IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN....

Subzero temps and snow on the ground, so time to think about softball! Sign-ups have already started for the regular leagues.

As for us, mainly, I need to know who's coming back.

Please post here, or send me a private note (danhughesmail@gmail.com) and let me know your plans. ESPECIALLY if you're retiring or switching teams - if I need to recruit, I need as much advance notice as possible. Thanks!

Still don't know where we'll be playing, but I won't be surprised if they put us at Dexter again.

I'm instituting a new team rule this year: CASA players who are on other Monday night teams in other leagues that take precedence over us will hit on Mondays, but not play in the field unless we are short. (Everybody will still play in the field on Wednesdays.)

And don't forget this year's league changes - We won't be playing the uppercrust teams at all this year - no Hitmen or Splitmen, etc. Top division from last season plays only other top-division teams, and lower division just lower division. Bottom line: We should win more games this year.

Practices will start when the fields are dry and the temp hits the 50s, probably not until late March or early April.

PERSONAL NOTE: I just starred in a Park District commercial for softball! It will be internet-only, and I don't know when it will run, but when they get it up I'll send you a link. Storyline is that I'm suiting up, getting ready to play, and then my son (Matt!) breaks into my reverie and reminds me it's still winter.

YEAR-END REPORT

Just finished walking the treadmill at Planet Fitness for 35 minutes. For exactly the 250th time this year.

At 2.2 miles per session, I've walked about 550 miles. Which puts me just the other side of Minneapolis.

No wonder I'm so cold.

BATTING PRACTICE SUNDAY, 2PM ON DODDS 3 - GONNA BE H-O-T AGAIN!

Remember Robin Shively, who played with us a few years ago? Well, he's had rotator cuff surgery, and is ready to go again. He'll be at practice Sunday. It'll be good to see him again!

Chris Shields, the lefty who often hits it out of the park for Cler's Split Men, also runs a Wednesday night doubleheader team. Every week is a different theme night for them, and last night was Leisure Suit Night. Check it out! THESE GUYS ARE NUTS!

CHANGES IN SENIOR BALL FOR NEXT SEASON

1. Two divisions all season long.

Home/away matchups for the first half, then the bottom one or two teams in the top division will move down, and the top one or two teams in the bottom division will move up. (Depending on how many teams are in the league - Matt is expecting 12 senior teams next year.)

Then another set of home/away games in each division. Not sure if there will be a tournament or not; probably like we did this year, unless rainouts push us deep into fall. (With 12 teams, each team would play 20 games in the regular season.)

2. Mandatory flip in last inning if visitors are ahead by 7 runs or more.

3. 15 runs after 4 innings, 10 runs after 5 innings.

And Matt couldn't promise, but it looks good for us to be back at Dodds next year.

Finally, we may be looking at splitting the league into two divisions, 50-and-up and 60-and-up, somewhere down the line. Some managers wanted it immediately, but Matt wants to see what he gets with the new 35-and-up league next season.

Did you hear about the Red Sox-Blue Jays game last night? Boston won, 3-2, in 19 innings.

The game took exactly six hours. There were SIX different guys playing second base in the game, and the Red Sox leadoff batter went 2 for EIGHT.

For those of you who like to watch the A Division games, according to the schedule there are no games tomorrow night or next Monday (Labor Day). So the A Division will finish next Wednesday (September 6).

Wed, Sept 6:
6:15 - Cler's vs Pia's
7:00 - Body 'N Sole vs Fat City
8:00 - Old Time Meat & Deli vs Fasteners
9:00 - Fasteners vs Fat City

And I'm guessing the tournament will start the following Monday.

"The outlook wasn't brilliant for the CASA ten that day...."

If you recall, Frank hit a homer for us Monday night in the first playoff game.

I say it like this: Frank hit a homer.

But that's just the unpoetic version. Luckily for us all, Frank's homer has been memorialized in print for the 100,000 readers of the News-Gazette (counting the guys who pick it up at the barbershop while waiting their turn for a haircut).

And you can read the poetic version of Frank's homer on page D-2 of today's (Thursday's) newspaper...

Written by, well, by Frank.

Thanks for immortalizing that game for all of us, Frank, and for you non-News-Gazette readers, here it is online:

http://www.news-gazette.com/arts-entertain...-eclipses-film.html

Seriously, Frank, I fondly remember my last homer (several years ago). Wish I'd written a poem about it.

Don't really wanna write this one, but....

We were outplayed and out-umped. The ump's apology for calling Dave L - the first batter of the game - out on a flat pitch didn't help at all. That kind of set the tone for the game.

Our hitting was flat. We left 10 runners on base. In the 3rd inning, the bases were loaded with no outs, and we got just one run (our only run of the game) out of that. Overall, 1 run on 12 hits.

They hit well, but still we held them scoreless three times out of six. Our 3 outfielders-2 short outfielders formation helped on some plays, hurt on others. Mike M threw two more guys out at second, and the 65ers got 5 runs just once.

Even though five regular 65ers were out of state (at a tournament), they still had a great roster.

Hitting highlights for us: Eric and Dave H were 3 for 3, and Tom was 2 for 2. Frank was 2 for 3, with our only extra-base hit (he had a double).

And I gotta mention Dave L's great catch, where he was falling and sliding and still was able to hang onto the ball.

Okay, bottom line is we lost, 9-1, and thus ends our season. Our team on-base average dropped tonight, but still tops our goal of .500.

Have a great winter, everybody, and Tom, Au Revoir.

I'll continue the Sunday practices until people quit showing up. Please feel free to post notes here whenever you get the urge.

There will be a meeting with Matt and the other managers in a few weeks; I'll let you know what happens. Rumor is that the senior league will be stuck at Dexter again next year. Oh, no.

Again, thanks for a fun season, everybody. Keep in touch!

HEADS-UP ON TONIGHT'S GAME

Because we had such success with our 10-man lineup Monday, with 3 outfielders and Mike M roving all over the short outfield territory, we're going to do something similar tonight.

Twelve players tonight, so one shared position. Same defensive setup as Monday, with Mike M covering the left-side short outfield and Sue covering the right-side short outfield. Since we're playing the 65ers, few of them hit really deep, so Mike and Sue should hopefully field some short flies that would normally fall in as hits.

If this brainstorm turns out to be a disaster, we can easily and instantly go back to regular formation.

Here's our lineup for tonight (runners in parenthesis):

LF Dave L
RF Frank
C2 Eric
3B Bill (Sue)
CF John
SS Mike H (Rich)
1B Dave H (Dave L)
P Dan
EL Mike M (Frank)
2B Tom (Eric)
ER Sue
C1 Rich

Here's an interesting tidbit.

Remember the game we forfeited to Body 'n Sole? We got rained out in the 4th inning, and we were behind something like 9-0 and were scheduled to play one more inning, but we had several players unavailable and so just forfeited.

Well, in any forfeit, the score is officially 7-0. So by forfeiting, we went from a 9-run loss to a 7-run loss! (If you look at the scores on the schedule, you'll see that they do have it down as a 7-0 forfeit.)
