Hey everyone! This is just a reminder that our last meeting is this Wednesday 4/27 in room 1190 at 6 pm. We will be having a pizza party, active graduating members will receive their cords, and t-shirts can be picked up if anyone already hasn't done so. See you then! Have a great last week of classes!

Don't forget that tonight tshirts will be available for pick up in our normal room at 6 pm! Next week is the banquet, which will be pretty busy to be worrying about passing out shirts on top of everything, so tonight is your chance to get them if you want yours before the last meeting!

Hey everyone! First and foremost, I have a study I am working on with Dr. Ahmed. We ran into some problems with SONA, but everything is figured out now. Nonetheless, we are desperate for data/participants (as upcoming research conferences are quickly approaching). If you guys could take the survey below, it would be much appreciated! Only takes ten minutes!

http://eiu.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_40HqJIpLFCHg6Wh

Also Dr. Mace and Dr. Ahmed are running an in-person study on involuntary memories and attention. It is about a 40 minute session, but a $5 participation reward is provided afterwards. Contact either Dr. Mace or Dr. Ahmed for more information.

Thanks, Emma

Hey everybody, I hope your Wednesday is fabulous... I have a bit of a favor to ask you.

I'm my chapter's nominee for Greek Week Queen this year and I'm 1 point away from being in first place (behind the beautiful, talented, and obviously well deserving Catie Witt, for those of you who know her)

But it would mean SOOOO MUCH TO ME if you guys would take the time to vote for me.

A link has been sent to you all in Panthermail, it may have gone to your junk/clutter box though so please check there. The subject line is "2016 Greek Week Royalty Voting"

I would endlessly appreciate you guys voting for me.
Please let me know if you have any questions

If the link isn't there yet - keep checking your email periodically. Voting ends Thursday 3/31 at 2pm sharp.

Hey guys! If you will be here next year and are not currently involved in undergraduate research please consider it because it is very important if you plan on attending graduate school. Most schools like to see students involved in at least 2 semesters. Here is a link with professors looking for students http://eiupsichi.weebly.com/research-opportunities.html
Have a great weekend!

Hey guys Brito wanted me to share this e-mail she received from Dr. Hailemariam regarding the school psychology program.

I am writing to ask for your help in relating information to Psi Chi members regarding the application deadline for the School Psychology program. Although the deadline was January 15, we continue to accept application until the cohort is full.

Students who are interested in School Psychology can still apply. In fact, I encourage them to apply. It is an excellent program with 100% pass rate on state and national licensure examinations and 100% internship and job placement.

If they have questions, they can stop by my office, Room 1437, call me at 581-6615, or email me at ahailemariam@eiu.edu. Application documents and directions are found at http://www.eiu.edu/schoolpsych/.

Hi friends! Charleston's One Stop Community Christmas program is currently doing a blanket drive. A goal of this program is to try to provide one new blanket for every child in need in the area. The drive helps to service about 800 families across seven surrounding counties. Whether you are planning on Black Friday shopping, or just relaxing at home for break, please consider picking up a blanket for a child in need! It doesn't have to be expensive, just a classic fleece one from Walmart is perfect. We will be putting a box for collection in the Psychology office and the blankets must be collected by December 4th. Psi Chi would love to take part in keeping our community warm this winter. Thank you!

Happy Friday everyone! So I'm up late tonight and thought I may forget to post this in the morning so please even if you cannot make it to coffee and cookies today at 1:30 pm in room 3121 take the survey that takes less than 15 seconds so we have a head count http://tinyurl.com/psichicoffee.

Also I just wanted to clarify if you have a legit excuse such as class, work, etc. during the times we have coffee and cookies you will NOT be penalized. Just let a member of executive board know and it will not count against you if you cannot make it to one of the events during the semester. Also do not feel like you have to stay for the full hour. Feel free to leave early or slip in late if needed, it is pretty casual and just a nice way to get to know the faculty and other members. Hope this helps clear some things up! Hope everyone has a great homecoming weekend! Let me know if you have any questions (:

Also please take the survey on when you plan to graduate if you haven't done so already. We will be ordering cords after the meeting next week so we need to have this finalized. The link is http://tinyurl.com/psichigrad. Have a good weekend everyone!

Join ASA, EIU Volleyball, EIU Swimming, KSS, SAFCS, COSPA, ESA, SCEC, PRIDE, KD, BB BS, PRIDE, and EIU Softball in cheering on the 800 GOTR 5k participants along our 5k course in Mattoon!!!!!

Saturday, November 14
Run starts promptly at 9 am from the Mattoon YMCA

At each season's conclusion, the 250 girls and their running buddy complete a 5k running event. Volunteers will line the 5k course to cheer on all participants. Completing a 5k gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The results are the same - making the seemingly impossible, possible.

Simple, engaging and extraordinary. The result? Healthy, confident girls who can.

Hey guys! Please take this survey http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2300864/APA-Grad-App. APA is developing a centralized service for applying to grad school; which means that you would only have to submit ONE application, indicate what schools you want to send materials to and that's it! It would be a lot easier and helpful so have your voice heard so that this process can be easier!

Hi Everyone!

A few updates on tasks..

Anna Farris (Inductions Coordinator) - Inductions are on October 14th. I have all kinds of info for you, I'll meet up with you soon!

Jake Johnston (Service / Philanthropy Coordinator) - October 28th is our service day. You'll need to pay a visit to the Student Community Service Center (in the Union, I believe) and ask about the projects they have available. We would like one that can be done within the classroom during our usual meeting time. Let us know what you find out!

Emma Petersen (Faculty Liaison) - November 11th meeting is 'New Faculty Research Presentations.' No rush, but be thinking of what faculty you'd like to invite in for presentations. We're looking for a few faculty currently involved in research (especially those looking for student help).

Brittney Holman & Kristen Eggenberger - As Social Media Administrator and Historian, maybe you two could work together on photographing events and updating social media. We'd love to see new pictures on the Facebook! If you can't make an event, designate a friend to take pictures for you.

Thank you!

Hello people of Psi Chi! I hope everyone is looking forward to learning together this year at EIU. In the words of Bill Nye the Science Guy, "The more you find out about the world, the more opportunities there are to laugh at it." Let's keep Bill in mind this week and approach our classes with smiles and open minds. :)

Business: I've been informed that we need to reserve rooms for meetings. Natalie, will you work on this for us? Rooms 1411 and 1190 are usually the best fit. Will need rooms for both executive and regular meetings. Executive board will meet this Wednesday, and the whole Psi Chi crew will meet the following.

Hello everybody, I have a few reminders for you.

If anyone is interested in volunteering for Special Olympics and did not pick up a form at tonight's meeting they are also available in the psych office. This is will count as a service activity.

Everyone should be completing two service activities per semester. The service activities we complete during meeting (like the cards we made tonight!) also count as service activities.

There will be a coffee and cookies meeting this Friday the 27th. Please take this survey whether or not you can attend, it's helpful for us to have a head count.

Two URGENT things...

1. Coffee and Cookies-
We are looking for someone who could help us out with managing faculty coffee and cookies as I am no longer able to do it! If you are interested in helping out, please email me at mrperry@eiu.edu and I can give you more information. Basically all you would be doing is going to pick up cookies and making coffee... its super easy. :)

2. PLEASE PAY YOUR DUES IF YOU HAVEN'T YET or else you will no longer be considered and active member.
If you would like to, please leave it in my mailbox in the Psychology Department Office. The office is open until 4:30PM. My box has my name on it and is to the right of the door as soon as you walk in.

3. Who needs to pay?
A. Stephen Simpson
B. Madeline Bicknell
C. Derric Meyer

If there is a discrepancy above, please email me so we can talk about it.

Hey everybody-

I believe there are a few people looking to buy/obtain GRE study books. So if you have any you're willing to sell/give away, please post on the message board and let us know!

As promised, here's the rest of the info I didn't get to cover at tonight's meeting:
It’s better to pick a school with either only a PhD program OR a terminal Master’s program.
Try to avoid a school with Master’s AND a PhD program. The Master’s program will accept a lot more people than the PhD program, however, the PhD program will get all the funding and the resources.
Also, something to keep in mind with graduate programs is that you don’t just apply to a school, you apply to work WITH someone. Usually for psychology grad programs, you work closely with a faculty member, assisting with their research. Before applying to any program, you definitely want to do some research on all of the faculty. Find out about their interests, the research they've done, etc. Never go into an interview without already knowing about the faculty and the program. That can be a kiss of death for your application because they'll think you aren't serious about it.

Schools with earlier deadlines (think December deadlines) tend to be more selective (and also tend to require GRE).

And finally, YES, applying to grad school and taking the GRE will cost you... But in Dr. Brito's words: All those things are an investment in your future. Take out a loan if you have to. Short term sacrifice for long term gain!

I hope tonight helped answer some questions! Feel free to post or e-mail us if you have anything else you're wondering about.

Hey all! Felisha here. I'm a senior and have been in Psi Chi for quite some time. Despite what Brito says, I have only been in Psi Chi for 2 1/2-3 years. I joined when I was a sophomore. I'm currently interning in the Employee and Labor Relations office. I completed the psych major last semester so you all will rarely see me in the physical science building 😞. Anyway, some more general facts about me: I'm from Lynwood, IL (south suburb of Chicago), I am pursuing a career in I/O psychology so any I/O people come talk to me, and I have a twin (she's a foreign language major. If anyone has a Spanish minor or something like that you may see her. Her name's Alisha.)

Hi everyone! I'm Karianne Dvorak and I'm a junior here at Eastern who is a new member of Psi Chi. I'm from Evergreen Park Illinois, just a few blocks away from Chicago. An interesting fact about me is that this I'm a transfer student and this is only my second semester here at EIU. I love it by the way! I'd like to join one committee once I know more about when we would meet.

Hi everyone! My name is Courtney Osborn and I'm a senior here at Eastern who is a new member of Psi Chi. I'm from Danville Il. I'm hoping Fall semester I will be tutoring statistic students in the Sociology Department as well as conducting research in psychology. An interesting fact about myself is that I'm engaged to my high school sweetheart. I'm currently in the process of moving so it's been pretty hectic around here. Can't wait to meet everyone!
I'm not sure what committee I would like to be on. I would need to know the times and days we intend to meet because I work.

Hey everyone! Our first Coffee and Cookies with faculty is this Friday (Jan. 30th) at 2 in room 3121. Don't forget you should be going to at least one of these per semester. It is also a great opporunity to get to know faculty, and it would be excellent if you could come with questions.

Some possible questions could be: What is your favorite thing about being a psychologist? What is your least favorite thing you do as a teacher? What is one thing students do that really really really annoys you? If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?

See you Friday at 2!!

I think it would be very nice for psi chi to host a gathering for graduating seniors and faculty. My brother graduated a couple years ago and his department did this for the graduating seniors and it seemed to work well. It will cost money, but I think it would be worth it personally.

Okay everyone, I'll try to keep this post as concise as possible, I know I'm wordy.
There tends not to be much member input in what we do at our meetings simply because we have to decide the entire schedule at the beginning of the semester. I'd like to be able to do things that everybody wants to do so I have a proposal.
If anybody has any ideas for something that would be fun as a group (seriously, anything), bring it up on the board! If we can agree on an activity, we'll replace what is supposed to be a game night with the faculty on Feb. 4th.

Also, is anyone interested in having Psi Chi host a get-together for professors and students after graduation? I think it would be nice to be able to see them before all the seniors are out of here but we'd be using Psi Chi money.

Hello everyone,

As some of you may have heard, Ashley got an awesome internship opportunity. Unfortunately, it will not leave her with enough time to remain President. So I will be stepping into the role of President, leaving the VP office vacant.

We will be holding an election for VP at tonight's meeting. If you wish to nominate yourself or someone else, you can do so on the board or when we ask for nominations at the meeting. All (willing) nominees will then give a speech explaining why they should be voted in as VP and the rest of the group will vote. No nominations will be accepted once speeches have begun.

Here is the description of Vice President listed on the national website:

Serve as program chair for chapter
Assist chairs of committees.
Assist the secretary in preparing report of chapter activities to send to Central Office.

In addition, in our chapter, the VP also assists other exec members with miscellaneous tasks as needed and, of course, plans the Psychology Department Banquet.
Due to the time crunch, whoever becomes VP will need to begin planning for the banquet immediately. If you are considering running for VP, you need to be absolutely sure that you have the time to dedicate to the responsibilities. Planning will extend through April, this is not a short-term commitment.

Please note that the VP office will be up for election for next year along with all other offices. The election tonight will be for this semester ONLY.

Hey everyone,

Passing on sentiments from the exec message board:

Posting as "anonymous" goes against the spirit of the message board and it is disappointing of honors students and members of Psi Chi. EIU's chapter of Psi Chi does nothing anonymous or "behind closed doors." If you ever have a question or comment that you don't want others to see, feel free to email the chapter President directly. Also, IP addresses are logged with each post, and they are traceable.

As to the question: In fairness to those members who scrambled to sell at least one order to family, friends, or themselves, the executive members and Dr. Brito felt it only fair that the four individuals who did not turn in an order form, and left without talking to an officer, or did not show up to the meeting, and/or were not able to be reached after the meeting, be asked to submit an order regardless. However, because Stephen had to, literally, submit our total order that evening, an order was placed for each of those individuals for one item at the lowest cost of $15. It was felt that that was the most fair thing to do, and wholly in the spirit of the type of individuals who are the members of EIU's chapter of Psi Chi.

AMBER- to answer your question, I have been told that we ordered brownies for you, so you WILL receive something. You can make them and impress your family with your awesome baking skills :)

Thank you to Holly, Maggie, Stephanie, and Kevin for attending the last coffee and cookies on October 10th. 10 members signed-up to go and only the 4 above attended. Dr. Brito as well as other faculty members were disappointed that more students did not attend, and commented that it was very unprofessional of those who signed up but did not attend.

EVERYONE is required to attend one coffee and cookies per semester unless they have talked to a member of exec board or Dr. Brito about a schedule conflict. The next coffee and cookies will be Friday Nov 14th from 2-3.

Message from Dr. Brito:

Urgent Call for a Volunteer: The Psych Department needs a student volunteer to be the Psych Dept Student Representative to the College of Sciences (COS). This is a pretty big deal, although meetings are only once a month. Their first meeting is next Tuesday. I don't know what time nor if that is their regular meeting days...But, I have to submit a name by tomorrow morning. Dr. Hailemariam would prefer the student rep to be a Psi Chi member. As part of your representative role, you will also occasionally meet with her. The volunteer CANNOT be graduating this semester. This is a pretty big opportunity because the student rep is basically the "voice" of all psychology majors to the COS. We (the Psych Dept) needs someone committed and serious about their education.

Let me know ASAP if you are interested. I need to know no later than 11:30AM TOMORROW!

Hey everyone, I have a few notes to pass along to you:

1. Prospective student shadowing program
There will be an opportunity to have a prospective student shadow you. They will follow you to classes, have lunch with you, and experience Eastern from the perspective of an actual student. The first available date is September 22, if you are interested please let us know by posting on the message board no later than Wednesday, September 3.

2. Psychology Department Open-House Tour Guide
On 10/13 EIU is having an Open House Informational Fair and a Departmental Showcase. The Showcase is from 1:00-2:00 PM. "Department Showcases give prospective students and their families the opportunity to take a closer look at academic programs and support services at EIU. Your showcase might include a brief welcome and a tour of your facilities."

In our case, it could involve a tour of our classrooms, clinic, some research labs, the 3805 posters on the walls... It would be good to have students representing the department, give small group tours (15 - 20 min), and answer questions. If you are interested in this let us know ASAP!!!

3. GRE Revised General Test Workshop
A GRE representative from ETS will be on campus Tuesday, Sept. 9, for an interactive presentation titled "More Opportunities for Success with the GRE Revised General Test." This presentation, scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. (bring your lunch), will be held in the Martinsville Room of the MLK Jr. Union. Topics that will be covered include: an overview of the GRE Revised General Test, content and structure of the test, scores and score reporting, test preparation materials, test-taking strategies and additional program resources. Anyone planning to take the GRE and all those advising prospective graduate students will benefit from this informative workshop.

Dr. Allen – Is hoping to recruit 2-3 students for Fall and Spring next year for a project on cyberbullying. He is developing a measure with one of his graduate students, and they are hoping to do some piloting of the measure as well as some focus groups with undergrads about cyberbullying.

Dr. Bernas – Has room for 1-2 students, but they need to be interested in his research topics (e.g., mindfulness).

Dr. Brito – Has room for 4 undergraduate research assistants. Students work in a multi-member Lab.

Dr. Floress – Might have opening for 1-2 students. Students participate on a research team with at least 3 other undergraduate and 1 graduate student. Students participate in direct observational data collection in elementary school classrooms and attend weekly research team meetings. Students are also expected to present research findings when opportunities for conferences arise. Next fall, there may also be opportunities to help assist graduate students with specific teacher intervention research related to observational data collection. Data collection centers around teacher skills relating to decreasing in student disruptive behavior.

Dr. HaileMariam – Has room for 1-2 students; they would serve as undergrad research assistants working with school psychology graduate students.

Dr. Longley – Has room for 2 students. She is looking for those who are exceptionally mature and reliable. She has just been awarded a President's Grant and may be able to pay one of them. One student will be helping her Master’s level student with their project, another will be helping Dr. Longley and an assistant with a therapy intervention, most likely using the automated system to remind participants of appointments and maintaining the database.

Dr. Mace – Has room for 2-3 students. Student researchers will be working on one or more memory studies. Activities will include subject testing, data coding, some simple statistical analyses, literature searches, some assistance with article preparation, etc. Student researchers will also share in co-authorship on journal articles and conference presentations.

Dr. Scher – Has room for 2-3 students. Students who work with him can either develop their own project within one of his areas of research interest, or can work on an ongoing project of his (i.e., Psychology of Prayer, Psychological/Evolutionary Origins of Incest & Cannibalism Taboos, Psychology of Disgust, Social Support—especially in schools). Some on-going projects students could work on are (1) Qualitative study on self-handicapping: Help code examples of behaviors that students report where they sabotaged their own performance to avoid the effects of failure on self-esteem. (2) Experimental studies on factors that may affect prayer (help design stimuli/procedure, Run Subjects, enter data). (3) Are people who get tattoos more attractive? (Help figure out methodology, run subjects, enter data). (4) Mixed-methods study on social support & depression among high school students (Help code qualitative reports of social support)

Dr. Wilson – Can work with 1-2 students. Students do a variety of projects. During the past two years, applied projects have involved: 1) helping students cut down on smoking, 2) helping students moderate drinking, or 3) helping students decrease procrastination; another research project was on the relationship between ACT scores and students success. And, students have also done papers on hoarding, eating disorders, OCD, and sexual sadism.

The department is very appreciative of all the Psi Chi students
who quickly contacted Ann about the job in the Department
Office. Psi Chi members Jared Diaz and Molly Tarter have been
hired for the Office.

Ann wanted me to share this:
"... the availability was the deciding factor. I don’t want
there to be any hard feelings among any of the students. They
all would be good and I wish I had jobs for all of them. Please
let them know that I appreciate their willingness to help out."

On Thursday, Dr. Karen Mitchell, Senior Research Scientist at
Yale University Department of Psychology and candidate for the
neuro-cognitive faculty position, will be doing a job talk from
3:00 - 4:00 PM in room #2120. Dr. Mitchell is "interested
generally in human attention and memory, especially source
monitoring (the processes by which we attribute mental
experiences to sources) and the phenomenal experience of
remembering." Her "research focuses primarily on specification
of the component cognitive processes and neural substrates of
executive function and episodic memory."

Hello Everyone! I wish I was able to sit in on these presentations because I feel like they would be beneficial. Unfortunately as of right now the first 2 are conflicting with my schedule. Hopefully one of the last 2 will not.

Today's presentation is in room #2120 from 1:00-2:00 PM.
Tuesday's is in room #2120 from 3:00-4:00 PM.
And, Thursday's is still tentative; but my best guess is that it will also be in room #2120 from 3:00-4:00 PM.

The candidate on Thursday is Dr. Karen Mitchell. I don't yet have details about her. I will post when they become available.

The fourth candidate is next Monday, March 3rd; and, the fifth candidate is slated for Thursday, March 6th. We don't yet have much details on those two individuals.

The following message is from Dr. Brito:

"Over the next two weeks, the Department of Psychology will be interviewing five faculty job candidates (three for the new neuro-cognitive position, two for a replacement clinical psychology position). Each will be giving presentations (i.e., job talks). They are open to students. Unfortunately, the full schedules have not yet been published, nor rooms for the presentations. But, if you contact Ann in the Dept Office, she will have the latest information. I know that we are All very busy; but, if you are serious about psychology and about learning, you should find time to attend one or two of the presentations.

The first one is on Monday, 2/24, from 1:00 - 2:00 PM (no room # yet). The candidate is Patrick Quinn, who is in the process of finishing his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Quinn's presentation is titled "Consequences of Alcohol Use among Young People: Evidence from Non-Experimental Methods."

The second one is on Tuesday, 2/25, from 3:00 - 4:00 PM, in room #2120. The candidate is Ms. Anne Walk, who is applying for the neuro-cognitive position. Ms. Walk is in the process of finishing her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, with a concentration in Cognitive Neuroscience, from Saint Louis University. Ms. Walk has been teaching in the department this academic year as an annually contracted faculty member. She graduated in 2009 from EIU's Clinical Psychology program. I do not have a title for Ms. Walk's presentation; but, her dissertation is titled: The Effects of Auditory and Language Experience on Tasks of Sequential and Spatial Learning.

Information about the other three candidates will be posted as it becomes available."
