"Hmm...I suppose so," Enola mumbled.

"I'm...glad we could talk like this. Thanks for listening."

Enola turned and made back for the house. She stopped at the door frame, watching silently until Brandy followed, and then continued inside.

Brandy grinned. "Heh, that's good to hear. I wouldn't trust anyone else to tell it, anyway. But, uh, I think I heard the others callin' for us, so maybe we best be gettin' over to 'em, yeah?"

Enola stared off into the distance for a while, perhaps considering that she may have a future for the first time.

"Selfish...I'm the one who only ever wrote about myself," Enola mumbled, laughing dryly. "You're all the most fascinating people I've ever met. Well...perhaps the only people I've ever met. And I think you've got an important fucking story to tell..."'

"So yeah...I'll think about it." She nodded with a surprising amount of confidence.

Brandy took a moment of silence to absorb Enola's words, then perked up, as if she suddenly got a good feeling about something.

"Hey, Enola, when we get outta here, could you write a poem 'bout all of us? I'm sorry if it seems like a selfish request, but I think that maybe your talent might be useful to tell the world 'bout what happened here. It could be an epic poem, like The Odyssey, or somethin'. I mean, you certainly don't have to, it was jus' an idea..."

"It's never that simple though...not really," Enola mumbled, "All anyone ever notices is the flaws...they just blot everything else out. And like a pit of tar, once you've tumbled in...you find yourself sinking."

"I guess that's the point...Everyone knows it takes a lot of darkness before you begin to notice the light..."

Brandy rubbed her chin, deep in thought. "I don't think so--I mean, you can't have light without darkness, hope without despair, black without white, n' so on. It'd probably be borin' n' unsatisfyin' in the end. A world where everyone's perfect sounds more like a nightmare to me. Like a bad dream where everyone's a Barbie doll n' generic n' always smilin' like a creep. Our faults don't define us, but they're part of who we are regardless."

She caught the slight movement of Enola's mouth and raised an eyebrow. "Yeah? I guess so... do unto others, n' all that. Makin' people feel good makes you feel good, n' the world keeps on turnin'."

"It makes me wonder..." Enola mumbled, staring up at the ceiling. "If one could strip humanity of all their vices...achieve perfection. Would happiness truly be universal? Or would it all just be boring...and pointless...? I'm not sure."

She looked back to Brandy again, as if returning to reality. The corner of her mouth twitched a little. "I'm glad to hear that...really. Making someone happy...that's all anyone can ever hope for."

"A person is more than their faults, after all. That's what makes us human. Everyone's got their issues n' vices, but that's part of the package..."

Brandy smiled. It wasn't cheap or forced, but an actual, genuine smile.

"N', um, thanks. It... it means a lot to me that you think I'm inspirin'. It makes me very, very happy..."

Enola still paid attention the entire time, though she wrung her hands and looked away uncomfortably.

"I'm sorry..." she mumbled, "Still, I think you're...very inspiring. It seems like everyone's fucked up somehow. But you've made it clear enough...that you can be a lot more than that. Or at least you can try...and that must be worth something."

"Sorry, I'm guessin' that wasn't the answer you were hopin' for. Um, I guess I could tell you the real story. It's pretty inconsequential at this point anyway...

"It was about a year ago. Some of the details are a bit foggy on account of myself blockin' 'em out, but I'll tell you what I can. I was on a typical adventure, nothin' out of the ordinary, really, until one thing led to another and I found myself taken captive by a cult. The one with that stupid skull n' snake logo we've been seeing a lot down here, among other things. They... took my arm n' eye from me. Or maybe I should be thankful that's what the price of escapin' was. Judgin' by all the things we've come to learn about them, I might've been lucky.

"I really was broken after that. I was pitied by some, but I'll never know for sure because I didn't talk much with people after that. I spent most of my time on gettin' my museum situated. It's not like anyone wanted to talk to me, anyway, aside from Charlie. I had, um, also jus' gotten outta a relationship not long before my encounter with the cult, so I needless to say I felt pretty alone n' depressed most of the time...

"But, when I was told I was assigned to this expedition, I felt a fire in my heart I ain't felt in a long time. Little did I know this whole journey would rip not jus' me, but most of us to emotional and physical shreds. But... even though I put on a brave face, I still am afraid. I'm afraid I won't be good enough to keep everyone safe, n' it's obvious I haven't been, right? I mean there were sixteen of us goin' in, n' now... there ain't. We ain't even gonna live long enough after gettin' outta here anyway... So, I guess I am kinda broken, like you said, um..."

Brandy trailed off. "Sorry for rantin' again..."

Enola seemed to pay attention to Brandy's tirade, or at least her face remained as emotionless as ever.

"Sounds amazing..." she mumbled, "And a little confusing...I've never been out of the country. I've never even been that far from the town...I used to read a lot about other places in my books though. But I'm sure it isn't the same."

Enola seemed a little disappointed by Brandy's second answer. But she nodded. "Oh...yeah. That's an effective attitude to have."

"Alright, well, Jesus Christ pardonne moi for askin'..." Brandy muttered. "I been all over the world, seen it all, you know the drill. I been places I wasn't supposed to, I been places that would make a normal man's mind melt. I been to prison at one point. But, the cultures, them's the interstin' things.

"Did you know the French don't like it when you gift 'em a bottle of wine? It kinda makes you seem like a rude asshole for some reason. I dunno, maybe they feel insulted 'cause you think you got better taste in wine than 'em? Snail-eatin' bastards...

"N' in Japan, like a bunch of other countries, they hate when you leave a tip after a meal! I had cash thrown at me one time 'cause the guy was so insulted...

"Also, a lot of people don't believe this, but I seriously think it was aliens that built them pyramids... there's some weird things in 'em. But, uh, you didn't hear it from me," she said nervously, looking around as if a trained sniper was ready to take her out.

...

After some time spent ranting about different countries around the world, Brandy addressed Enola's second question.

"Anyway, uh, my body ain't broken. It ain't whole, but it ain't broken neither. I'm still jus' as good as anyone else, if not better!" When she spoke, there was a definite sense of pride in her voice.

Enola seemed a wee bit put off. "What is there to say that hasn't already been said? You've already read my poems. I'm a beautiful fucking angel...That's the sum of things."

"You, though..." she mumbled, "That's interesting...What kinds of cultures have you been immersed in? Why is your body broken?" Her eyes just barely lit up with curiosity.

"Um, you know what? Let's jus' switch gears for a minute," Brandy said, sounding a little desperate. "Enola, let's jus' talk 'bout you. Now I ain't gonna try to be like that therapist of yours or nothin', but I think as teammates maybe we oughta try n' get to know each other a lil' better. 'Course, if you ain't comfortable talkin' bout yourself too much, I don't mind openin' up a tad."

She cleared her throat.

"It builds trust, n' I can't help but feel like I might be makin' you uncomfortable with these questions 'bout your brother..."

"I...I wish I could tell you," Enola said, trembling slightly. "Stuck down here for so long...I don't know how he survived without slaughtering himself."

"Though I guess he was always a braver soul than me..."

Brandy awkwardly cleared her throat. It was clear she wasn't the Star Interrogator or whatever for a reason. "Right... well, when we first found his body, Sebastian, bein' the smart kid he is, pointed out that he only died recently, since he wasn't decayin' or nothin'. The papers said Dizzy disappeared 8 years ago, right? So d'you have any idea what he might've been doin' down here? Why would such a good n' lively kid run away to Hell?"

Brandy was half-desperately grasping at straws while trying not to set the poor girl off. A for effort.
