Outside - Nail, Bennett, Klifford, Brandy

Klifford examines the corpse thoroughly. He points at the neck, where there’s heavy bruising around it. Klifford comments that she probably could have been choked out by someone, but it would not have been fatal. He says that the body being so cold makes it very hard to determine the time of death. The body has two wounds: one right in the chest, and a second one still with a spear in it. Both nearly go through the body and would be fatal. They were made with some sort of long, stabbing weapon. The group searches the body and finds a black die, a bag filled with silver tubes that looks like it can be put together, a mysterious amulet around her neck, and a picture book story involving robin hood. Brandy can hardly watch at this point. She asks to take the book, and the others let her. Bennett takes the die.

Bennett quietly walks around the corner of the caves. He saw a secret entrance leading somewhere down below the other day which he had informed Sebastian about, but he wanted to investigate it in more detail as he didn’t get to even go inside. He slowly enters, making sure nobody sees him, and closes the entrance to the tunnel behind him.

As he enters. He tastes metal strongly as he enters, and… suddenly starts chuckling. Something about this feels weird. Is this… nitrous oxide? Oh dear. It’s in quite high concentration too. His chuckles grow into laughter, almost uncontrollable in nature now. He quickly covers up his mouth with a cloth to prevent inhaling anything more as well as to prevent others from hearing him. This is too much, though. He’ll have to figure out a good way to let out his laughter sometime.

The tunnel seems to go underneath. It stops partway through, but you believe you can see something below… It’s the ceiling of the lower ice caverns, icicles hanging through. It’d be handy to use these to murder Charlotte. You believe you told Seb to meet you there with her body right before 6. You slowly get out of the tunnel, now acquainted with it properly. You send a letter to Sebastian then go to the mess hall.

Sebastian and Bennett communicate regularly using Bruce and his letters. The two always find some time to burn the letters afterward. Obviously, both are trying to figure out ways of getting the Bennett the chance to kill his target and generally make sure to keep out any incriminating details. Sebastian has informed Bennett of Charlotte’s weakness. She attaches herself to her material possessions, puts herself ahead of others, and is extremely greedy and petty. Today at around 3:50 pm Bennett sends a letter to Sebastian telling him that he’s found a way into Sebastian’s cavern that nobody knows about yet and that there’s a sharp-looking icicle in the cave right by it. He could knock it down into the target as long as she’s there at around 6:00. Sebastian finds the icicle Bennett is talking about and sends a letter back saying that the operation is go and burns the letter in the fireplace.

Just before 6:00

Bennett feels a little nervous about missing the feast, but shrugs it off. After all, this will be the perfect crime if all goes well. Bennett goes over to the ice and looks down. He's amazed to see that Charlotte is there and unconscious already. He's glad this will all be easy. He knocks down the icicle and it plunges into Charlotte. He begins to see the blood ooze out of her. That seems like it worked. He hurries back to the feast as soon as possible.

“Hey, uh, what’s going on?” A voice comes suddenly from the doorway. People look to see Bennett, looking quite confused.

“You’re rather late. What took you so long?” Benjamin asks.

“Ah, well, that’s my bad. Totally forgot when the feast was starting and only decided to go check now. Hopefully I haven’t missed out on much, though.” Bennett explains.

“Not at all, the feast is just starting! Come and help yourself”, Ciro says generously.

“This only leaves Daniel missing, though. I wonder where he could have gotten to…” Micah mumbles quietly.

Bennett takes his seat and the food gets served to all. Everyone starts eating comfortably. There’s a bit of small talk across the room but overall the mood isn’t particularly chatty. Everyone seems quite pleased with the quality of the food though. It’s clear Ciro’s put a lot of effort into crafting several mouth watering, stomach filling delicacies.

As the group eats, they hear a grunt behind them and see Daniel arrive, his face comparable to a rhinoceros. He takes his seat wordlessly and starts eating. People are surprised by this behavior and ask him what took him so long, but he says nothing, oddly unwilling to explain himself. He simply stuffs himself with more food, clearly quite starved.

The rest of the feast thankfully goes much smoother, with not much else happening. People finish eating slowly and depart. All the food’s over now, and everyone’s stomachs are filled up. It’s safe to say the feast was quite satisfactory.

Everyone leaves by 6:45, leaving Ciro to clean the dishes by himself.

As people start to leave, they all split into various places. Brandy looks like she’s about to wander off but then gets interrupted. “Hey, where’re ya goin’?” Bennet asks, placing a hand on her shoulder.

“Aw, just hangin’ ‘bout. Dunno what I gotta do anymore, really.” Brandy sighs. “I just wanna get the others outta here… See whether Charlie’s alright too.”

Bennett frowns. “Well, you don’t gotta worry. Maybe we can try looking harder while everyone else is out, huh?”

“Maybe.” Brandy gives a small smile. “It’d be nice to spend some time with ya as well, Benny.”

“Alright then, let’s go.” Bennett laughs, dashing off to a corner of the caves. Surprised, Brandy follows him.

They mostly look around for several minutes. The exploration is rather casual as they’re not expecting to find much, so they mostly chat as they look. About their lives, what they’re doing in their free time, how they’re coping, and so on. Suddenly, as they’re looking around, Brandy suddenly gasps. “Is that… an entrance?” She asks, unearthing some snow beneath them to reveal a tunnel.

“...Holy moly.” Bennett’s eyes widen. “What’s inside?” He flashes his torch inside. It seems to go under. The two slowly edge inside. There’s a slight taste of metal, as if the air here is more earthy and old than other places. As they go under, they see that they’re right above the ceiling of the lower ice caverns. They can see through it slightly, but not enough. They have to go down fast.

Sadly though, there’s a big barricade in the way. Unperturbed though, Bennett starts digging through. “You go call the others”, he says. “I’ll try and get through here in the meantime.”

Brandy nods. “Alright, Benny. You keep on doin’ yer thing. I’ll let the others know.” She dashes outside, calling the others.

You suddenly hear someone scream out of nowhere. Turning around, you see that one of the support beams in the mines have been damaged! You see someone run up and decide to follow them quickly. You barely make it into the upper ice caverns as the mines collapse. It looks like some other people are with you... And you're trapped here with them. You quickly eye them all, but you don't see Seb around... or Charlie. Just great.

You’re chosen to look around the jungle area outside the crime scene, along with Matt and Daniel.

“Great, just my luck,” Matt grumbles. “Of course I’m forced to examine the widest fuckin’ thing in here…”

“You shut your trap, maggot!” Daniel yells. “This is a murder investigation, and we’re going to be taking this seriously! So no complaining or loafing around, you hear, lazybones?!”

“Let’s calm down a bit, maybe.” Bennett cautions. “We need our minds to be clear as we look around, y’know?”

Investigating, they all first notice the entrance to the crime scene.

“Huh, that’s awfully narrow.” Bennett notices. “But I didn’t see that before. Weren’t there some rocks and stuff here?”

“You’re right there, soldier.” Daniel grunts. “I remember the last time we visited, there were boulders covering up the entrance. Seems they were removed somehow.”

“How do you do that?” Matt asks. “Those looked pretty damn huge to me.”

“Good question… Either way, they’re all gone. Somehow. Pretty much destroyed, I’d say.” Bennett says. “I guess someone just decided to break it down so they could get inside there.”

As they continue looking around, they don’t notice much else till they come near the waterfall.

“Hey look, there’s something in the pond here.” Bennett picks up a raincoat. It appears pretty drenched and it’s hard to notice much else about it. “You think someone wore it?”

“Could be.” Daniel grunts. “Maybe we should look in there as well and see what we can find.”

The three jump through the waterfall into the hideout. It’s pretty cramped, as you’d expect.

“Yikes, what’s this smell in here?” Bennett gags. “It’s horrible.”

“Smells like shit, yeah.” Matt frowns. “Seems pretty recent as well.”

“Well, at least we won’t have to stay here for long. Let’s get looking, boys.” Daniel says.

There’s not too much in the hideout. There’s some rope near the entrance simply lying around with a first aid box next to it. There’s also a small gold watch lying on one corner of the room.

“Hey look, there’s some tools here.” Bennett picks up a pickaxe, a shovel and a hammer casually laying on one side of the room. They’re all pretty dirty and appear to have dirt all over them.

Other than that, there isn’t anything else of note.

“Great, what a waste of time.” Matt says, annoyed, kicking over a box in frustration. As he does though, the others see another tunnel behind it! They all come over to examine it. It seems to lead somewhere else.

“W-what the hell?” Matt pales. “What did we just find?”

“I don’t know, but it looks pretty suspicious.” Daniel growls. “Let’s get looking, men!”

Unfortunately, just as they’re about to look in further, they hear the call to attend the tribunal.

“Aw, are you kidding me?” Bennett shakes his head. “Just as this was getting interesting…”

“Dammit, can’t we look here anyway?” Matt grumbles.

“Let’s not risk it, men. Who knows what that demon would do to us if he found out? It’s not worth it.” Daniel says.

So the three sadly are forced to leave the hideout and go to attend the tribunal.

As everyone is going to sleep, you take a brief moment to stop and whisper to Sebastian, “Meet me near the waterfall in one hour.”

You glance around to make sure nobody heard you. Sebastian gives a quiet nod in response and you head on your way. You fall asleep at about midnight.

In about forty minutes you get up, not wanting to leave at the same time as Sebastian. You walk over to the tunnel entrances where Ivan is sitting.

“Just got some business to take care of,” you say, in your best not lying voice. “I’ve gotta go real bad.”

Ivan eyes you suspiciously for a couple seconds “Alright well look I’m not going to keep you here if you have to go, but I have my ways of finding out whether you’re lying or not. I’ll also want a full report when you get back.”

Ivan lets you through and you can’t help but wonder anxiously what he meant by that. You take the left path to the waterfall and immediately regret your decision as you see that you are leaving a pretty distinct trail of footprints all throughout the tunnel. You’ll have to watch that you don’t pace around too much as to keep your rendezvous a secret.

You leap across the quicksand pit just barely making it across. Of course, it’s deepest in the middle but if you got it on you it could be trouble. You make it to the waterfall and stand in place for a while, waiting for Sebastian to arrive. You take a couple seconds to make sure that Carrie isn’t lurking nearby. It takes a longer time than you thought it would before Sebastian makes it there. It must have been twenty minutes.

You talk in a low voice to make sure the waterfall masks whatever you are saying to anyone who might sneak up on you. The conversation between you and Sebastian is very formal and business-like. You tell Sebastian that you intend to stick with him and how you have his back if he has yours and all that. Sebastian nods along, listening to your words. You start to mention that you actually have a target here, and that you’re probably going to want to bring her back dead or alive. If Sebastian is surprised, he doesn’t show it.

Right in the middle of the conversation you see the rat-like appearance of Carrie in the darkness of the cave, maybe a couple hundred feet away from you in the cave. Scared that she may have seen something that she shouldn’t have, you pretend you did not notice her, and begin hiking away again trying to be seen as separate from Sebastian.

On your way back you crash into the quick sand on accident, absolutely covering yourself in it. You get back to camp. Ivan looks at you a little amused. “Number one or number two?” he asks.

Looking fed up you shake your head, “I’d rather not say. I’m going to sleep now, as best I can.”

You go to your tent, leaving a trail through camp. You take off your clothes but you still feel filthy. You’d have to take a dip in the river to get rid of this. Maybe tomorrow. You get to sleep after a while.

You are woken up by a loud grunt. You wonder what time it is. You hear a little bit of talking outside and some kind of whining in the far distance. You hear another grunt from somewhere nearby. You notice Lavender still beside you unperturbed, laying completely still. You try your best to get back asleep. Eventually the whining stops, but the grunts keep happening. You hear someone toss and turn nearby in another tent. At some point you drift back to sleep.

You wake up in the morning at 8:00, putting your muddy clothes back on. You decide to join the others for breakfast afterwards.

General character info: You're known as a bounty hunter to the town, but you have another business that you keep secret that you've had ever since becoming a Star Citizen. You only do it once in a while so as to not attract attention, but in the night, you secretly go and kill; targeting only the ne'er-do-wells of society. Drunkards, beggars and the like. Sometimes you leave them be, other times you have them cleaned up so as to not attract attention from anyone. So far though, you've earned yourself quite the reputation around town.

People you recognise:

Sebastian- Your 'accomplice' of sorts. Every time you want to have the bodies cleaned up, you call him over to help get rid of the body, after which he deposits it somewhere in the underground tunnels of the town. You met him by pure accident a year or two back, where he stumbled onto you right after you finished with a target. You were afraid he was going to do something that'd screw you over, but instead he silently took out his mop and started cleaning the body, explaining that he may as well do as such considering the person was already dead. Since then, you both struck up an unlikely alliance. You're both coworkers more than anything though, and try not to acknowledge each other outside of that.

Brandy- Your ex. You tried dating for a while but your schedules were entirely incompatible with each other, causing you to end your relationship about a year before. You try not to think about her too much, though you can't help but miss her. She's pretty fantastic, always acting warm and friendly to everyone and remaining cool despite her disability. Maybe it's fate you both are allotted to go together, though.

Charlotte- Well, isn't this just good timing? Some time back, you received a request from a company whose trucks were passing by the nearby highway and were getting raided. After a bit of investigating, it turned out that Charlotte was the one they were looking for. You've been appointed to bring her back for a hefty sum, be it dead or alive. You believe she doesn't know that you're after her either, so this should be interesting...

Matt- Tch. What's he doing here? You remember several months back, you targeted him outside a bar late at night. Believing you finished him off, you called Seb over to take care of the body for you. Later though, you heard that he apparently hadn't died yet and escaped quickly afterwards. You decided not to pursue him for a while just to be cautious, though. Just bad timing he's here now. You know he's a useless drunkard and not much of a mechanic, so why was he selected?

Ivan- Tough guy, as far as you know. He's pretty strict and seems like the type of guy who's devoted to his job. Best not to cross his path. As chief of police, he's quite the intimidating figure.

Oliver/Lavender- Two pretty stellar performers. You go to either of their shows from time to time, and they're pretty good. Lavender's bizarre nature is quite popular with the cloud, but you have a soft spot for Oliver's singing voice and range as well.

Nail- Pretty fishy guy. He's been in Rattlewater for quite a while now, but little is known about him. You haven't gone to get advice from him personally despite his rather generous rates, but he carries an air of mystery with him. Rumours circulate the town about him being the devil in disguise, attributing his unnatural complexion and height to his demonic powers...

Micah- You've heard of her before. Seems pretty keen on exploring the caves and is generally passionate about archaeology. You dunno much else about her though.

Ciro- You've been to his sushi place before infrequently before. It's not bad but it isn't your thing. Doesn't seem like he recognises you either.

Enola- Ms. Gardner, huh... The surname seems familiar to you... Then it hits you. You've heard of her dad before. Generally a deadbeat guy, not particularly useful. Which is why just a week or so back, you took care of him nicely and had Seb deposit his body somewhere in the caves. Maybe it'd be best to not mention that to anyone... Especially if you do end up finding her.
