Seb nodded sadly. "Yes, I thought as much... Of course, everyone else is in the same situation, more or less. My parents, Matt's daughter, Klifford's family... At least the mayor seems to be reassuring people out there, even if it's only to protect his image. But even that won't last."

After biting her lip, Shizune typed away again.

Dear Mr. Torr,

Unfortunately, I am uncertain what we should even do now. Search for an exit? Find Ms. Gardner? I have no idea how to go about doing either of those things. It's starting to feel more and more that there isn't anything we CAN do.

Yours truly,
Shizune Takata

"That was how I felt about all this, early on," Seb said. "We're trapped in an awful situation, and it doesn't seem there's much we can do about it other than accept how things are. Yet despite that, we have made progress of a sort, I think. We might be being led around by our noses, but, we do seem to be getting closer to Enola judging by the poems we've been finding. At the very least we may as well try; that's the conclusion I've reached."

Shizune seemed to consider this for a few moments, then eventually responded with a reluctant, uncertain nod.

"It's definitely easier said than done, but I'd rather try than not, now," Seb said with a small smile. Seeing a smile on him looked almost unnatural with how out-of-character it would have been for him before, but it looked like he meant it. "Actually, I'd like to make a promise with you. I don't know if we'll both make it through this, if either of us will, but even if one of us dies, the other can't give up. We need to keep going, alright? Maybe I haven't done enough to warrant much sorrow if I die anyway, but I guess what I mean is, I want to support you regardless. Out of all of us, you in particular don't seem to belong in this killing game: you don't deserve it, and neither are you trained for it like Brandy or Daniel."

That really seemed to shake Shizune; she trembled a little and placed her fist over her mouth while blinking her sad eyes. After a couple sharp breaths, she started typing.

Dear Mr. Torr,

I don't want to think about anyone else dying.

Sincerely,
Shizune Takata

That, in turn, seemed to surprise Seb, who was stunned to silence for a few moments. After collecting himself, he said, "I'm sorry, I didn't really think of it in that way. But you can't expect no-one else to die from here on, surely? I feel as though you'd only be setting yourself up for more sadness in the future."

Shizune's frown deepened as she wrote up a reply.

Dear Mr. Torr,

I suppose you're right. Please excuse my last response; thinking about it, it was a somewhat immature thing to say.

Regards,
Shizune Takata

"Well, we're in a pretty bad situation, I don't blame you for thinking that way," Seb said in what he hoped was a kind voice. "It just seems an impractical approach, is all. Then again, as I told you before I'm still trying to figure out what the best approach is, everyone here has a different one. I'm hardly a shining example when it comes to making good decisions, anyway."

Shizune shook her head slightly, then after hesitating for a moment, held her hand out, fingers curled and pinky extended.

Seb looked confused for a moment, and that moment dragged on just enough to become awkward before he realised what Shizune was offering. "Really? Alright then, it's a promise," he said, mirroring her actions and lightly smiling.

Shizune gave Seb a faint, awkward smile and briefly locked her finger with his, then slid her hand back and started typing.

Dear Sebastian,

Let us hope we won't need to carry it out.

Yours truly,
Shizune Takata

She shivered slightly as she pulled the paper out and offered it.

Seb nodded. "Of course. I just wouldn't want there to be regrets, for either of us. Regardless of what happens."

She nodded back to him, her smile starting to look somewhat pained.

Seb smiled in return, but his expression faded as he started to grow worried about something. What had looked at first like the pained smile of someone contemplating a sad topic now looked more like the smile of someone smiling through real, physical pain. He asked what was wrong, and began to panic as he noticed other symptoms: shaking hands, and a high temperature when he quickly checked her forehead. "Um, okay, I'll go fetch Klifford, he should be able to help," he said, quickly backing out of the Tribune. "Just hang in there, alright? I meant what I said before, I want to support you. You don't need to go through all of this alone... and neither do I. You helped me realise that." And with that he left, running down the road with unusual urgency.

Shizune nodded gratefully as Seb left. Her eyes darted around for something to distract herself while she waited and settled on a nearby newspaper. She picked that up and tried reading it for a bit.
