"Yeah, I would suggest you be fair as you can be. At the very least, I'll be following the rules, such is my disposition."

"Oh wow, even happiness is being brought to you. It would be nice if I could experience such a thing. I guess this is the gift of being so wicked though."

"Who's to say?" Haley leaned against one of the podiums, smiling. "They've done so well, against even my own predictions. Oh, I know some of them deeply suspect me, for one reason or another, and oh! How that makes me happy! For that alone, I'm considering letting whoever lives free, no questions asked. But... the game is still on. As much as I may want to, if I were to play favorites, that would reduce the meaning of the game. So... who knows? Any one of my names could make it unimaginably difficult, or make it so incredibly easy. I can't tell which is more likely to happen!"

"Oh, of course. It's been very interesting. I do feel bad at how fleeting it all is, but I think I'm getting almost everything I can get out of them."

Belphegor doesn't appear in solid form. The grit of sand on the ground makes it feel uneven and rough.

"What do you intend to do when it ends? Is the end of the game the end of your involvement? I'm simply curious."

Several chapters in a book. Several deaths written one after another. Riddles left behind to tempt the wary and feeble alike.

And now? Now it was all coming together.

Nail walked into the tribunal room, his hands in his pockets. For once, he didn't have the cast of the uneasy advice giver around him; no, now there was a quiet aura of power and intent to use it.

He grinned, the expression twisted and feral, and he spread his arms wide to encompass the room. "Oh! How wonderful! Humans truly were just as interesting as was said! Oh, how I enjoy this song and dance! ... Don't you agree, Belphegor?"

"Farewell Nail. Try your best. Don't go easy."

"After all, I'm interested in how you do as well."

"Indeed. And that is why I started this." Nail leaned onto his hand, an easy smile on his face. It seemed so out of place on someone like him. "Humans fascinate me so. And thus they have been picked to alleviate my boredom. Let's see how well that works out."

He pulls out a watch, nodding to himself. "Unfortunately, it seems like the next chapter is about to start. I should let you get back to it. Can't be knowing too much, now can I?"

"Hmmph. I would say you are bored, objectively speaking. And your test, well, let's just say that it's special. The people here are special. I think you'll find humanity is an altogether different group."

"I do get the appeal of course. I am a people watcher through and through."

"An interesting response." Nail smiled. "I am a fair bit closer than you are to humans, considering my many names, but my reasons for this are... somewhat different.

"The main objective is to see what happens, of course. To test the humans; their resolves, their wills, their morals, their hopes and dreams... and see who breaks. I suppose you could say I'm viewing this as a marker for the rest of humanity... or I'm just bored. Both are the same, more or less."

"I see clay. Formless. Awaiting it's true state."

"I have made friends with humans, I have even fallen in love with them, but I cannot and will not ever be able to truly relate with them."

"I'm a brick. I was born in fire."

Belphagor let's out a deranged sigh.

Nail also stayed silent for a few moments, considering the question.

"Some would consider that my actions up to this point mean that I don't care for any of them," he finally said. "As you pointed out, I damned them all without a second thought."

He turned away from Belphegor, his hands behind his back as he walked around the podiums. "But that's not the whole story, as you say. First, however, a question for you." He stopped at his podium, placing his hands on either side of it. "What do you think when you see a human?"

"Alright. Well it's comforting to know for sure that I can't know."

Belphagor stays silent for a few seconds.

"Do you like them? The others? You've damned them without a second thought, but perhaps that doesn't tell the full story. I of course was telling the truth when I said I have no idea what you are doing."

Nail simply chuckles, and the air grows heavy.

"I am, and I am not. I exist, and I do not. Such is my state of being, with how many names I hold. Though the simple answer is that I am not human. You know me, and yet you do not. Such duality, as is my nature."

"See? Not so easy. But that's why it's fun. If I can get someone like Ivan to break, I know I've done my job right."

Belphagor hesitates for a moment.

"So you're not really a human are you? Do you mind me asking what exactly your nature is? I know much about the human race, but there is not much I know about you, Nail."

"Hmmmmm," said the man thoughtfully. "I suppose I am merely rebelling against the idea of chaining someone to someone else's will. No matter. It is what it is.

"As for better temptations, finding the way out is always a good one. Something tells me that Brandy may submit to that one. She does, after all, have reason to now. Perhaps we may also tempt the police officer... no, he's too wary, and holds to his ideals too much." Nail shook his head. "Unfortunately, I am far better at critiquing ideas than I am at coming up with them. Perhaps it is due to how locked I am in this... disgustingly frail body. No matter."

"If I may defend myself, Oliver seemed very tempted by the amulet. I almost got him to crack. Is it unfair of me to say that to you? After all you are a player in all of this. I suppose I should be careful in what I say."

Belphegor tilts his head mockingly.

"I won't hesitate to vaporize the amulet when the time comes that it's outlived its usefulness. Right now though, I am optimistic that the torture artist will make use of it."

"If you have any suggestions though on better temptations, I am nothing but ears."

Nail chuckled. "Your perfomance is quite acceptable. Though something tells me you could stand to be more... sinister. Perhaps we can deal with that before the next... incident.

"On that note, however," he continued, "I can't help but feel... dissatisfied. The first tribunal set an excellent benchmark, but the second felt... odd. There were too many paths, too many things that could have happened to make finding the 'truth' difficult at best. I have a feeling it has something to do with both the spellbooks and the mind control amulet; especially the amulet. It provides far too easy a way to control the rest. I would see if you could... dispose of it at a later time.

"Beyond that, however, the test seems to be going well. They're well into it now, whether they want to be or not."
