To Mr. Torr,

Yes, I told my parents before leaving. However, I only anticipated being gone for a couple days at most, so they are probably starting to worry by now.

Sincerely,
Shizune Takata

She handed the letter over with an anxious look in her eyes.

"Ah, yes, I suppose that makes sense," Seb said, nodding. He wasn't surprised to hear that a girl who still used a typewriter was fond of the idea of moving away from big cities with all their technology. Then his expression fell a little as he realised something. "Weekly? It's hard to keep track of time down here, but we've probably been over a week already, and it's likely we'll be trapped even longer. Did you tell them about the expedition before you left for it?"

Shizune blinked in mild surprise before typing.

To Mr. Torr,

In a way, it is precisely because there is little here that I came to this town. I moved here about a year ago to get away from the noise and oversaturation of modern technology in the big city. Far too many people there lose themselves in their electronics.

My parents were concerned about me being on my own, of course, but I write to them weekly to let them know I'm alright.

Sincerely,
Shizune Takata

Seb thought about that for a short while.

"Well, I grew up here," he eventually said, "and even I've been surprised by everything being unearthed on this expedition. Until I met Bennett I thought it was just an ordinary, peaceful town for the most part, and even afterwards I just assumed Bennett was the exception. So you're definitely not alone in feeling that way.

"Now that you mention it, though, I heard before that you were from out of town but I've yet to know the specifics. Did you only recently move here? Why here of all places? I like Rattlewater but even I don't think there's much of note here to draw people in, unless they're retiring like Daniel."

To Mr. Torr,

Unfortunately I don't really have any advice for you, as I have been feeling quite lost myself, even before what I learned about Bennett. Perhaps it's because I didn't grow up here, but I'm starting to question how much I truly know about this town and the people living in it.

Sincerely,
Shizune Takata

She hesitated a little before holding the message out.

Seb shook his head. "I'm in no state to figure that out, I think. I didn't really plan for a future after Bennett stopped needing my help. All I know is that I need to do something.

"Still, I can't blame you for being uncertain now. To the rest of you, Bennett was just a normal guy until that trial. Some might have even called him friendly, though I wouldn't know. That sort of thing makes you wonder who else might be hiding dark secrets.

"Despite that, maybe having faith regardless is what's needed? For the last year I didn't really trust anyone, even moreso on this expedition. I thought that would keep me safe, but in the end the situation just steadily grew worse. Maybe trusting people would have prevented that. Everyone has their own opinion on this; I'm still trying to figure out what mine should be."

After another brief yet awkward pause, Shizune lowered her eyes and began typing.

To Mr. Torr,

Did you have something in mind?

I am flattered that you believe you can trust me, but even though I sympathize with your situation and would very much like to return the sentiment, I am struggling to do so. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure who I can trust here. I feel as if I'm trapped in a constant state of unease.

Sincerely,
Shizune Takata

Seb faltered, apparently having hoped Shizune might speak first. "Well... I don't expect you to trust me after what I did, but I want you to at least know that I want to make up for it somehow," he managed to say, still struggling to find the words.

Shizune's eyes widened a little and she shifted awkwardly. She picked her typewriter up and reclaimed her seat, then gazed at Seb blankly as if waiting for him to continue.

"Thank you." Seb took the book gratefully, but didn't turn to leave, instead lingering hesitantly. Eventually he managed to speak up, and said, "Um... Do you want to talk about what happened last trial? I don't think I was aware of it before, but, I've come to view you as someone I actually trust here. So I want to... do what I can, I suppose?" He was struggling with the words, hoping it would make some sense to Shizune.

Shizune bit her lip, then silently rolled her wheelchair over to one of the shelves. She got up, set Claudia down in her seat, and began browsing the books before her. Within a few moments, she pulled one out and offered it to Seb with a slightly uncomfortable expression.

"Oh, if you're willing to help... Actually, I'm not sure what I want, exactly," Seb admitted. "I wasn't much of a book person before I met Bennett, but after meeting him I feel as though I only really read books to pass the time. So I was wondering what it would be like to read a book that might excite me, I'm hoping it elicits a reaction. Any suggestions?"

Shizune seemed to be harboring her own anxiety; she tensed up a bit as Seb approached her, but after a moment of hesitation, she timidly held a piece of paper out to him.

To Mr. Torr,

Are you looking for a specific title or genre? Perhaps I can assist you in finding one.

Sincerely,
Shizune Takata

"This was more engaging than I expected, so perhaps I will," Seb replied, before waving vaguely as he turned to leave.

***

It was quite a while later that Seb finally met up with Shizune again, after the second trial in fact. She was in the Tribune as usual, though Seb still seemed a little apprehensive, as though he'd hoped she might not be. Not quite meeting her eyes, he said, "Hi, Shizune. Um, I was just thinking of finding a book to read."

After blushing a bit at the unexpected compliment, Shizune quickly recomposed herself and composed one more message.

Dear Mr. Torr,

I understand completely. I enjoyed our conversation; thank you for approaching me. Please feel free to do so again if you'd like.

Take care.

Warm regards,
Shizune Takata

"Really? Everything on a typewriter? That sounds like quite the feat," Seb commented monotonously. "And yet it clearly works out for you. I suppose I didn't give it much thought, but there's some very real talent down here, you included."

He mulled that thought over for a few moments, before abruptly saying, "I'm sorry, I lost track of time a little there. I have some food cooking over the fire, I should get back on that." He stood up, brushing himself down swiftly, and nodded to Shizune. "Goodbye, then," he said, though he had the sense to wait for Shizune to type up any last messages before leaving.
