Hello, Bill. Please call me Tim. I'm sorry to hear you weren't admitted. Re. quotas, I see mention of "8% international quota" at this official blog post: "More Information on the Waitlist."

As for constraints on the admitted class, I can only reinforce what I tell applicants when I interview them: Admission is extremely competitive, but being qualified doesn't guarantee you will be admitted. Kim Hunter says it best: "[I]t's not that we didn't want you, it's not that you did something wrong...we just couldn't admit everyone we wanted. It really is that simple...it's not fair, but it is what it is. [emphasis in original]"

I live in Colorado and am not involved at all with international admissions. I'm sorry I can't help in that regard.

hello Mr. chambers
thanks for starting this forum
i just wanna know whether the various quotas exist at MIT as mentioned by many visitors on matt mcgann's blog.

i was an international applicant and am thinking of giving it another shot as i intend to take a gap year(P.S- this gap year has nothing to do with decisions... i just wanna finish my research and do some volunteer work with a very awesome NGO in my country).
please elaborate on the type of quotas and constraints at MIT.
also i am not leveling any allegations at anyone/MIT and i thank you for opening this forum

I'd like to seed this discussion by saying that if enough parents of admitted students respond, I'll open a new discussion for us. But I was motivated to open this discussion because I am disappointed by the off-topic conversations. Students who weren't admitted and parents of students who weren't admitted are all understandably disappointed. I'm happy to discuss matters further here, but I won't engage in off-topic conversation on Matt's MIT blog.

On March 15, 2011 Matt McGann, MIT '00, posted "News for Admitted Students." This QuickTopic is to "take offline" discussion inspired by Matt's blog post but that is not "on topic." If you were not admitted, or if you are a parent of an applicant (admitted or not), I encourage you to continue the discussion here.

I am a parent of a class of 2015 admit. Full disclosure: I am also MIT Class of 1984, and I am an Educational Counsellor in the Southern Colorado area. I am not employed by MIT. I am a volunteer. I am your host here.
