"Oh. I take it that's high praise in Britain?" Seb asked in bemusement. "I think these conversations have been very helpful, too, so thank you for that. I'll make the same promise with you as I did Shizune: if you die I'll carry on in your stead, and I hope you'll do the same with me. I don't have any expectation that we'll all survive, but I think it's best if we keep our heads high instead of letting that thought bring us down."

"Glad to see you coming around." Benjamin chuckled. "I think our conversations have been quite productive. If I could take my underwear off, I may even give it to you."

"You're probably right. At first I was adamant I'd be better off alone, but... I guess I've seen a lot of things first-hand now," Seb said. "Of course, things are made more difficult by the possibility that one of us is the 'mastermind'. I believe your solution to that was that it's statistically better to trust everyone anyway, though? Things do become easier when you can boil it down to a factual analysis like that."

Benjamin nodded. “I guess your head didn’t need as much correction as I thought. I do believe the key here is that at the end of the day we only have each other. We’ll only succeed against our enemies together.”

"'No better than prison'... You might be right, in a way," Seb agreed reluctantly. "Though here, at least, none of the 'prisoners' remotely deserve their incarceration. We've still got the ability to fight back: against Belphegor, against whoever summoned him, against the mayor... It might not be much, but that's still better than nothing. I suppose we just have to keep looking for those openings?"

"No choice." Benjamin mumbled to himself. "So that's where we're left then? No freedom to even make our decisions? This is no better than prison."

"It almost makes me wonder if finding Enola is even the correct thing to do, if that's just another part of the mayor's plan. But I get the feeling, once again, we don't have much choice in the matter: if we want to get through this we need to keep moving deeper into the caves, which also means we have to follow Enola's tracks regardless."

"Good points. Not to mention the circumstances surrounding the mayor, and how he no doubt knows more than he's letting on." Benjamin spat. "A lot would make sense if there was no missing person. And yet I suspect that's not the case, but the mayor wants us to find her for some other insidious reason. Just a hunch..."

"Yeah, I'm not sure what to think of Enola now. You know, the rules of the killing game say that 'Once the Killing Game starts, the players will be confined to the caves with only each other.' Is Enola really here? That rule makes it sound like it's only the 16 of us who were in the caves, and no-one else," Seb said a little dispiritedly. "Either that or her being one step ahead of us, in the locations we're unable to access, counts as her not being confined with us. But if that's the case, how did she access this palace before we did? Only Haley was able to do that out of us, and that was because she's not just an ordinary human. It makes me wonder if Enola's even really in need of rescue in the first place."

"It's crossed my mind." Benjamin admitted. "Perhaps I'm being a bit selfish--putting my own want over the completion of the mission. But to be quite honest, the more people we've lost, the further Enola has gone from my mind."

"I'll... do the best I can, at least. Though now you've reminded me of something," Seb said, taking a seat on one of the steps leading up to the throne. "You've always been willing to be the 'necessary sacrifice' if need be, but have you ever considered that our best chance of making it through this is to have the more capable individuals like yourself survive? At the very least that strikes me as the most 'logical' option."

"Ah." Benjamin slightly blushed. "Well, I appreciate hearing that. I do understand it can be hard to make a choice without emotion but I suppose I'm probably worrying over nothing. You've been reliable, and we only solved that trial because of you anyway. So I suppose I can trust you to make the right choice if it's something really important."

"Well, on the other hand it's somewhat of a relief to know that even you feel that way," Seb said with a slight smile. "You're definitely the most capable person here, you know what you're doing, so in a way it's nice to know that you're still like the rest of us to some degree."

"I believe the right choice is what saves the most lives. There are very few people who's lives are worth more than one."

Then answering his question, "Yes, it frustrates me. I've had to make choices before that I've never wanted to. Choices that I have trouble living with. And yet in this game I feel like what we're given aren't choices at all. What are we even fighting for besides our lives?"

"Yes, and I had the ability to potentially save Shizune. Belphegor was the one who caused her death, just as he was the one to threaten the lives of the two people outside the game. To me, that was my 'something I can do', to make a decision for myself instead of blindly following the rules of the game. But, now I'll never know which choice was right," he concluded with some sadness. "Shizune died before there was any chance to save her, and after that voting Micah was a given. There was no longer a choice, I was merely another piece in Belphegor's game, moving and acting according to his script."

He looked at Benjamin then with more focus than usual. "Does that not frustrate you? You want to do the 'right' thing, but very often in this game we aren't even given the chance to try."

“In that situation, I probably would hand the hostage over assuming all other options are exhausted. But I understand that that’s besides the point.” Benjamin sighed.

“I see what you’re saying, but I believe humans have a moral obligation to act. So as long as there’s something I can do, I have to.”
