Very sorry to hear of both Bob Burchette and Frank Buxton's passings - both OTR stars in their own rights. RIP

Didn't Ray Erlenborn (sound effects man) attend several of the Cincy conventions? I seem to remember hearing he was there before my family started attending. Here's a note I found in the July 1942 issue of Radio Mirror magazine.

Sorry about my lousy typing. What I meant to say that Bob was a person you couldn't help but like. When you went to the Cincinnati Convention, Bob treated you as if you were a guest in his home.

Yet another OTR-related passing. Frank Buxton, co-author of THE BIG BROADCAST, one of the first books to look back at OTR, has died at age 87 or 88. Buxton also voiced the cartoon hero BATFINK, created and hosted various series including the well-remembered HOT DOG for kids in the '70s. He also did most of the non-Woody voices in WHAT'S UP, TIGER LILY? and guest starred on many sitcoms. Rest in Peace.

The new "The Top 100 Classic Radio Shows" book by Martin Grams is at Sam's Club for $19.78; ten dollars below retail. A great price, considering it's all slick-page full color, and it has three CDs too!

From tomorrow's Indianapolis Star (December 24):

Meredith LeWayne Granger

Indianapolis - 59, of Indianapolis, passed away December 17, 2017. He was born December 18, 1957 in West Union, IA, to the late Wayne and L. Darlene (Wolfe) Granger. Meredith was a graduate of North High School, West Union, IA, and he received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Meredith married Toni J. Morris in 1994 and was a radio producer and announcer for the Fine Arts Society from 1991 until 2015. He was a member of All Souls Unitarian Church, American Mensa and The Illustrious Clients. Meredith enjoyed singing in his church choir; he was a professional caroler during the holiday season.

The Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 1, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at All Souls Unitarian Church, 5805 E. 56th St., with visitation to follow.

Meredith is survived by his wife, Toni J. Morris; step-daughter, Margaret Parson (Chad); sister, Janelyn Papstein (Virgil); nieces, Stephanie Griffin (Noah) and Jacqueline Papstein; and great-nephew, Bain Parker. Meredith had many other interests besides OTR. He was an expert on Sherlock Holmes - his email address was "otr221b", 221B Baker Street being Sherlock's address. He was an avid tenpins bowling enthusiast, and a popular stage actor in Indianapolis. And for many years he was a radio host at the classical music station in Indy.

Joel and Carolyn Senter posted this nice tribute to Meredith. Rene and I were both so upset when we first heard about it that we had to get out of the house for a while. When we got in the car, we turned on the radio and the song already playing was "Only the Good Die Young." Did Meredith, a longtime radio program director, send us a message? In case there was any doubt, after we'd gone shopping and stopped to pick up dinner, we got back in the car and hit the radio again. A totally different song was playing but for some reason, the song identifying app in the car briefly flashed up, "Only the Good Die Young" again! Rest in Peace, you silly man.

I first met Meredith when he introduced himself by saying "I think we have a connection" in Cincinnati. My ears perked and then he said that his first name was for Meredith Willson, the subject of a biography I had written. He was so named because he was born when The Music Man came out. He would convince me to become a Ralston Strait Shooter in fierce OTR competition, and the rest is history. What a fun guy whose friendship will never be forgotten.

I’m sad to hear about Meredith. A few years ago in Cincinnati, he asked if he could pose in a particular way for my camera. I said yes and this photo is the result.

I too am terribly saddened by this. I met Meredith years ago at Cincy and he knew at that time I was collecting scripts and would often give me his when he appeared in one of the recreations. He was new to the hobby and we became friends because of our shared location - Indianapolis. Meredith formed a foursome for the trivia contest - the Tom Mix Ralston Straightshooters and we participated over a number of years winning several times. He will be missed.

That stupid Cincinnati OTR Convention made me care way too much about way too many people.

Just learned that Meredith Granger died suddenly of a suspected heart attack.

Meredith has been attending and acting in our conventions for the past 20 years. We will miss him dearly.

CONVENTION INFO 2018!

The date for the next convention has been set: Saturday, June 16.

It will run just that one day, in an abbreviated form. No hotel; shows will be presented at the Arts Council Theater in downtown Kalamazoo.

No auditions for parts. Three re-creations, mostly cast members from the Kalamazoo group.

Guests will be Jon Provost and Kathy Garver.

This year's show is being designed to bring in more locals. If it is successful, the full convention may return in 2019.

I don't know if there will be dealers or special presentations. Somebody from Kalamazoo please post more info for us!

Indiana has over the years not been as well-represented as bordering states Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan at the Cincinnati/Great Lakes Old-Time Radio/Nostalgia Conventions/Expos. While I can't promise the level of enjoyment that many of us derive from those events, Indiana does offer"Listening to Orson Welles on the Air,"
https://allevents.in/bloomington/listening...ir/2001672393385358
which promises to be a guided tour through Welles' radio innovations. There are two presentation times on Th 26 October with a reception between the two:
https://orsonwelles.indiana.edu
If you let me know you will attend, also alert me which time you'll be there, and I'll do likewise.
Even if you can't attend, eyeballing these sites may point you to some interesting, valuable information, resources, and opportunities.
Thanks.

NEW SHORTCUT TO GREAT LAKES NOSTALGIA CONVENTION BULLETIN BOARD

The old shortcut (http://glnostalgia.club) is expiring soon, and rather than renew it for nine bucks (I'm cheap), I bought a new domain for us for 88 cents!

It's http://greatlakes.site and it will take you right to the Great Lakes Nostalgia Convention bulletin board. Pretty easy to remember! Click it and say hello!

RADIO MIRROR MAGAZINE, December 1949.

Ivan was a bit younger then! (Click on it to see it bigger.)

(I sent this to Ivan, and he said,
"Thanks.
Nice to know how I'll look if 1949 ever comes back again.")

I have the same alert which is why I know of the charges while they are still in pending status.
I didn't have a chance to call due to commitments today but I sent an email. If I don't get a response, I will call.

Marilyn, any explanation from the hotel on how that happened?

My credit card is set up so that anytime a charge of $50 or more appears on my card, I get an instant email telling me of the charge. So I don't have to constantly check my statements - they tell me automatically when a substantial charge has been made. Pretty nice.
