Here is the entry about Benedict Swingate CALVERT:
http://www.wargs.com/royal/kendal.html

Here is the quote from above website:
A number of places claim that, before she married Lord Chesterfield, the Countess of Walsingham was the mother of Benedict Swingate, later Calvert (1724-1788), the illegitimate son of Charles Calvert, 5th Baron Baltimore (1699-1751). If this is true, then the Countess would have a number of prominent American descendants, as Benedict Swingate Calvert's daughter married George Washington's stepson, and their granddaughter was the wife of Robert E. Lee.

It's not true -- the identity of Benedict Swingate Calvert's mother is not known -- but it may be of some value to show why so many people believe that his mother was the Countess of Walsingham.

A man who used the name "George Sydney Horace Lee Washington" was a mid-20th century researcher and writer, born in 1910 and died before 1989. Some of his published material is good, especially his work on the Stricklands of Sizergh and his work unravelling the early history of the Nevilles. But he had some sort of fixation on two subjects. One was the Bonapartes, and the other (his major fixation) was on the Stuarts. Every few years something would snap, and he'd publish a monograph which would contain the most astonishing pseudo-historical gibberish.

Fans of his agree that his masterpiece was Prince Charlie and the Bonapartes [Cambridge: W. Heffer, 1960]. In this, he claims that the oldest son of King Charles II of England, the Jesuit son, is the original of "The man in the iron mask". His grandson was Carlo Maria Buonaparte ("bueno parte" = "good background"), which means that Napoleon was the heir of the Stuarts. Not only that, but Napoleon III had a number of sons other than the Prince Imperial. The oldest of these sons went by the nom de plume of "Washington", and was the father of none other than George Sydney Horace Lee Washington. Which means that the author was not only the heir of the Bonapartes, he's the heir of the Stuarts as well.

The New England Historical and Genealogical Register published, in its July 1950 issue, an article by this George Sydney Horace Lee Washington titled "The Royal Stuarts in America" (pp. 173-176). In this article, on page 175, in the text of note 4, Washington states, directly but in somewhat convoluted language, that the mother of Benedict Swingate Calvert was Melusina von der Schulenberg, the Countess of Walsingham, the illegitimate daughter of King George I by his long time mistress the Duchess of Kendal. In the same note, Washington also states Benedict Swingate Calvert's father-in-law, Gov. Charles Calvert of Maryland (whose parentage is in fact unknown), was a son of Pierce Butler, 3rd Viscount Galmoye, by Henrietta FitzJames, daughter of King James II of England by Arabella Churchill. The article was later reprinted (and given much wider circulation) in a collection of articles extracted from the Register titled English Origins of New England Families. The article appears in Volume III of the Second Series [Baltimore: Genealogical, 1985], pp. 409-414, and note 4 appears on page 413 of the reprint. Later, Gary Boyd Roberts, in The Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants [Baltimore: Genealogical, 1993], presents, on page 9, the (valid) descent of Benedict Swingate Calvert from King Charles II, and adds "According to G.S.H.L. Washington (NEHGR 104[1950]:175, reprined in EO 2:3:413) the mother of Benedict Swingate Calvert was Melusina de Schulenburg, Countess of Walsingham and wife of Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, the man of letters, illegitimate daughter of George I, King of Great Britain, d. 1727, and Ermengard Melusina de Schulenburg, Duchess of Kendal", and presents, on page 13, the ancestry (given above) for Gov. Charles Calvert.

Mr. Roberts and the folks who collected the Register articles for reprinting were apparently unaware that Washington published a later article, "Two scions of the Royal Stuarts in Colonial America", in Notes and Queries, vol. 198, no. 2 [December 1953], pp. 527-529, in which he withdraws those identifications and comes up with a completely different mother for Benedict Swingate Calvert and a completely different paternity for Gov. Charles Calvert. Not only that, but in yet another later article, "Family knowledge in genealogy", in Notes and Queries, vol. 210, no. 2 [February 1965], pp. 43-47, Washington withdraws both of those previous sets of identifications and comes up with yet another completely different mother for Benedict Swingate Calvert and yet another completely different paternity for Gov. Charles Calvert.

Those who want to further explore Mr. Washington's fecund imagination, and learn who else he said was the mother of Benedict Swingate Calvert and the parents of Gov. Charles Calvert, can find that information in the cited articles. They won't be included here, as they're as fictitious as his claims mentioned above.

Gary Boyd Roberts later released The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants [Baltimore: Genealogical, 2004, and the 2008 reissue], in which the discussion of the ancestry of Benedict Swingate Calvert (on page 13) doesn't mention G.H.S.L. Washington or his work, and the ancestry of Gen. Charles Calvert isn't given at all. The only place where Roberts refers to Washington's imposture is in the introduction, on page lii, where Roberts says, of G.S.H.L. Washington, "Calvert speculations discarded".

Those who show the Countess of Walsingham as the mother of Benedict Swingate Calvert are relying a little too much on usually trustworthy sources (the New England Historical and Genealogical Register and Gary Boyd Roberts) which in this case were hoodwinked by a persuasive fabulist.

Thank you for providing this wonderful free resource! I have been researching my family tree and I have found a person who I cannot rightfully identify but perhaps some of her relatives are included on your pages. Her name was Jane Blewett, perhaps born in Devon in 1502. She is said to have been married to my 12th great grandfather, Nicholas Asbury, born in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1513. They had a son, Richardus Asbury. Some websites identify Jane Blewett as the daughter of Mary Bluet. Some say she was married to Nicholas Ayshford, born 1498. I'm just wondering who was Jane? I can't find her documented anywhere. I can't find Nicholas Asbury documented anywhere. I have a website: http://www.asburyfamily.today If anyone can offer me any information about my family, your kindness would be greatly appreciated. I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA but I was born in Charleston, West Virginia. My paternal grandparents were Andrew Watson Asbury and Pearl Mae (Asbury) Asbury. They were close cousins. I have been able to trace my family back to Nicholas Asbury but now I seem to be at an impasse.
