LAST HURRAH?
Tomorrow could be the last really nice day to hit some softballs. Yes, the season is over (except for a couple of rainout makeups), but that's no reason to avoid some fun outdoor exercise!

Hey, anything that can replace a two-mile walk on the treadmill is fine in my book.

So - for maybe the last time this year - softball batting practice, tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon from 2:00 to 3:30 at Dodds 3.

I will be out of town tomorrow afternoon (I have a booth at Gordyville), so unless one of our regulars is able to run the show, there will be no Sunday afternoon softball batting practice this week.

(Should one of you volunteer to host, let me know ASAP and I'll post a note to all three boards.)

SOFTBALL BATTING PRACTICE SUNDAY 2:00 - 3:30, DODDS 3

If we're not rained out. Fingers crossed!

If it rains overnight, I'll check out the field before lunchtime and let you know by noon if we're on or not.

Hope we can play - temp should be PERFECT finally!

NO SOFTBALL PRACTICE TODAY

Biked to the park this morning, and my first clue was that the little creek that runs through the park was flooded out of its banks.

And sure enough, the pitcher's rubber and all three bases are underwater today.

Fingers crossed for next Sunday....

I was talking to somebody at the party about Joe Penner (Dave? Rick? I can't remember). Penner had the top-rated show on radio in the late 1930s, but he did not age well and is pretty much unknown today. His famous catch-line "Wanna buy a duck" was deemed hilarious by the audiences of the time, and schoolkids would drive their teachers nuts by repeating it ad nauseum.

Anyway, I found this ad promoting four new stars of 1937, and thought you might find it interesting. Two of them are well-remembered, two of them are not.

Joe Penner is discussed above.

Milton Berle was popular until he died in 2002, mainly because he was known as "Mr. Television" in the early 1950s.

Parkyakarkus (Park Your Carcass) was a comedian whose real name was Harry Einstein. He is famous for two things: He died at the banquet table immediately after giving his speech at a roast for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and he had two sons who did well in show biz: Albert Brooks and Superdave Osborn. (Yes, Albert Brooks started out with the name Albert Einstein.)

And Harriet Hilliard was a nightclub torch singer who married her bandleader Ozzie Nelson and gave the world Ricky.

(Hey, this is what I DO in the off-season.)

SENIOR SOFTBALL MANAGERS' MEETING

Some rule changes resulted from tonight's meeting:

1. 65ers will become the 68ers, and the change affects both the players on the 65ers team (they have to be 68 now), and subs who play for other teams. Reason is that there are now 36 players in the league who will be 68 or over next season, and this change will allow more of the older players to get into the 68ers games. Also, the 65ers were winning big almost every week, so this should maybe make their games more even with the rest of the B league. (They can still pick up players from A league, but they have to be 68 or older.)

2. A team may pick up a 68er sub even if that team has 11 members present, as long as all 12 players hit. (This rule was passed because several times last season a team called a 68er to play, then at the last minute another player showed up unexpectedly, so the sub couldn't play.)

3. The slaughter rule is now optional. The manager of the team that is behind can stop the game or continue to play; his choice.

4. If you have a runner, you cannot be a runner for someone else in the same inning.

5. If a baserunner runs into a defensive player who has the ball, both the baserunner and the trailing runner are out. (Keeps the runner from trying to break up a double play.)

6. The league will be limited to 10 teams. If Esquire returns (and it's looking like they will be back), no new team may be added. If Esquire folds, another team may take their place. Reason being, ten teams allow us to do a double round-robin followed by a double-elimination tournament. Adding an 11th team and keeping that schedule would add ten more playing nights to the length of the season, and there would be six byes each week.

7. Baserunners must use the orange base at first if there is a play at first. If they go to the white base they are out.

8. Doubleheaders will be added to the schedule. Teams wanting them will get them, and teams not wanting them will not be scheduled for any.

Finally, the board for next year: Harry, Richard, Dan, Joe, and David Nisbet (same as this year, except David replaces Larry Crews).

SOFTBALL BATTING PRACTICE SUNDAY, 2-3:30, DODDS 3 PARK

Seems like all season my reminder note has said one of two things:

A. Gonna be really HOT so bring a cooler, or

B. We'll play if it stops raining and the field is dry.

Looks like "B" is the note for this week. Good chance of rain overnight; I'll buzz you again tomorrow about noon with the latest.

Hi again,

I am looking forward to seeing you at the CASA post-season softball party. The address again is 3905 Bluestem Court in Champaign (a blue house on a cul-de-sac in the Sawgrass subdivision) and please don’t take Bradley Avenue – you may have seen we’ve already had one young lady think she was Evil Knievel!! That didn’t go so well. Taking Springfield Avenue then north on Staley is best. I have heard from the following people:

• Dan/Kathy Hughes
• Robin Shively (taco dip)
• Mike & Dave Hannan (fruit salad & chips)
• John/Susan Sheahan
• Bill/Kerry McGeary
• Dave/Rena Leake (meats, beverages, table service)

I was hoping to hear from more of you! There’s still time to get in on the jocularity! You can email dleake@parkland.edu or text 217-840-0675. See you Wednesday night (Sept. 11), rain or shine, roughly 6pm.

Hi gang,

Regarding the post-season CASA softball party, here’s the official invitation. I only heard from a few of you so I hope most of the team can make it. It will be Wednesday, September 11, starting at 6pm at Dave & Rena Leake’s house. We live close to Parkland in the Sawgrass subdivision. The address is 3905 Bluestem Court, a cul-de-sac that opens out to Trailways Drive. Remember the bridge on Bradley Avenue is out so you’ll need to come out Springfield Avenue then north on Staley. My cell is 217-840-0675 if you need assistance. There is street parking. We live in a blue house. Maybe I’ll put a CASA jersey on the mailbox.

We’ll cook burgers and hots dogs on the grill. If it’s nice we can put a fire in the firepit. I’ll supply the meats, buns, condiments, table service, and we’ll have some soda pop, tea & beer. Please bring a dish to share (can be a salad, side, dessert) or your favorite beverage. This will be a rain or shine event as, if the weather isn’t favorable, we’ll cook on the porch and then be in our unfinished basement. I have ping pong and billiards there and I just cleaned it!

If you can give me an RSVP so I know how many to plan for, I’d appreciate it. Let me know what you might be bringing, too. You can reply to this note, text me at the number above (but tell me who you are) or email me directly at dleake@parkland.edu.

We hope to see you next week!

SOFTBALL BATTING PRACTICE IS STILL A GO!

Just back from the Dodds threeplex. A bit of water is standing on field 1, field 2 is pretty dry, and field 3 is not quite as dry as 2 but still probably playable.

So unless the wind and sun speed the drying process between now and 2:00, we'll play on field 2.

SOFTBALL BATTING PRACTICE, SUNDAY 2:00, DODDS 3

It will be interesting to see what kind of turnout we get in a holiday weekend.

We seem to do well on Mother's Day and Father's Day, but now that the season is over for all but fallball players (and senior tournament players), there are fewer people interested in playing.

Ah well, as long as people continue to show up, we'll keep these Sunday practices going.

Dave, the pickup rule changed midseason when we addressed the problem you pointed out. The way it now stands, if you are short one player, your pickup player has to be from the B league. If you are short two players, you can pick up one A league player. And if you are short three players, you can still pick up only one A player - the other two must be from B league. (If you are short more than three players, you forfeit.)

Still, there are plenty of B league players who are as good as the A leaguers.

Do you think I should suggest we prohibit A leaguers completely from B league (except for the 65ers)?

I agree that a team should not benefit from having their own players absent. It used to be that the 65ers were just that - older, slower, less effective players. But now, many of the 65ers are better players than a lot of the youngsters.

As for our roster size, there were two games where we needed to pick up subs. And in 11 of our 18 games, all of our players played the full game. In the other 7 games, two players shared a defensive position but batted the full game. Nobody sat more than twice the entire season. So I don't think we have a problem with our roster size. In fact, if Esquire quits the league, we may pick up a couple of their players for next season.

Robin, the pitching limits are 6 to 12 feet. The problem is that non-professional umps (and many professional umps, too) don't know 6 feet. The ump is supposed to yell "illegal pitch" immediately upon recognizing the pitch is too high or too low. But few of them do. Some wait until after the pitch has crossed the plate. Most of our umps have a hard time with this, and we've just gotta live with it.

If a pitch is called illegal, the batter can still swing at it, and then the illegal call is ignored. If the batter doesn't swing, the pitch is called a ball.

Your idea on separating infielders and outfielders is actually done in some leagues. I believe they have a chalked line across the outfield which the outfielders have to stay behind until the ball is hit, or the pitch is released. I can float this idea at the meeting, but I don't think anyone will want to go along with it. How would we establish a line, who would keep an eye on the fielders to determine whether or not they cheat, what would the punishment be. And another argument is that defensive players should be able to play where they think they are most effective. The pitcher and catcher are the only two players on the field who have assigned playing spots. So, lots of problems there.

I'm not suggesting a rule change as I know we play for fun (and it was fun!) and no one likes to show up to a game and find the other team is short players, but I guess it just bugged me a bit when we lost a game to a team we should have beaten but didn't because they picked up some really good players. Hester & Vicek are great guys but I think they both hit home runs off us. I'd never suggest dropping people from the team (we're NOT the HitMen) but sometimes I wonder if we're at a disadvantage by keeping so many on the roster. We could pick up a Hester or Vicek, too! Again, I'm not suggesting we do this or make any rules changes - just making an observation.

Dan,

Do you know what the min/max limits are on a pitched ball? I witnessed some pitches this year that would have been called "flat" in years past. Normally hitters "take" these pitches thinking they are not strikes because they did not reach a minimum height.

As for a rule change, I feel that wherever the "extra" fielder starts the inning, infield or outfield, that player must play the entire inning as a infielder or outfielder. He may move left or right, depending on how he feels the hitter may try and place the ball.

Too many times, defensive players load up the infield on hitters that have a hard time hitting the ball out of the infield.

Thanks,
Robin
Thanks

The managers will be meeting soon to discuss league rules for next season. Please let me know if you have any concerns or ideas for rules changes.

Here is the working draft of what I plan to suggest. Your comments?

2020 SENIOR SOFTBALL SEASON, RULES PROPOSALS

1. Rule 20. Do away with the slaughter rule, at least in the lower league. We don't care what the score is, we want to play a full game. Twenty games this season ended early because of the slaughter rule, three of them in the 4th inning, and several players on the losing side batted only once in many of those games. Some of these guys come from 40 miles or more to get to the ballpark, and they want to play their full allotted time. They are there for the exercise, and they don't much care about the score. Driving longer than they play isn't much fun.

2. Umpiring was too spotty. Umps thrown in at last minute, call one inning, another ump next inning. And some umpires (like me) are not very good at it. Would like to see full-game umps, no matter what team they play for. When a player sits out the game to ump the game for his team, he should ump for the other team too.

3. The three lower-league teams appreciated being able to play each other twice to determine the tournament entrant. But we all know that whatever team won, that team would be eliminated quickly. So perhaps instead of the winning team advancing to the tournament, an "all-star" team made of players from these three teams could play in the tournament. Perhaps let the team that wins the 3-team tournament send 5 players, and the other two teams send 3 each. Let each team vote on their own all-stars.

4. I heard a lot of complaints about the division-switching we did at midseason with Loman Ray and Fat City. A suggestion: Instead of switching divisions if a huge disparity arises, at midseason have the managers vote to give runs to whichever teams are consistently losing by large margins.
