Seb nodded. "Yeah, I figured that might be it. Really it was a very, very difficult decision for me. I wasn't at all sure what might be the right choice. But I figure, if Belphegor wants to go and kill people, that's his prerogative. Is it really such a bad thing to save the lives that I can save? And that isn't a rhetorical question, I still don't really know the answer...

"Let me put it this way. What do you do in a situation where terrorists are holding a group of civilians hostage, and will only let them go if you hand over someone of importance, like... a general, or the prime minister, or something. If you say no, and the hostages are executed, then isn't that just the same as all the other innocent civilians terrorist groups kill anyway?"

“Very well. Not voting for Shizune was the wrong choice, whether she was your friend or not. And if she had escaped and survived, I’m not sure if you’d be able to live with the consequences of two people dying because of that.” There didn’t seem to be much judgement in his voice, more just a matter-of-fact tone.

"Ah, really," Seb said slowly. "I might have some idea, but sure, go ahead. You don't need to worry about holding back, I know full well that there's still much I need to learn before I reach an ideal version of myself. One of the best ways to learn is to listen to other people's varying views on a topic."

"Well, I wanted to have a talk with you about the last trial." Benjamin bit his lip, looking a bit uncomfortable. "I understand it's not my place to lecture you, and you're an adult. But something rubbed me the wrong way."

"Oh, hello Benjamin," Seb replied, looking over at him. "I was examining the portraits here. Everything else in this place, the throne room especially, is in such good condition, but these pictures are out of place. I suppose someone wanted to stop us from figuring out who they were... Or maybe they were always like this, and our presence has nothing to do with it. Um, anyway. You said this was 'convenient'?" He turned now to properly face Benjamin, assuming there was another serious matter to discuss.

Benjamin approaches Sebastian somewhere in the throne room, looking surprised. "Ah, Seb. How convenient. What are you doing here?"

If Seb was moved by the sentiment, he didn't show it, instead nodding and waving Benjamin out of the cabin. He then returned to his hobbyist cleaning, though now with a lot more on his mind to mull over.

"Hmph. Well, I once had a comrade who told me that when in a bad situation you have to be practical--anything else just poses danger for someone involved." Benjamin smirked. "But anyway, if you need to tell me anything you know where to find me."

Benjamin headed out, loudly dragging his ball with him.

Even Seb winced at the thought of solitary confinement. "Right," he replied flatly.

"Actually, I must say, you seem to be handling yourself and all this remarkably well. Maybe it's only to be expected, but I still think it's impressive. Anyway, that was all I wanted to know, thank you. I won't hold you any longer."

"Perhaps. Or maybe she was suggesting that things could very well get worse--solitary confinement for one." He waved his hand. "I'm mostly trying to not get disappointed. This expedition is already a luxury, I feel more alive than I have in a long time."

"Yes I... suppose I understand," Seb replied, though with some reluctance. "Though that woman who delivered you here, she said it would be to your 'benefit' to participate seriously. It doesn't sound like they can punish you any more than they already have, so wouldn't that mean there's at least some bonus to all this for you?"

"I have a life sentence, Seb." He said this as if it was something he accepted a long time ago. "I'm hoping to get leniency if this expedition succeeds, but I wasn't promised anything. In fact, I was told to not expect anything and I trust them to keep their promise--my government is quite furious with me." It was clear he wasn't willing to elaborate on those circumstances.

"Oh, that's what you meant," Seb said, realising his mistake. "Still, yes, that sounds rough. I'm sure I would hate it. Why is 'dying in prison' an option in the first place, though? You're young, is there really no chance of parole?"

“Dying here is preferable to dying in prison.” Benjamin corrected. “But yes, prison is quite bad. More boring than you can possibly imagine. You would definitely hate it, it’s filthy too.”

"I'm sorry. There's just one last thing, now that you've mentioned it. Is prison... really that bad?" Seb asked. He had his face-cloth up again, masking his expression. "Bad enough that dying here is preferable to going back?"
