Just got a note from Martin Grams that he won't be coming to the convention.

The date for the next convention has been set: Saturday, June 16.

It will run just that one day, in an abbreviated form. No hotel; shows will be presented at the Arts Council Theater in downtown Kalamazoo.

No auditions for parts. Three re-creations, mostly cast members from the Kalamazoo group.

Guests will be Jon Provost and Kathy Garver.

This year's show is being designed to bring in more locals. If it is successful, the full convention may return in 2019.

I don't know if there will be dealers or special presentations. Somebody from Kalamazoo please post more info for us!

Indiana has over the years not been as well-represented as bordering states Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan at the Cincinnati/Great Lakes Old-Time Radio/Nostalgia Conventions/Expos. While I can't promise the level of enjoyment that many of us derive from those events, Indiana does offer"Listening to Orson Welles on the Air,"
which promises to be a guided tour through Welles' radio innovations. There are two presentation times on Th 26 October with a reception between the two:
If you let me know you will attend, also alert me which time you'll be there, and I'll do likewise.
Even if you can't attend, eyeballing these sites may point you to some interesting, valuable information, resources, and opportunities.

For those who might have missed it, June Foray passed away two days ago, less than two months shy of her 100th birthday. Hokey smoke -- and thanks for everything, June.

The old shortcut (http://glnostalgia.club) is expiring soon, and rather than renew it for nine bucks (I'm cheap), I bought a new domain for us for 88 cents!

It's http://greatlakes.site and it will take you right to the Great Lakes Nostalgia Convention bulletin board. Pretty easy to remember! Click it and say hello!

Ivan was a bit younger then! (Click on it to see it bigger.)

(I sent this to Ivan, and he said,
Nice to know how I'll look if 1949 ever comes back again.")

I have the same alert which is why I know of the charges while they are still in pending status.
I didn't have a chance to call due to commitments today but I sent an email. If I don't get a response, I will call.

Marilyn, any explanation from the hotel on how that happened?

My credit card is set up so that anytime a charge of $50 or more appears on my card, I get an instant email telling me of the charge. So I don't have to constantly check my statements - they tell me automatically when a substantial charge has been made. Pretty nice.

Be sure to check your credit card statements. The hotel had now charged me twice for rooms after I already checked out.

Totally enjoyed my time at the convention! This venue has a much better vibe than last year's - it just felt "home-ier": several nice spots to sit and gab, friendly staff...it sort of felt like the hotel was "ours" for the weekend!

I was pleased to visit a few panels, usually I miss them for whatever reason. Very informative and fun!

I did get to have the included breakfast and dinner, very nice (and again, "homey"! can't go wrong with burgers and brats and dogs, and were those HOMEMADE potato chips? I think so!)

For whatever reason, that family feel was back strongly this year...even with some people that I hadn't barely got to know before. Made some good new friends and further cemented old ones, missed some usual convention-goers too (here's hoping they read this, and resolve NOT TO MISS next year's convention! Show up, we all missed you!).

Now it's time for me to continue staying in touch - gotta handful of convention people I have to email to touch base with...just getting back into the swing of things now, after a long weekend of FUN.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen yet another year!

P.S. Yes, I WILL do OTRaoke (Old Time Radio karaoke) next year! Let me know if there are any requests for shows.

Paul, Bob - the "free lunch" was the "Special Event For Preregistered Guests" listed on the program for Saturday night from 5:00 to 6:30. It was a huge buffet with hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, salads, pasta salad, lots of different kinds of pie...it was really a nice spread.

Free Lunch??
I missed that also.
I got the free breakfast and the free dinner....But no lunch.
Two out of Three, ain't bad.
Well, I had a great time and I'm very much looking forward to next year.
Don, thanks for taking the time to listen to some of my comments.
I appreciate it.

A great effort by all to say the least! I was one of the Dealers. I was however, disappointed I didn't find out about the free lunch until after it was over (I actually went to McDonalds during that time!). As was the case with past Cincinnati conventions, "Lunch" in the schedule meant we'd go to a nearby steakhouse on our own, and many years there were up to a dozen of us that would "take over" the restaurant. At the Newark conventions, the hotel provided the meals (which we paid for). Oh well....better luck next year!

Dan, thanks so much! It was great to have you, Kathy and Karen here in "the Zoo". We're already scheming about next year. I'm sorry I forgot a special thank you as we closed on Saturday night. My wife, Sue Bensinger, worked countless hours with us these past few months, and "personed" the GLNC vendor table most of the weekend. If anyone wants to add their thanks, her email is "mrhelms@charter.net". By the way, here are a couple of shots of Dan - in action - this weekend.

Just home from the Great Lakes Nostalgia Convention, and let me tell you it was a real hoot! We had a ball!

The hotel was perfect, the guests (Beverly Washburn and Ivan Cury) were great, the recreations were tons of fun, the extra programs were spot on, and the late-night gabfests were just like we used to do in our college days!

And on top of all that, the convention provided us a huge breakfast and a supper buffet - for free!

I loved hosting the Nostalgia Quiz Bowl. This year, the questions ranged from Old-Time Radio to First Lines of Famous Books to Fill in the Lyrics to Songs of the 1950s:
Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee
______ ______ in the land of the free...

Everybody involved was so friendly! This was definitely the high point of the year for me and my family.

Thanks for a great time, GLNC people!

Hope all of you who come to the Convention will play in the Trivia Bowl! Here are the rules:

Friday, May 5, 2017 – appx. 9:00 pm
(after the last re-creation show)

1. Teams consist of up to four members, with a 10-team limit. No cost to enter.
2. Prizes will be donated by OTR dealers.
3. People who would like to play but don’t have a team will be formed into teams at the contest.
4. Questions will be asked in sets of 10. There will be seven rounds, with a tiebreaker round at the end if necessary.
5. Any team member may write the agreed-upon answer on the answer sheet, as long as it is legible. PRINT! If the judges can't read the answer, the answer will be considered incorrect. (NOTE: Conferring should be done quietly, so that no other team can overhear you).
6. Answer sheets will be collected after each set of 10 questions, and judges (Martin Grams and Terry Salomonson) will compile scores as we go. Answers will be given after each set of 10 questions.
7. Every correct answer is worth one point.
8. Leaders will be announced periodically, so the audience can follow the progress of the contest.
9. Decision of the judges is final.
