"Oh... Yes, I suppose nothing is ever as simple as you might want it to be," Seb commented sadly. "I wonder if Brandy has any plans to go on a trip outside of Rattlewater? You could go with her, perhaps, just for a little while. I've seen for myself just how much some simple companionship can make a problem that seemed insurmountable alone feel solvable."

"Yeah..." Enola nodded, "I think you're right..."

"Still...it's not exactly easy. Dr. Scarface always told me that it wasn't...safe...for me to be in unfamiliar locations. So after that I...never really thought about it."

"But I'm not sure how long I can stay in Rattlewater without...going insane."

"Oh, really? I think that might be a good idea, actually," Seb replied earnestly. "I myself have become well aware recently of how all I really know is Rattlewater. I don't know anything much about the outside world, and all my perceptions are shaped by seeing things only from the perspective of someone living in this small backwater town. For you in particular it might be good to see more of the world: you've got the mind of an artist, staying in one place can only lead to stagnation. Or at least that's how it seems to me," he finished awkwardly.

Enola fell silent for a while, possibly out of surprise.

"Oh...yes, I think I'd appreciate that," she eventually mumbled, "Though in truth...I'm not even sure if I'll stay in Rattlewater. There's such a large world out there I've never laid eyes upon..."

She shrugged. "Perhaps I'm simply getting ahead of myself..."

"I'm not worried about the future. What comes, comes. I've found the present to be far scarier, as that's the bit you have to actually live through," Seb replied. "But still, thank you for your wishes. I really do hope things go well for you too. Once we're out of here, if you ever want to talk, there's probably ways to set up phone calls in prison. No-one should be alone unless they themselves want it."

"It's refreshing to see someone so confident on their future..." Enola said, "I suppose all I can do is wish you fortune, then. Hopefully you'll find some semblance of...peace."

"Strange way to put it," Seb mused. "'Planning' to go to jail. If there was a reasonable alternative I'd take it. But I suppose there is still some truth in it. In our world you go to prison when you commit crimes, so I 'plan' to abide by that.

"Still, being behind bars while the outside world changes so drastically is even less appealing than having to accept it happening in the first place. Yes there's a part of me that would be happy to run away again, hide in jail while the world moves on in a direction I don't like, but I can't be that person anymore. It's the more difficult path, but I have to take it. I have to face my demons."

"Well...you'd be in jail, I guess," Enola said simply. "So everything going on outside...it'd be something of a mystery."

Seb grew confused. "What do you mean? If 'all goes as planned' I won't bare witness to it?"

"I wonder..." Enola added, "Perhaps your town may become an epicenter of magnificent cultural chance. Though I suppos, if all goes as planned, you won't bare witness to any of it...At least that way you can leave it all behind."

"Oh, I agree. It has nothing to do with us being trapped, or Belphegor, or the game," Seb said. "What I mean is that, if I ever do escape, I want to return to the 'real' world, without any of that nonsense. Without magic teleportation circles - because those are a thing down here too - without talking bats, and ideally without towering men who can transform into psychopathic women. But the latter existed even before this game, even if I never saw him shapeshift until after. There is no escape from those concepts if they already exist out there.

"I don't want to be a pioneer for concepts this absurd," he continued sullenly. "Naturally I didn't want to be part of a killing game either, but at least that could be grounded in 'real' ideas, of murder and betrayal. But all this 'magic' just feels... wrong. Yet, it's reality now, and I have to accept it."

"I think you're worrying about this 'shadow' thing too much," Enola said not-so-subtly. "I doubt it has anything to do with us getting trapped here."

"In that case...I guess you could say we're pioneers. Likely the first to discover the strange things down here. So it won't be easy, but I'm sure you'll figure it out somehow..."

"As has been becoming increasingly clear to me," Seb answered in some frustration. "I don't like a lot of that stuff, but since the expedition started I've had no choice but to accept it's real. At the very least I had hoped it was confined to these caves somehow, but Nail contradicted that, and now so do you with your 'shadows'. That sort of thing is just annoyingly illogical, though. Makes it difficult to know how to deal with it."

Enola's head rocked back and forth. "Jekyll and Hyde, huh? But which is which?"

Enola shook her head. "Sounds like some ridiculous bullshit. But sure...I believe you."

"I don't believe in the 'supernatural' though. That's just a fool' she way of classifying what they do not understand. As long as it exists, it's real...isn't it?"

"Oh... Right, yes, I see," Seb said, trying and perhaps failing to sound like he thought what Enola was saying was quite normal. "I suppose that might explain some things.

"Actually, to be fair, I said the supernatural occurrences only started once I came down here, which is true enough. But I knew of Nail even before then. Did you know? Nail's a shapeshifter, or something like that. He can transform into a woman named 'Haley'." As he said this he stared at Enola, curious how she'd react.

"No..." Enola shook her head. "They've been showing up for years. They just appeared more often once I traveled down here...once I started feeling afraid."
