All the Dodds fields are lined and have the short outfield fences up, which means they are closed to practices. (Click on the photo to see the new fences.)

I don't know why they were lining the threeplex fields this afternoon. There is a junior baseball tournament in Champaign scheduled for next weekend, but since their outfield fences are up now, I wonder if they plan to just leave them up all summer. If they do, that pretty much eliminates our Sunday practices. I'll keep you posted.

There are several weekend baseball tournaments scheduled for this summer, and they generally use all the fields in town, including Dexter. Sorry, everybody!

1. ALL BATS used in Park District softball this season MUST be stickered before they can be used. You can either drop your bats off at Matt's office in the Leonhard Center and pick them up the next day, or you can bring them by the Dodds fourplex any night when games are being played and have the site supervisor sticker them while you wait. My two bats (the orange Mayhem and the yellow Catalyst) are already stickered, and you're welcome to use them if yours isn't stickered by opening night.

2. Still need to hear from Rich, Dave L, and Dave H as to whether or not they can make our opener (Mon, May 1).

3. If any of you plan on attending the Newman practice Sunday, be advised the ballpark is on the EAST end of town, not the west as was stated in Steve's note.

The Monday night practice game is off - no fields were available. I got this note from Steve. I can't make it, but if any of you are free Sunday afternoon/evening, please feel free to head to Newman:

I have been able to schedule the Memorial Park diamond at Newman for a practice on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. The field is located right on Route #36 on the West end of Newman.

Dan Hughes--you and your guys are welcome.

Our first game is Monday, May 1, at 6:15.

Because we have fewer players this season, and several players who play on other teams, and already a preseason injury, we are going to have trouble getting our 11 players for several of our games.

So I hate to do it, but I have to ask everyone to let me know by the DAY BEFORE each game if you're not going to be there. That will give me time to line up some 65ers to sub for us.

As always, for the first game let me know you WILL be there. After that, let me know when you WON'T be there, and again, at least a day in advance please.

As for our proposed practice game, I need to hear from you by 7pm tomorrow (Wednesday) if you can play or not next Monday. So far, we have just Tom, two Daves, and me. Not quite enough to field a team!

Loman-Ray wants to play a practice game with us. Please let me know if you can or can't play at 6:00 next Monday, April 24. We don't know yet if we can get the field then, but first we need to know if we have enough players before we try to rent a field.

So please reply as to whether or not you could be there if we get it set up.

Just back from the ballpark, and not only are the fields dry, they have been dragged and all the lumps are gone. Unless we have more rain before 2:00, we're good to go.

So if you need to work off that Easter dinner, c'mon out and hit a couple of buckets of balls.

Dodds 2, 2:00 to 4:00 this afternoon.

Softball batting practice tomorrow, BUT...

I was at the threeplex this afternoon. The infield was a bit soft and there was a bit of water standing on one of the diamonds, but I think by tomorrow afternoon the fields should be playable (although the infields on all three diamonds are full of hard footprints).

HOWEVER, there were brand new bases installed on all three diamonds. This makes me think that perhaps the fields will be used for some games tomorrow night. (The season starts tomorrow). If that be the case, the park district may be lining the fields tomorrow afternoon and they may not be available for practice.

ALSO, I have not asked about renting the fields yet, and they could possibly be already spoken for tomorrow afternoon.

NONETHELESS, I will be out there with my bucket of balls and bats, ready to practice IF a field is available. If not, we're pretty much shut down. You are welcome to take a chance and come on out to see if we're on or not.

SO, if you want to risk it along with me, see you at the Dodds threeplex, Sunday afternoon 2 to 4, as usual.

Well, just go back from fishing in Florida and all this happened. First off, Steve I will miss playing with you and hope your shoulder gets back to where you can come back. We hope that you're able to attend a couple of our games.
Bobby, I too will miss playing with you and all you bring to the team. I understand where your coming from and hope you have a good season for Lohman Ray, just not against us.
Joyce, I'm happy you get to play with your husband. I've been lucky enough to play with both my kids and it's a great experience. We will miss all that you brought to the team; ability, attitude and cookies!!!

Hello Joyce... I know you have been wanting to play on the same team as your husband's and finally your wish has come through. Just think, your husband can now play on the same team as you :-). We are going to miss you (and your softball talents). Fare forward and have a wonderful season. Tom

Hi guys...and Sue! Joyce here. Before I actually started playing with CASA, it was my, and my hubby's desire to play on the same team. Unfortunately, not all guys were as open to women playing as you were to take me on. Millions of hugs for that! This year, we were offered that opportunity with a newly formed team in the league. We are taking a flying leap and going to do just that. I am excited to be on the same team as him! I will miss you guys like crazy and want to thank you all for your kindness and acceptance. You are special people! Dan, special thanks to you for your hard work with coaching the team and league representation. Couldn't have a fairer guy for the job! Good luck to the team this coming season. Best wishes, Joyce!

With the condition of my right shoulder since that Sunday practice so many weeks ago, it appears my recovery and/or the desire to be without pain for the rest of my life may dictate my giving up both tennis and softball. So I am just letting you know that I am not going to play. I will try to come to cheer you on.

Best wishes and have a great season.

If anyone else wants more playing time and doesn't mind moving to another team, Loman-Ray may still be looking.

Drop a note to Steve Allen (he's the pitcher who stands 10 feet behind the pitching rubber!) at sallenfarm@gmail.com and see if he still needs more.

Not trying to chase anyone away; just saying we have plenty of players, and Steve may not have enough, and such a move would probably give everybody more at-bats.

If you are moving to another team, please let me know before I write up the team roster! (Probably the middle of April.)

Don't blame you at all, Bobby, Loman Ray is indeed short and you'll get more playing time there. And Steve Allen is great to play with; you'll fit in well. I'll still be playing a lot of games with you, probably, because Loman Ray usually needs to pick up some 65ers to field a team.

Best of luck, except when you're playing against us!

Hey guys!

With 17 guys on the roster, it makes it very difficult for the team to get through the batting order more than twice in our normal game. I contacted a couple of other teams to see how their numbers were, and Loman Ray only has 12 players, which makes it tough to field a team during the season. They are a great group of guys, just like Casa is, but I think it makes more sense for me to fill out their roster as opposed to being one of the many on the bench for Casa. This will likely open up a little room on Casa and make you a little more competitive, having your batting order turn over more. Let me add, no one on Loman Ray recruited me or asked me to play on that team. I just though it made sense to help out a team that could use a player.

You guys know how much I enjoyed playing with all of you, and I’m sure you’ll look forward to kicking my ass when we play against you; especially you, Mike!

All the best to all of you.

Softball practice tomorrow (Sunday) IF IT DOESN'T RAIN!

I was on the Dodds 3-plex this afternoon, and the infield was a bit spongy but playable. Should be a bit stiffer tomorrow, if it doesn't rain.

I'll post again tomorrow and let you know for sure.

ALSO - They've cut down all the light posts on the 3-plex - no lights at all there now. They will spend the summer putting up new lights. The photo is what's left of one of the light posts.

Hey, even with the hundred miles per hour winds yesterday, we had about a dozen hearty souls show up for batting practice.

Jeff Lauchner from Hal's team was there. He brought a pitcher's screen, but the wind kept blowing it down and sliding it across the infield.

He said that four guys quit Hal to start their own team, and he's pretty sure they're full up. So it looks like 11 teams, which means three teams with byes every night.

I vote for A - works OK so far and injuries seem to be a regular part of senior ball, so we never know who needs to sit out an inning or two. Then we have work schedules plus vaca so A gives us most flexibility.

I like the even and odd innings with that player playing the whole game the next time
Dan HughesPerson was signed in when posted
08:59 PM CT (US)
It looks like we'll have at least 17 players again this season. Since we can put just 11 on the field at a time, there will be a lot of sit-out time for everyone again this year. There have been complaints about fielders sharing positions, going in every other inning.

I'd like to hear from you as to whether you'd rather sit out half a game but bat the full game, as we have always done,

Should we bat AND field just 11 players at a time?

If we do that, should we switch players in after the 3rd inning, or should we play the same 11 the full game? In other words, should sit-outs be for a full game instead of a half game?

So here are the choices:

A. Everybody bats, some field odd innings, the rest field even innings (as we have always done).

B. Only players on the field bat, and we change roster players after 3 innings so everybody who shows up plays at least half a game.

C. Just play the same 11 players the whole game, rotating the players who sit out each game.

The danger with C is that if we have just 11 players show up because they are the only ones scheduled to play, if one gets hurt, on defense we are short a fielder and each time the hurt player's batting spot comes up, he's an automatic out.

Anyway, I'd like your vote, either here on the board or privately at danhughesmail@gmail.com.

And finally,

Bobby won't play infield at Dexter. Does anyone else have similar concerns I should know about?

Dan HughesPerson was signed in when posted
08:41 PM CT (US)
This is the letter that is being sent to the other senior softball managers:

"Since we were all unhappy to varying degrees about the Champaign Park District’s plan to move our league games to Dexter, we put together a letter outlining all the reasons the managers thought that was a bad idea, on the grounds of safety (rough ground, poor lights, short fence, etc.), convenience and amenities (limited parking, no sanitary facilities or concessions, limited seating), and synergy (by which we meant that to recruit new players we need to see and be seen by younger teams).

Mike Lindemann, co-owner of Body ‘n Sole then met with the Park District Director and the Director of Recreation, presenting his concerns as a player, which were those in the letter we sent, and as a sponsor (loss of visibility). He was informed that the reason we were moved to Dexter was because three fields at Dodds are being shut down for renovation this summer but that they would try to get us back there as soon as possible. The next day Matt Silver sent us an e-mail with this information:

'After more discussion and internal coordinating, we are working on an updated schedule in which your last few weeks and single elimination tournament will be held at Dodds Park . . . . We will provide more Porta Potties at Dexter during your season as well as a handwashing station.  Extra picnic tables will be provided for spectators and we are working on some more ideas to assist the group as a whole.'
Mike and the three of us, while less than happy with the outcome, do not believe that any further pleading, protest, or abject whining will change the decisions approved at the Director’s level and would probably be counter productive.

We are therefore resigned to playing the most part of the season at Dexter.

Roger Clark, Dan Hughes, and Harry Rakers"
