For those of you who remember Peg Lynch coming to our Cincy convention, here's a clip from the gossip column of Radio Mirror magazine, April 1946.

I'm very disappointed.
I have enjoyed this event for the last 9 years, both in Cinncy and in Kalamazoo and will miss it.
I'll throw this out to the group.
I would be willing to designate some funds for a meeting, convention, get together, whatever we would choose to call it. I would not be able to cover the entire cost, of course, but if a group of us are willing to throw in a few dollars, perhaps we could make something happen.
We could choose a central location that would be convenient to all interested parties.
If any of you would like to pursue this idea, you are welcome to contact me.

From the GLNC Facebook page:

"Dear Friends of the Great Lakes Nostalgia Convention. We are sorry to write that we have decided, due to funding issues, to cancel next year’s Great Lakes Nostalgia Convention. We made ourselves a firm deadline to attempt to raise the necessary funds, but were unable to make it happen for 2019. We are hoping to assess the possibility of a convention in 2020.

We really appreciate those who attended our past conventions, our special guests, the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo and the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation for all of the support you provided over the past years. We hope someone else may be able to pick up and hold a convention yet next year. Many of us here in Kalamazoo would love to attend such an event. “Until me meet again.”

Karen, I already let it go. I paid a dollar for the name for a year; to renew would have been $15. And the board has seen so little use, I didn't think it worth it. The board won't go away; just the shortcut using the radiofun.info name.

Most of the posts we're getting lately are spam, and now that the convention is over, I doubt we'll see many more OTR notes. If we do, I can always get another shortcut name for under a dollar. Meanwhile, this board's real address is always https://www.quicktopic.com/41/H/yL4hDeiALxM/.

And for another month, the shortcut http://greatlakes.site still works.

Dan, It looks like the domain name http://radiofun.info expires/goes dormant soon. You wouldn't want to lose it.

A very nice job with that review.
I drove in from Rockford, IL and while I went into this rather sad that is was only a 1 day event, I actually had a very good time. It was great to see some familiar faces from the past few years and "All Ears" did a very good job hosting and keeping us entertained.
Kathy Garver, as usual is a gracious, funny, talented and friendly lady.
It was a pleasure to meet Jon Provost. I had an opportunity to spend some time with him and a very nice, down to earth guy.
W missed a lot of faces that have made this event a "Family Affair" over these past many years and I truly hope that this can be stepped back up to be more of a convention in the very near future.
Looking forward to seeing you all down the road.

I enjoyed the convention and I got the sense that everyone else who was there did, too. It started at Noon with Don Ramlow doing a presentation/demonstration about sound effects, including some that Barney Beck had used at WOR. People got to try them out, too. Don and I used hand-held mixers to demonstrate the sound of two bicycles going down the street.

The All Ears Theatre music coordinator did a presentation on how he composes music for audio productions at 2 and Mickey Sykes interviewed Kathy Garver and Jon Provost at 4.

There were re-creations at 1, 3, 5 and 6, with the Chicago Players and All Ears Theatre performing the various parts, along with Kathy Garver and Jon Provost.

There were also snacks available throughout the day and a buffet dinner at the end. That was unexpected.

There was no dealers' room, which is understandable considering it was a one-day show.

The good news is that everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The bad news is that there were almost no younger people there. Don told me that they've had successful demonstrations with the sound effects for kids at the local library, so there's interest in some aspects of audio theater. Those organizing the convention are going to make more of an effort to get the word out earlier next year.

Personally, I think the convention needs to be a two-day affair, but if it continues to be a one-day deal, it needs to draw in a lot of people from Kalamazoo and the surrounding communities. It also needs to draw in more than just OTR people, whether it's a one-day event or takes place over two-days. One way to do that might be to bring in (obviously affordable) guests who are known for cartoon voice work. If the convention can bring in actor/actress X, who voices popular character Y, that could attract kids. They come to see X, who they know for playing Y and stay to see X perform in something called a "radio play."

No official determination has been made about whether they'll be a convention next year, but one person I spoke to seemed confident there will be one. I think it's in the realm of possibility.

I can understand why people might not have want to come to a one-day show from several states away, but for those who live within a three or four hour drive of Kalamazoo, I think they'd have found it worth the trip.

Steve, unless they've changed it, this year's "convention" is not a convention, just an afternoon and evening of radio re-creations. One by the Chicago group and the rest by the Kalamazoo group. Kathy Garver and Jon Provost are scheduled; I'm assuming they will star in the re-creations.

Nothing on their web site about it yet; last year's convention info is still there:

Any of the Kalamazoo folks see this board? Help!

Not a convention this year, but they say if their program does well they may try another convention next year.

Fingers crossed!
A convention

A public presentation of a local recreation with nothing else offered is not a convention.

This Convention is not a convention it's like the The Emperor's New Clothes everybody knows it's not a convention but will not say it is not a Convention. Still I have to admit it is better than nothing.
