Good morning everyone. Is it a miracle that I was able to post my Saturday photo?
I will go to the new site, also.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Larry and I just stayed home this year so I had a lot of time to look at new message board options. There is just not anything I could find that is like this page. It will really be missed. I don't understand why on all the different ones I looked at that not one posted the most recent message at the top. I will continue to look into maybe having someone design a simple chat page like this one. But for now I have set up a minimal chat page on Facebook Groups. It is called Open Salt Chat https://www.facebook.com/groups/opensaltchat

Hope you ALL have a GREAT THANKSGIVING! I'm thankful for the opportunity to "visit" with you all this way. I hope things can be worked out, to continue doing so! I'm SURE that I have a turkey salt SOMEWHERE, but don't wish to go through 16 cabinets looking for him this morning(and don't have a SMART PHONE to simplify sending a photo anyway!!

I am a member of several closed groups on Facebook and I think they work well. It might work for us, but I think it is too much to monitor for one person, namely, Debi. But if one or more would volunteer to monitor, it could work.
I stay on Facebook in general because I still have H.S. Friends I hear from as well as distant relatives. I have never had trolls and I think that is because I never “like, dislike, or comment” on controversial subjects. I may read them, but keep my thoughts to myself.

Holy cow, I go away for a couple of days and the board blows up.
Nancy D., I love your Turkitten. I am sooooo glad one of the boys will be with you for Thanksgiving. Glad you are feeling better.
I start everyday with this site. Me and my coffee. I love the people and conversations. Debi, I think the F B idea is a good one. If it is manditory to have 2 administrator or modereators.... I volunteer. I read every bodies posts anyways and try to respond to everybody. Or I a willing to be your puppet. Use my name but I do nothing.
Joan, please do not go away. I am a very limited F B user. I have just a few friends and family. I do a couple of glass sites and a salt site. And that's it. They (F B ) don't bother me and I don't bother them. I have enjoyed you too much to lose you. I don't want to be pushy, you have your reasons but really, you can be in total command with no interference from F B. You'Re family and we love you too.
Even Don's, Deana is on F B so we wouldn't lose him either. It is a good idea if there is nothing else.
Challenges in life can be a real PIA.

I personally do not like Facebook. If that is the only way to continue I guess it will have to do. I've posted some materials on Open Salt Collectors of the World to see if I'd be able to handle dealing with the way it jumps around. I was not impressed and I noted that even some of the long time members of the group have problems posting, reading and/or finding information that has been up for a time. I'm an organization freak and prefer more logic to the way materials are grouped.

Joan, I do understand your concerns. I joined Facebook many years ago but weird stuff was happening so I deleted my account. When I signed back a couple years ago, I decided to do what Linda suggested. I do not not maintain a personal page and have never friended anyone. That allows people to post on your page and I never even look at mine. All I put in was the picture on my profile page but that's it. I wanted to join a few groups and that's all I do on Facebook. If you absolutely won't consider doing it that way, I do understand. I will keep looking for something suitable. I think there's a way to add one to the website without going though some other company but I don't know how to do it. If I can get some guidance I'll try that. But if it doesn't let people post pictures it's useless.

Inez, I know administrators can delete or shut off comments on a topic and allow who can join the group. I think I could also figure out how to add the banner. If that's all there is, then I think I can handle it until something, anything else could be used instead. For now, I don't think we have any other choice and there's only 4 days left to post here.

Ok, my two cents worth. Facebook would be better than nothing. I'm going to go into withdrawal without this page.
Joan, you can join Facebook and not add any information to your profile, and only join the groups you are interested in, and you don't have to "friend" anyone if you don't want to. Debi hasn't friended anyone (and I'm so hurt... lololo)
If something better comes along we can just not use the facebook group any longer, or delete it. It could be named anything, 'morning coffee', 'salt cellar addicts', 'salt (open salt or salt cellar??) research' "Nancy's kitties" well you get the picture.

As to what admins do on FB. Mostly read all the posts and respond and that is no different than what the members do. Because the ones I admin have ID questions I vet those, asking for more info, etc. So that is something members would do. So I suppose admins really are the security. They vet members and make sure there is civility. Admins and moderators are able to delete unsavory posts and posters, mute conversations, punish as necessary by making some folks not able to post without approval. Admins load the banners. They and the moderators maintain the photo and files section.

Also, Debi, I think the administrators accept or ignore requests to join. I’m glad we don’t have foul language here, nor political rants etc. If we did, then yes, you would be able to warn the person and could choose to delete inappropriate content.

It makes me so sad to think of losing contact with such a wonderful group of people. I wish I could help with a solution but have no clue as to where I would even start. I know nothing about Facebook but if that is the only viable alternative then that would rule me out from participating going forward. I don't belong to Facebook and would never consider joining. Debi, I would be more than happy to continue to help out with the H&J project via emails if you want, and if it doesn't make double work for you. Although I am hoping something will still turn up, if you should find that Facebook works best for the majority I will certainly understand. I will miss all of you and the friendships and special moments we have shared over the years. I love you all and will always keep you in my prayers.

Inez, I have a question about Facebook. I understand what you're saying about administrators but what does one do except delete an inappropriate post or kick someone out. We don't have those sort of problems. Anyone on the board would have to be approved to join the group. I don't really expect we'd have more of a crowd than we do now. Sigh! I am really going to miss Quick Topic.

Inez, the website is not in danger. If you are not able to access it right now, please let me know. When I had to switch it to a new server last week they did not set it up so you could just type in opensalts.us and if you had a link set to that it probably didn't work for a day or two at the most. That should be fixed now. I tried it and it works.

Susie, I set up another free message board today and tried it out myself with several posts. I think the MAIN problem is that new messages always post at the bottom. Some boards don't allow picture uploads. All of them will have ads unless you upgrade and pay a monthly fee. Another automatically deletes posts when it reaches 2000. There are so many options but I have not found anything at all like this board. I asked Steve twice about a replacement he could recommend but never got a response.

This is one of the forums I admin. You can see but not participate if you belong to FB. I have found overall to avoid trolls, etc, only use your forums and never ever use the newsfeed (the little house icon)and you should be just fine. That way you avoid all the politics, and the trolls, and the folks who want to hack you.

If you need help with a FB forum let me know, that I do know my way around. You would need at least 2 admins and 2 moderators, so you would be covered if FB decides on a whim to throw one in "jail" for some imagined slight.

I admin several FB forums. It is time consuming, you have to make it private if you want any control at all, and vet all new folks. I am more worried about the Catalogs etc. I don't want them to go away. If you need help financing that I might be able to help. I really know nothing about message boards. Chatabout has their forum that is a message board. I forget who is their host/network person. Tom Felt might guide you there.

I'm really sorry but I just can't find something simple to use, the ability to post pictures, and free or cheap. I don't know how we'll continue to work on more H&J pages unless it's done through email. Some of you have expressed in the past that you don't want a new Facebook Group and I really don't want that either. All the boards I have reviewed are complicated and this small group does not do complicated well, including me. They all have threads and new posts appear at the bottom. Would a Facebook page really be that bad? Pictures could be uploaded in multiples on a first post for future H&J Project work, and other people could add their pictures to that same post. I don't really know what it takes to be a Facebook moderator but with our small group what issues could there be? If it was private group requiring that you request to be a member, then that would keep out spammers and unknowns. What do you all think, Facebook or nothing?

Inez, I haven't yet found another suitable message board like this one. ProBoards is much too complicated with threads we don't need or want, and new messages are posted at the bottom instead of the top. If you have any leads please let me know. Quick Topic is just this message board. If you are having trouble getting into the website, it should be fixed now. I also had to switch web servers, but that has nothing to do with Quick Topic shutting down. I know we will miss it.

QuickTopic will shut down on December 11, 2021

Dear QuickTopic users:

I'm sorry to break the news to you that QuickTopic will be shutting down. We've already sent email notification to all QuickTopic Pro board creators, and to most free-level creators of recently updated message boards.

Here's the planned schedule, in reverse:

The final shutdown date will be December 11, 2021.

We'll disable the posting of new messages starting on November 27.

To save your message board contents, you can do the following: In the lower left corner of your message board, tap the Print link. That will take you to a page with some options.

It's been a wonderful experience building and running QuickTopic all this time. With 21 years since its inception, QuickTopic has been the world's longest continuously running web-based social media platform. Some of you have been with us for nearly that long. Special thanks to you long-term users, and especially to you who have supported us as QuickTopic Pro subscribers.

I have told them and asked them to fix it. You do not need to sign into the website. Don't try, it won't work. If you get a page like that you are not using the first link in bold letters above. Snowing in Michigan but not really sticking much.

Tomorrow I have to begin transferring my website to a different server. It's the same company just a different offshoot. Hope it works out well without much input by me because I have no clue about that stuff. Nothing will change but it might be down for a bit over the next couple days. This is some sort of more secure server. Good news is that there might be a message board I can host on my own website. Didn't want to mess around setting it up until everything is switched over successfully.

Susie, I looked at the EAPGS data base and found that those wheelbarrows were listed under West Virginia Glass Manufacturing Co. They were also shown in the Novelties category but not in Open Salts so I asked one of the data base people to add them in Open Salts. The Adams wheelbarrow salt was also in Novelties, but not Open Salts.

I only have a marked St. Clair basketweave and the cobalt AA Import wheelbarrows so was not of any help with the smooth sided one with the dotted diamond mark. I did discover while looking at the basketweave wheelbarrows that they are also listed under National Glass, made at the Indiana Tumbler & Goblet Co. factory from 1899 until 1903 when the factory burned down. Previously they made by Indiana Tumbler & Goblet (ITG) also known as Greentown Glass. There's no way of knowing which are actual ITG and which are National. But, what difference does it make? They were still made by the same factory just under the name of National Glass. Those glass conglomerates of United States Glass Co. and National Glass Co. can make things very confusing.

I posted this question to the Greentown glass Facebook Group, and per a posting by Roger Hayworth and a page on the EAPGS Database they are not Greentown but by West Virginia Glass Manufacturing Co, Martin’s Ferry, OH, introduced circa 1899. They had pictures showing the colors it came in, and mentioned the mold very similar to Greentown, probably from the same mold maker.

I remembered that there were a lot of figurals in the last Evans auction from the Ayers collection. The basketweave ones were identified as Greentown and the smooth ones say unverified maker. I couldn't see the area that would have the marks on either of them though.

When we did the last H&J Project page, Judy posted pictures of a clear glass wheelbarrow without engraving, but it had the same mark. She commented that she asked Greentown collectors and they said Greentown did not make the smooth ones just the basketweave wheelbarrows. So either the Greentown person did not know, or they are not Greentown. The cobalt one in H&J is the repro by AA Imports and I have one so I used those pictures. The scalloped top is flattened in H&J. http://opensalts.us/References/HJProject/hj873page.pdf

Does anyone have a basketweave Greentown with the diamond mark to compare pictures of the mark?

Hi everyone. Good news all around. Nancy V is moving around Nancy D is home and Mary is getting 3 cats. We have a trifecta of good things.
Well, I have one set of twins turning 15 tomorrow. I don't know where the time has gone. I should be happy but I feel sad. I guess I better find a SALT OF THE DAY and feel better. Got this beauty from Nancy D many years ago. Still love it.

   Hi everyone,
Nancy D, has it been since September???? My gosh.... my brain did not realize. Well, with luck you'll be home tomorrow. That will be wonderful.
Nancy V, wonderful to hear you are doing so well. Keep up the good healing and hard work.
Now we need to get Mary home. And the gang will be all better.

Nancy D, I've been limited mostly to looking at the line of trees outside my apartment windows, out only for a dental appointment earlier this week. It was my first time to drive my car in months, and I'm looking forward to more time "out" soon. I hope you can see some fall color soon.

Mary, what's going on with you?. Are you walking? You sound so good. Do you have a working date for going home?
Nancy D, sigh of relief. And love that Ken. He's a good son. Be sure to salt everything.
Nancy V, how are you doing? Haven't heard much from you lately.

Susie and Debi, yes it's an owl. and Evans' called it owl on stump. I didn't think to check my toothpick books, I'll go look. It's really grown on me. Now I just have to decide what I'm going to do with the duplicates in the lot, keep or pass them on.
And Debi I'm using the search feature, but for people not already in my tree. And the reason I'm searching is because I don't have the information they want.. Duhhhhh! I might be a member of the Ancestry FB page but I'll have to check,
Cleaned out my side of the closet today. It wore me out!
here's one of my duplicates

Linda, there is an Ancestry Users Facebook Group I joined about a month ago. Lots of good replies for questions. Are you talking about using the Search feature? I heard you can edit a search by clicking on the little pencil. I don't use it a lot, only if I don't have an exact date of birth/death for someone.

That looks like a toothpick holder to me, but if it isn't identified somewhere then who knows? I have a toothpick book but will have to go page by page. I did not find it on the EAPGS website. Is that a bird or an owl?

Debi I am also an Ancestry user and I used to be able to pop a name and place in and get results, Now it says that's not enough information. It still gives me pages of useless random names even when I get more specific. A friend and I went on a road trip last week and went to a historical society in a town where we both had research. The lady in charge went to Ancestry and Newspapers.com rather than her own files. I felt like telling her we'd already tried that but held back,we had a good laugh after we left, but I did get two marriages I needed in the end, and she found out where a great uncle was buried.
Mary are you home yet? in rehab? what's going on?? big hugs for you. Prayers never end
Tried the new page I can get to it ok now on the computer, but can't get it on my phone, will keep trying
This is one of the pieces I got from the last Ayers auction, and it is pictured in the compendium. Its the only one like it that I've seen....any one else have one?

Hi everyone, just thought I'd let you know I revamped the H&J Project page so there are only three salts across now instead of four. I mainly use Chrome for a browser and they no longer recognized the meticulous HTML coding I used for spacing and the salts looked very crammed together in some places and spaced far apart in others. I went with three across instead of four because I know most people use their phones these days instead of a computer or laptop with a nice large screen. So it should be more user friendly on a phone. I think the major companies are all on a "lower your expectations" campaign. I use Ancestry regularly and it went to hell recently with dumb changes that result in poor work product we can't control. Facebook is spotty in how it works, or doesn't. But USPS is the leader in this campaign. They raise the rates and then say they can't guarantee delivery in a specific time frame. Get used to it folks. Now the customer is always wrong, and they just don't care.

Good Mornin' Debi
I've been on ProBoards and played around a bit. As usual I fussed and cussed, but managed to do a few things. I see what you mean about not liking the new posts at the bottom of the listing. I do like being able to post more than one picture at a time. That will cut down on the number of posts on something like the H&J project.

My daughter is a gamer and the group she is in uses ProBoards to communicate while playing. She likes it, but she is in Information Technology for AAFES and after main frame systems problems a message board is simple to her. NOT TO ME.

I have a different black amethyst Anvil on the way ... I hope.

I am still looking for a suitable chat page. The one I have now will not work long term because I can't reverse the order of the posts. Once we would reach 30 posts, you'd have to go to the next page, and after 60 posts, you'd have to scroll down and go to page 3. Just not very practical for us. I wrote to Steve and asked if he had any idea of what a similar replacement would be. We just don't need all those different threads and everything I looked at so far is set up that way. I'll keep on looking, and hope Steve had a good idea when I hear back.
