Subject: QuickTopic now uses HTTPS.

Hi QuickTopic newsletter subscribers! We just wanted to let you know that QuickTopic is now more secure, using the HTTPS protocol for all your connections. In most browsers and on your mobile devices, you should now see a lock icon in the URL address window at the top. This means that connections from your computer to QuickTopic and back are more secure.

If you have any problems, as always please contact us using the Contact link at the bottom of the page.

Subject: How to add QuickTopic to your phone's home screen

Happy New Year, QuickTopic newsletter subscribers! Knowing that most of you use QuickTopic from your phone sometimes, I thought I'd provide some easy tips for adding a QuickTopic widget to your phone's home screen so you can get to it with one touch. Here are the quick steps for iPhone/iPad and for Android devices:

iPhone/iPad
1. In your browser (Safari), go to your QuickTopic page.
2. Tap the Share icon at the bottom of your screen (the square with the arrow).
3. Tap Add to Home Screen.
4. Tap Add.
That's it!

Android phones and tablets:
1. In your Chrome browser, go to your QuickTopic page.
2. Tap the upper right menu (three vertical dots).
3. Tap Add to Homescreen.
You're done!

Hi QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

We added one more minor email-handling improvement: we no longer include the the text <replied-to message removed by QT> at the end of the posted message when you reply by email and include the previous message. We think this was often a source of confusion and it's cleaner-looking the new way. Let us know if you have any problems with this.

Hi QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

In answer to a great suggestion by one of our users, we've made our topic email messages (the ones you get when you click Get Email) more friendly for mobile apps, gmail, Outlook, and other email readers.

We've moved the heading to the bottom of the email message, so when you see a preview of the message, you'll see the actual message the person sent instead of the same old boilerplate heading.

Also, we've changed our email headers (the part you don't usually see) so that messages from a given topic will be grouped as a thread in your email app.

Enjoy!

I forgot to mention what happens next if you enable the new feature!

With the feature enabled, a New Topic link will appear at the bottom of your Shared Topics page, visible to everyone. If they click it when they’re signed in, they just fill out the topic name and the CAPTCHA spam prevention box, and submit the form. They’re taken to their new topic page where they can post the first message, and the link to the new topic appears at the top of your Shared Topics list.

We keep a pretty good eye on spam and we delete spam topics, so you shouldn’t need to worry about that, but you will of course want to check on activity from time to time.

Hi QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

I'm announcing a new feature, requested by many of you! Do you use the Shared Topics page to gather all your topics on a single share-able page? Now, you can allow anyone to add a topic to your Shared Topics page. This is a bit of a game-changer because it means you can have a larger-scale open community in which anyone can create a new topic . You do, however, have the ability to remove any topic from your Shared Topics list any time.

To use the new feature, first go to your Shared Topics page (it's linked from your My Topics page) and then click Edit Shared Topics. You'll see a checkbox that says "Allow anyone to create a topic". Check that, submit the form, and you're set.

And guess what? This feature is part of Free QuickTopic. Why? Well, mostly because I'm too lazy right now to restrict it to Pro users, and I want to see how much use it gets. Warning, though, I may make it a paid feature someday, available only with a Pro account.

Try it and let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Steve Yost

Hi QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

This one is for you Pro subscribers, current and future! I've just eliminated the need to click an activation link in the email that you receive when you subscribe and renew. One tiny improvement to your Pro experience.

Cheers,
Steve Yost

One more quick note:

While I was under the hood, I also increased the annual message limit from 50,000 to 100,000 for Pro users. Bandwidth and disk space are pretty inexpensive these days, and I want to make it *very* unlikely that you'll ever hit the limit. As always, if you do, you can purchase more messages, or maybe just ask me and I'll increase the limit again!

As always, I'm happy to get your feedback and suggestions. Just click the "Contact" link at the bottom of your message board and use the option to contact QuickTopic administrators.

Regards,
Steve

Hi QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

I've just implemented a new Pro feature requested by one of you. There's now a "Hide deleted-message indicators" feature under the Settings button on all topics. You can use it to hide those place-holder messages that say "Deleted by author" or "Spam deleted by QuickTopic", etc.

Its default value is Off (meaning that those place-holder messages will still be shown), but as a Pro feature you can use this feature to hide them. Note that message numbering is not affected by this feature because people can refer to messages by their message numbers, so with the feature active, there will be some gaps in message numbering.

For those of you in the U.S. and Canada, I hope you're enjoying a relaxing Labor/Labour Day weekend!

Regards,
Steve

Hi QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

As promised in my previous message, we now have a new feature! Your board's readers can now donate to your Pro subscription. If you're not already a Pro subscriber and you're NOT signed in as the board's owner, you'll see a "Gift QT Pro" button on the right hand side where the "Upgrade to Pro" button used to be. I'm assuming that most of you are board owners, so you'll need to sign out from your board in order to see it.

You current Pro subscribers won't see it at all, but you CAN include a link to it in your heading if you like (or simply post a message), as follows (we'll do something to make this easier in the future).

So here are some instructions FOR CURRENT PRO SUBSCRIBERS WHO WANT TO ALLOW GIFTS:

Here's an example link:
http://www.quicktopic.com/cgi-bin/gift.cgi...&topic=WPmtY4Lewf6j
(But please don't send me a gift of QT Pro, as much as I'd love it. I know a guy who can get me one for free.)

So, to create your own link for your board, substitute the number after "forum=" with the number just before the /H/ in YOUR board's URL, and substitute the random string after "topic=" with the part after the /H/ in your board's URL. Try your substitution, and you should see a page like the one linked above, only with your user name instead of "Steve Yost".

I know this is really complicated. Soon, I'll add a subtle Gift link in the footer of Pro boards, and it'll be much easier.

Just one caution: We'll be taking a week off the week before Christmas and I may not be able to process gifts immediately (it's not all automated yet), but rest assured they will accrue to your subscription.

If you have questions, feel free to post here: http://www.quicktopic.com/50/H/PhAveTvrPJB

Happy holidays!

Please give us your answer here:

Hello QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

We had a software issue that was causing an error when you tried to post an image to your message board. That's now fixed. The problem occurred from around 2pm ET-US on Friday through around 7pm ET-US yesterday, when our hosting provider was able to fix the problem.

We're sorry for any inconvenience that this caused you. We'll further investigate the cause and do our best to prevent it from occurring again. Thanks to those of you who first notified us of the problem.

Steve Yost

Hello QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

This is just to let you know that we recently had an issue where emails were not being sent to subscribers when new messages were posted to boards. This happened when our hosting provided performed an upgrade to our servers, but missed a configuration setting. Once one of you alerted us to the problem, we contacted them and they fixed it promptly early Tuesday morning Eastern Time US. Emails that should have been sent between Sunday night and that time were not sent. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

Steve

Hello QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

Just a quick update. We just reduced the size of the footer for QT Pro users. More and more people are embedding QuickTopic boards in their own web pages, and we think this new small footer looks better in those situations, and is less obtrusive overall for you Pro subscribers. Let me know what you think.

Steve

Hello QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

Great news! We just improved your experience when viewing QuickTopic from your mobile device. The topic page now fills the screen and is more compact. We also hid a few links from the top tool bar, to reduce clutter on a small screen.

The view from your computer is unchanged, except for one improvement: the width of the page now tracks your browser's width, with an inch or so of border on each side.

Let us know how it's working for you! Click the "contact" link at the bottom of any QuickTopic page to drop us a note.

Happy holidays!

Regards,
Steve

Hello QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

We have a new feature for you topic administrators: reporting spam. When deleting a message by clicking on the IP address below the poster's name, you can also report the message as spam if that's the case; just check the checkbox that you'll now see. We use your report to help prevent any more similar spam across the entire QuickTopic site.

So you can help improve our spam prevention by deleting and reporting spam messages as soon as you see them.

Regards,
Steve

Hello QuickTopic newsletter subscribers,

We've just released the new feature I mentioned in my last update:
Users of QuickTopic Pro boards can now upload much larger images than before -- up to 20 megabytes each. We'll create a small thumbnail version for display in the message. When readers click the thumbnail image, it displays the large version (which can be up to 1000x1000 pixels).

We've also increased the Pro image storage limit from 100 megabytes to 500 megabytes. For you existing Pro subscribers, we've also added 400 megabytes to your allotment to bring you up to the new limit.

More details:

The FAQ (http://www.quicktopic.com/faq.shtml) has been updated to describe the thumbnail images.

The new feature only applies to newly-posted images. Existing images on your boards will continue to be displayed the same as before.

If you use the Print link at the bottom of your board, the board will show images at a 400x400 pixels, so they'll print with a more visible size, but still fit on the printed page.

Enjoy!
Steve

We'd like your feedback on a new QuickTopic feature that's almost ready.

Users of QuickTopic Pro boards will be able to upload much larger images than before, and we'll create a small thumbnail version for viewing in the message. When readers click the small image, it will load and display the large version.

Give it a try and let us know your thoughts here:

QuickTopic Site Search is here!

Now readers arriving at QuickTopic's front page can search for public QuickTopic boards. There's a search box in the tool bar at the top of the page.

To try it, you may need to sign out, and then visit http://www.quicktopic.com. Look for the search box at the top of the page, type something, and hit your Enter key and see what turns up.

This feature is hot out of the kitchen, so if you have any suggestions, we're listening. Use the Contact link at the bottom of this web page. I think we'll want to have it available in other parts of the site eventually.

Also, for public boards, I think it would be great to have a public index page where you can add a link for your public topic. What do you think? Use the Contact link to let me know.

Regards,
Steve

We've added a new feature: If you want greater topic security, you can now set a password for your topic. Just click the Settings button at the top of your board and select Set Topic Password. Set your password, and then contact your readers to let them know.

This feature was previously only available with Quick Doc Review Pro.

Another new QuickTopic feature is coming soon: Site Search for public topics.

People often come to the front page of QuickTopic looking for a particular topic, but can't find it because we have no index of public topics yet. With the upcoming Site Search feature, there will be a Search button on QuickTopic's front page. It will use Google's custom search feature to search for PUBLIC topics on QuickTopic.

Is your topic public? If you've linked it to any public web page, it is. To check for yourself, go to Google and type "site:quicktopic.com" followed by the name of your topic. If your topic is public, it will show up in the results. If it's a private topic, it won't show up. Read more about topic privacy here: http://www.quicktopic.com/private.shtml.

Our new Search feature will simply make it easier for people to find your topic ONLY IF it's a public topic. If your topic is private, it won't be included in the results - it will remain private. As you know, we take your privacy seriously.

If you have a public topic and you'd still like for it to NOT be included in the Site Search results (even though people can find it on Google), or if you have any other questions or comments, please let us know using the Contact link at the bottom of this board's QuickTopic page.

We had reports yesterday that QuickTopic's email functions weren't working. We've just found the cause of the problem and it's now fixed, so your particpants who are subscribed to receive email when there's a new post should now receive them when a new message is posted.

Emails that should have been sent during the outage will not be sent, so you may want to post a message to let your participants know that there may be messages on your board they haven't seen.

The same problem also prevented you from being able to contact me using the Contact link at the bottom of your board, so that is now working as well.

My deep apologies for the interruption of service! We're doing everything we can to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Hello again, QuickTopic newsletter subscribers.
We're happy to announce new features!

1. You topic creators/admins can now delete messages directly from the main board view! You'll see a symbol in the column to the left of each message. Just click it to delete the message. Only you can see these symbols -- your readers won't see them.

2. If you're a Pro administrator*, you can also ban the message's IP at the same time you delete it.

3. Pro admins can now configure the number of messages displayed on each screen. This applies to ALL your boards. To configure this, click the Settings button in the toolbar and click Set Messages Per Page.

More to come! Enjoy.

Regards,
Steve Yost

*If you're not yet a Pro admin, check out all the Pro features:
