus why I call it so."

"You know, that reminds me." Brandy was messing with her hair now. "I've seen you around town here n' there, but I ain't never understood exactly what it is that you do. You say you give people advice, right? What kinds of advice?"

It was sort of clear she was trying to be a little respectful despite being skeptical of Nail's existence entirely.

"People have a tendency to come to me at all times of day or night for advice," Nail answered rather evasively. "So no, I don't sleep all that much."

He then gave a slight smirk, and gestured to the tents. "Though something tells me I wouldn't get much rest regardless with the band in bed."

Brandy jumped a bit at Nail's sudden appearance, but she quickly returned to an almost normal heart rate and blood pressure. "You startled me there, pal."

She stood up and looked up at him. "Do you not sleep much either?"

Almost like it had become part of his character to randomly show up, Nail seemingly apparated behind Brandy.

"Miss Brandy. Most surprising. I wouldn't have expected you to be awake on this night. But I suppose it makes sense."

Nail sat down across from her, deigning to give her space for the time being.

Brandy, who had been unable to sleep that particular evening, figured that'd she go for a short walk around the area and go back to bed. She looked like, well, she just rolled out of bed, having messy hair and wearing a much more casual outfit with her normal hiking boots.

She quickly became sidetracked when she saw the nicely-sized fire that Nail had started. Not realizing he was returning and unable to see him in the surrounding darkness, she sat in front of it an enjoyed the warmth it gave.

It was the night of one of the early days of exploration. Carrie and Nail, as they had decided earlier, elected to remain outside. Carrie had vanished somewhere into the shadows, and Nail had set up camp just in front of the circle of tents, setting up a medium-sized fire that he fed regularly.

It didn't provide enough illumination to see very far, but it was enough that being snuck up on was rather unlikely. Regardless of this, Nail was keeping a watchful eye on the tents (and the sounds their inhabitants were making, or the lack thereof), the general area around him, and the darkness he couldn't see into.

The man frowned slightly as he stood, walking away from the fire to stare into that same darkness. "I wonder..." he muttered, then shook his head. "No. Too risky. I advise myself to not do it." He nodded firmly to himself, and turned around, aiming to head back to the fire for the moment...
