23 July 1922

Lausanne to London, UK.
International printed matter rate 5 centimes for up to 50gms.

The interesting aspect of this is the 2 centimes stamp that was folded and cancelled without being straightened. I guess the clerk wasn't interested in confirming the value of the stamp. LOL

20 July 1866

Bern to Basel, domestic letter 10 centimes.
Cancel a very early use of the first rotation date whell cancelers invented by Güller.
These are known as the "elzevir" style due to the font used. This Bern canceler was the first of the series and issued 26 May 1866. There is only an Aarau canceler of this style that was issued prior to this illustrated use!

16 July 1917

Registered international letter from Bizerte, Tunisia, to Lausanne.
Addressed to the Red Cross office responsible for victims of the war. This section of the Red Cross was established in 1914 to help civilian victims of the war since they weren't protected or helped by the Geneva Convention which only applied to military personnel.

The canceler was manufacturer by Güller in 1912 and shipped with other devices for other Tunisian cities at that time.

Here are two examples of handwriting from 1876 and 1877. One French, one in German.

I was first taught to write using a ink well and replaceable nib pen that had a wooden holder. This as a 5-8 yearold. I can't imagine how fine the point was for the writing on these two cards.

Only one from 1915.
I have it as part of my cancellation exhibit (upper left). This canceler was used at the Lausanne Money Desk office which was a special window in this main post office.
The bottom card canceled by the Zürich Fahrpost (packcage office) was the type used for businesses and others to have the mailman collect fees for subscriptions, dues, newspaper ads, etc, etc. The post office system handles a lot of money since there was really no bankiing sytem for private individuals prior to 1905.

Very interesting stuff. the handwriting back the is amazing. Can you imagine the time spent practicing and perfecting the art of writing. Now they don't even teach cursive in schools. Maybe some do.
