Sad news. My husband, Don, passed this morning. Thank you all for the prayers, love and support you gave us. Chris has been with me since Friday, but we didn’t expect him to die as he was in a Rehab facility.

Judy: I just read Salty Comments on these Bird on Branch salts. Ed Berg said that although a dealer told him it was Sandwich, his research says Sandwich has no records of ever having made it. His drawings of the "old" and "new" branches definitely tell me the one I have is neither one of those. By the way, I bought a pair of these on eBay from Sweden and sold one to Ed Bowman. So whoever bought the pale blue Bird on Branch at Ed Bowman's salt auction has the other one from Sweden.

Judy: This is the one I mentioned when Linda first asked about the RUSTIC log salt. I know these log ends are different. I have one of a pair I bought from a seller in Sweden so I'm guessing it was the old one made in Sweden. Can't seem to locate any others although I could have sworn I had a cobalt Mosser one. Don't think I ever knew these were attributed to Sandwich too. The one I have has a slight blue tint to the glass. It's not clear glass. The rear log has a very pointed and sharp tip. Also has small tight wood grain on all three branch ends. Mine is not like your clear one. My bird does not have the same tail. It looks more like your amber bird tail, more plain. So there are probably at least three different ones, not just two.

Nancy V: I do remember that salt but I really have no idea if it was irradiated or not. I think the thickness of the glass might have something to do with the intensity of the color. Many of the irradiated ones done as an OSC project were heavy glass individuals and the colors, either purple or amber were pretty dark. If the bird nest salt was irradiated, maybe it was done for shorter time? I don't know it has anything to do with the color intensity or not. Just a guess. It is odd that it was a one-of-a-kind, but maybe it was an experimental piece. Anything's possible.

Debi, do you remember when I had an amber bird nest salt--found it in a flea market on the way to Tulsa from Fayetteville AR to catch a flight home. I sold it on eBay. I wasn't reading salt group chatter on the internet then and heard later that there was a discussion about that listed salt being a clear version color altered by irradiation. As I considered that, I didn't think so because it was a nice golden amber, not the darker result that I saw on irradiated glass bottles and salts.
The person who bought it wasn't a salt collector but collected amber glass so I hope she knew the difference.

Linda: Gillinder was doing frosted glass back then so I would guess other companies did as well. I have a clear and milk glass RUSTIC (log) salts. Milk glass definitely has the "stars" on the long ends. You have to think about what frosted glass really is. It eats away and roughens up the glass surface so it also eats away any fine detailing. Frosting is done after the glass is made. It doesn't come out of a mold frosted. My guess is that the frosted log is an original salt with the star detail eaten away. The wood grain detailing probably isn't as well defined as it is on the clear or milk glass either. But the frosting may have been done later. You could take any old salt and make it a frosted salt today. I would call that an altered salt, but I don't know if Campbell, Jones & Company originally made them frosted or not. And I'm so glad you took notes back when we were discussing all the salts made by Campbell, Jones that were thought to be made by other companies. We did that when Sid Lethbridge's book on Campbell, Jones came out. The bird nest salt is on the cover! (That's the one shown above with Morning Glories all over it.) But some people just keep repeating incorrect information.

The one I'm thinking might be a report is frosted and doesn't have the star like marks on the long ends. Do you know if they were making frosted glass in the1860-70s?

Linda: I'm not aware of any reproductions. Wouldn't they be made in colors if they were reproduced? There's no money to be made off clear repros and we would have seen colors by now. I've only ever seen clear and milk glass. Now the bird on the branch has been reproduced and I'm sure the branch ends are different between old and new on those.

Donna I use flood lights on tripods so I can move them in / out and up / down to try to get the best area lighted. And I use DAYLIGHT bulbs for hopefully the best color. At one time I had a spot in the front room that had good light at a certain time of day in front of the windows, but the trees make too much shade there now. I now have a folding table I set up with the movable lights and my camera on a tripod.

Thanks Judy, they just did not look right to me. Now I would not question yours because of the gray back drop. The white makes them look like they are just floating in air. Well me and my little dumb phone are doing good enough for eBay and the newsletter.... Just to dang stark, I really do like yours with a bit of color to the back, and pale color would make the pictures look real like yours, but the floating in space effect they have come up with is almost eerie .. Thanks again - me

Mary the seller may be using an overhead light. When I shoot table shoots I use a light on each side and slightly to the front of the salt. This washes the piece with light and helps eliminate unwanted shadows. They are also using a white ground...I usually use a pale dove gray. Still it looks like the shoots may have been run through Photo Shop and manipulated. I use a photo editing Nikon program to highlight, straighten, etc.

And the last example....

First off will ye of better picture taking please tell me how these pictures cannot be touched up beyond belief .... Even the best of pictures presented to the National Newsletter are no competition for these. I cannot believe there is no "brush work" to them.

Second of all, the seller has several more of the same salt posted and the pictures never change. So basically he is using the same picture for three or four different salts and each picture showing a perfect salt. How can this be, especially since they are all the older of the glass salts.

Hey Debi, you want his name and then you can just take his perfect beyond belief pictures for your H&J project. If I am wrong about these being touched up, then please tell me his secret....

Morning rant over and thank you for "listening" .....

Thank you all for the prayers and good thoughts. Unfortunately, they are still needed. Chris is here with me since Thursday. Don came home in a wheelchair ambulance that evening and was doing well, ate a good dinner, watched a ball game with us. He was walking on his own with a cane. Friday morning, he woke us in a bed full of blood and he has been in the hospital ever since. They keep flushing his kidneys and bladder, but there is no diagnosis. Chris extended his flight until Tuesday and Ken will try to come next weekend. I’m all right alone with neighbors looking out for me and a helper who will come Wednesday and shop and clean. Keep on praying.

This is the one I have been waiting for - It is a peacock with the most beautiful cart. I am not sure how much cleaning can be done - He is very delicate, his tail and body are almost like a thin metal thread lace. I copied my picture and put the new one on its side - watch it will now be upside down

The yellow is a Crider. I have been collecting quite a few of his pieces and not many of them salts. But I came to appreciate his work again when I saw some of his other pieces. Will show a grouping at some point.

More than likely part of a dresser set in its prior life. Thank goodness you found it so it could become what it has always wanted to be - a butterfly SALT just for thee. And there are some master salts that hit the 3" mark and then some. Sorry I have no info on its maker or age. I am thinking we should try and find books on dresser sets, am thinking we as a group may have released many pieces being confined to that category rather than ours --

Unfortunately I missed Jane's call last night but the VM seemed a bit more positive and she is finding some valuable pieces of clothing. She has not mentioned Kaylen so I will assume the little lady is beginning to settle down -

Thanks for asking, Mary. We are just moving across town and will be a lot closer to Tiffany and some other friends. Dwaine is feeling bad that he can't help, but when it is all over he will be so much happier and it will be so much easier for him to move around. The chair lift is nice but it is also a nuisance and sometimes doesn't work properly.

Perhaps, but only perhaps, my last post for the evening. One of my new salts. I love the, I love everything about it and especially that it carries a crest. Some day within the next twenty years I do hope to start doing a bit of my own research on my salts. Maybe I should commit to Kent to do a small running article on silvers, especially figurals. That might get er done, and then again....
Okay since you all are contemplating your pillows and comfy beds or am I a bit early for that and you are dining or desserting. Whatever I leave the board alone and I might boost, in non-abused condition. Things can of course change in a moments notice where I am concerned. You do remember that don't you....... Ta Ta

Talked to Jane yesterday - She has had the move from hell - The scheduled mover never showed so early evening she had to find someone else - which she was able to do - BUT - after they finished the job they were on - They did not get everything moved until one in the morning - She cannot find anything - I forget who gifted them the final cleaning needed for the old apartment - but he was a real charmer - complained about them not having moved their furniture and vacuuming under them - Yeah like everyone in their seventies and eighties with bad backs and need to use a cane - pick up their couches and move them on a weekly basis - Heck I would be afraid to see what is under some of my furniture even with me having April and Robin to help - Hope to hear from her today and that she has found the missing items from yesterday and that they are all three doing a bit better - Poor Kaylen became part of the missing and they were so afraid she had made it out the door - Apparently Kaylen can sleep through about anything including the calling of her name - She finally ventured out of Jane's closet like nothing happened and no one had called her -- I will let you know how the day went if I hear from her -

We still live in a Cape Cod style house with two bedrooms and a bath upstairs. Those were the bedrooms for the boys and when they come home, they can sleep there. It is mostly a storage upstairs and I haven’t been able to go up for years. The basement is a problem because the washing machine is there. Don has done the wash, but no longer can do it. Fortunately, we have a lovely lady that comes once a week to shop for groceries and do the wash as well as light cleaning. Praying for those on the move. The boys want us to go to a facility, but we are not ready yet.

Mary: I never did ask Jane, but wondered if they were moving to a ground level apt because of stairs? I am so happy we bought a ranch style house 30 years ago. Wasn't really thinking about stairs as we got older but it worked out well. We do have a full basement but I haven't been down there in over a year. Just storage...Larry goes down after heavy rains to make sure sump pump is working properly. I am so so glad we don't have a two story like all of our older neighbors. They are having to move because they can't do the stairs any more.

Oh and Jane sure could use some prayers right now - The move was yesterday and they got up at dark-thirty to go get the truck - She called me about ten her time to say the mover was not there yet -I missed her call that said it was two and he still had not shown up - I tried to call maybe three-ish my time and the phone just beeped which meant shoe had finally disconnected her phone - Poor Kaylen was locked in the bathroom the entire time - I can only assume she got moved but I know the prior stress and constant physical acticity was taking its toll so am sure this did not help either - So some prayers for a bit of peace and calmness I am sure would be appreciated for all three -- Will let you know if I can reach her today - She will not have her computer or phone until Comcast appears - but I have her seldom used cell number -- This has not been easy for her and she still has the unpacking and setting up of their new place -- Would not want to go through what she has been doing for the last couple of months - Hats off to her and Phil and even poor confused Kaylen --

Well Joel, the way I see it is another offer of use absolutely needs to be expressed -- With it being so narrow - I am thinking it is part of a dresser set - At first I was thinking along the lines of Lynda with it being for sugar packets - but they are normally placed single file when in a rectangular holder such as yours - But your piece is too narrow for that - I have to go with the dresser set thought - It shore is Purdy!!

Joel, I don't believe that is a salt. It could be for packets of sugars. Maybe strips of stamps, part of a desk set. I honestly don't know what it is.
Course it really doesn't matter, if you like it and want it to fit in your salt collection...... it is. . To my knowledge there aren't any purists out there that have ONLY true salts in their collections. Mine has eye cups, nut cups, don't know cups.

I picked this item up during a recent trip to Stillwater, Minnesota. While it was labeled as a salt, I have to admit that I have never seen one in this shape before. It's small, 1 inch wide by 3 inches long and stands 1 1/2 inches high, and quite heavy for its size. The feet and banding around it might be silver, but lack any tarnish. Could be a toothpick, but very difficult to get them out given the narrow opening. Haven't been able to get my camera to cooperate, resulting in pics that aren't very focused. Any thoughts - clues?

Hi Lynda - Your salt is not 24/25 it is closer in the family of 242 - 245 I have had it and I was sure it was in the OSC but cannot find it with a quick look --
Look at the straight sides on your piece and the indented sides on 24 - Also check your stem to the stem of the Steuben pieces - It is not a common "add on" but I truly do not think it is a Steuben - Too many differences -- Nice piece though!!!!!

   Jane,
I made the mistake of deleting ALL my pictures. Not on purpose, ment to just delete one, took out like 500. It still burns my butt. I am still playing catch up.
I don't envy you moving. I still have PTSD from moving 2 1/2 years ago. Nightmare from hell. To old for that crap. I wish you all the luck in the world.

I need some help. This salt, a Berg salt, looks like OSC #24, 25. The side piece is actually a face. There is no mark on the base. What is this #3148 on the write up?
