New team photo is up.... We look pretty good, except that Dave Hannan is hiding behind his brother. (Lizz took three shots, and in all three of them Dave was hidden. Maybe we can try again....)

Once again, it was that last inning that did us in ...

The clock ran out in the 5th inning, so we had one more to play with the score tied at 8-8. They got 6; we got 0. They just kept dropping shallow flies over the infielders' heads, and they had an uncanny knack for lining the ball sharply between Mike H and Bill. Killed us with the short ball!

Even though we lost by 6, I still enjoyed the game much more than the games where we played the upper division and had no chance of winning. Anybody else want me to float the idea that next season we play in separate divisions all year, and not start with a round robin?

Stars tonight:

Greg and I (cough, cough) went 3 for 3, and Dave L was 3 for 4.

Eric, Mike H, Sue, and Dave H were all 2 for 3.

Frank and I each hit a triple, and Dave L and Greg both hit doubles.

By the way, I hung around because I was scheduled to pitch the 9:00 game for the Fasteners. As usual, games ran late, and at about 9:20, when the 8:00 game was still in the 3rd or 4th inning, they announced the 9:00 game had been postponed because rain was coming. Well, it's 10:45 as I write this, and the rain hasn't arrived yet. (Well, a few sprinkles, but I still think they jumped the gun).

The Good: We led 5-3 after 4 1/2 innings. Loman-Ray got 2 in the first, 1 in the second, and 0 in the third and fourth innings.

The Bad: We gave up 9 runs in the next two innings and lost, 12-6.

On the positive side, Dave L had a great game - 3 for 4 with 2 triples, and he scored 3 times.

Frank went 3 for 4, and John, Dave H, and I all went 2 for 3.

And Mike H batted in 4 of our 6 runs.

Let's take a team photo Wednesday. We don't have one for this year, and I'm thinking most (maybe even all) of us will be there. We'll do it right after the game, because we're usually scrambling to get everybody there by game time.

The team we beat 4-3 in the first half of the season beat us tonight, 14-7. We each had a 5-run inning, but they scored in every inning (5 - 1 - 3 - 3 - 2), and we had just two other scoring innings (one run in each). Three innings where we didn't score at all.

In our one good inning, we sent 9 players to the plate, and 8 of them got on base. Five runs scored, so we had to stop. With just one out and the bases loaded! Thanks to that inning, our team on-base average climbed from .479 to .485. If that particular stat keeps going up, we should win some more ball games.

Individuals: Greg went 3 for 3 and had our only double of the game.

Dave L was 3 for 4; all of them were walks!

Bill, Tom, Dave H, Rich and I all went 2 for 3. And the only player who didn't get on base at least once was our sub, Richard Riggs.

No game Wednesday; next Monday we play Loman-Ray.

Other News:

Remember last week I mentioned that one of the Hitmen threatened to hit middle because he didn't like my high pitches? He was their shortstop, and he died suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday, of a heart attack.

In the 65ers-Esquire game, the 65ers led 8-1 until the 6th inning. Then it got suddenly tight, and the 65ers finally won it 9-8. TWICE in that game, the 65ers took an automatic out because the player who was supposed to bat was on base, pinch-running for another player.

And in the Fasteners-Cler game, going into the last inning the score was tied, 15-15. Then Cler got 8, the Fasteners answered with 0, making the final score 23-15.

With just John and Frank out Monday night, we have our 11.

That is assuming that Eric will be there.

If Eric can't come, then Frank can play for us until about 6:40. By then there should be a 65er there (for the next game) that we can sub in for Frank.

So Eric, let us hear from you!

I feel like I lost this one pretty much by myself. On offense, three popups in three at-bats (one with two outs and the bases loaded). On defense, two grounders right at me went under my glove, allowing runs to score. And I walked the first batter of the game, and he scored.

Inning-by-inning scoring:
Esquire 3 - 0 - 0 - 2 - 3 - 0 - 0 = 8
CASA... 3 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 2 - 2 = 7

Look at that - we went four straight innings without a run! You don't DO that in slowpitch softball!

In our last game, we needed 3 to win in the bottom of the last inning, and we got them. Tonight, we needed 3 to tie and 4 to win, and we had the tying and winning runs on base when the 3rd out was recorded.

We did have some nice batting. Mike H was 3 for 3. Eric went 3 for 4. Sue, John S, and Tom went 2 for 3. And Rich smashed a triple in the last inning.

Our team on-base average didn't move at all - it's still .479.

Monday we're visitors against Lazer's Edge, another game we have a great chance of winning. (We beat them 4-3 in the first half of the season.) Game time is 6:15, which seems to mean 6:10 to our umps. Be there early!

Sue-Eric-Mike, do you have conflicting games? I need to know early if we won't have 11, so I can recruit subs before game day (we play the first game, so we can't pick up 65ers from an earlier game).

That's us, for the second half of the season! We're 1 and 0! SWEET!

For those of you not there, we beat the 65ers 8-7, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 6th (time had run out, so we went just 6 innings). We were down 7-5 after 5 1/2 innings, and we needed - and got - 3 to win (and had two outs when the winning run scored - so we could have kept going).

Scoring went like this:

65'ers. 0 - 0 - 3 - 0 - 2 - 2 = 7
CASA . 1 - 0 - 0 - 3 - 1 - 3 = 8

Mike M pitched for us tonight, and though he had a few walks, he got the outs when we needed them.

Our team on-base average went up 10 points (and the more games we play, the harder it is to move that OBA very much).

Several players had good games batting tonight. Dave L led off and went 4 for 4, with a single, two doubles, and a triple. He also scored 3 runs, and he batted in the winning run.

Bill batted second and was 3 for 3, with a run and 3 RBIs.

Mike M, John S, Dave H, and Rich all went 2 for 3.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Okay. Wednesday we play Esquire, who beat us last time by scoring 8 runs in the last inning. But they had a couple of ringers playing for them, and that hurt. I think we can take them this time. Should be a fun game! Who won't be there?

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

In the game after ours, I pitched for the Fasteners, against Pia's Hitmen. It went pretty well for 4 innings; score was maybe 14-9 (Hitmen leading). But the Hitmen were complaining that my pitches were too high. (Confession: They were! At least 3 feet over the limit. But the ump was responsible for calling them illegal, and he didn't, so I kept throwing them.)

So one of the Hitmen said my pitches were so high that he couldn't control his hitting, and that he might hit middle, but not on purpose of course. And he did just that - the next several batters slammed line drives back at me. Hey, I'm turning 70 next month! I don't need line drives at me, especially from guys with their power.

Anyway, they upped their score to 25 in the last inning, and the members of the Fasteners were disgusted with the fact that the Hitmen didn't flipflop for the last inning (they didn't offer to let us bat again), and with their hit-the-pitcher tactics. So the Fasteners just walked out of the park after getting them out in the top of the last inning, refusing their last at-bats. I don't know if it will go down as a forfeit or a 25-9 loss. My guess is that the Fasteners will refuse to play the Hitmen when they come up again in the schedule. I know I won't pitch against them again. Several of the Fasteners were saying we should go to the park district and tell them we won't play against the Hitmen next season. Sounds good to me.

The new senior league schedules are out! We play 8 games from July 10 to August 9. Six of those games are at 6:15, and the other two at 7:00.

Our first game is Monday (July 10) at 7:00 against the 65ers. Then on Wednesday (July 12) we play Esquire at 6:15. We are home team for both games.

Links to the CASA schedule and the entire "B" league schedule are posted in the header of our team discussion board.

I just sent this note to Matt at the park district:

Matt, I have just learned that we (CASA) cannot field a team tomorrow night (July 3) because seven of my players are either injured or gone on holiday.

So we hereby officially forfeit the game to Body 'n Sole. (This was the completion of a rain-delay game in which we had just 2 innings left, and we were behind 9-0.)

Please let Body 'n Sole and the umpire know! And let me know that you got this note okay! THANKS!

(Hmmm. Does a forfeit change the score from 9-0 to 7-0? Pretty weird when forfeiting is a good strategy!)

Hi Dan,

There is a 50/50 chance that I won't be able to make it to the July 3rd game. I know that it is a make up game, but it isn't very smart of the park district to schedule games on days before a holiday

Looks like the fields are finally ours for a Sunday afternoon.

So, practice at 2:00 Sunday afternoon at Dodds 3. We'll go an hour or two, depending on how hot it is.

Bummer, guys. We only got to play 6 innings because the clock ran out. After 5, they led 11-10. But then in the top of the 6th, they got 8! Final score Esquire 19, CASA 12.

Still, our team on-base average went up 16 points. Best performers:

Frank, Dave H, and Tom were all 3 for 3. Frank had a triple, and Dave H had two doubles.

Dave L and I were both 2 for 3, and we both hit a double.

And Dave H and Tom each had 3 RBIs.

 - - - - - - - - - - -

I pitched the first three games tonight. In the 8:00 game, the Fasteners did surprisingly well against the Hitmen. The Hitmen usually get their 5 runs most every inning, but their scoring tonight went like this: 2 - 2 - 5 - 0- 5. In that 4th inning, I threw just 4 pitches to retire the side. The Fasteners didn't hit well, though, and the final score was Hitmen 14, Fasteners 6.

On Monday night (July 3), we finish our game against Body 'n Sole at 8:00. Doesn't make a lot of sense, because they are leading 9 - 0 in the top of the 5th. They have one out and two on. Greg and Sue won't be there - anyone else?

Rumor has it that there will be 6 teams in the upper division and 5 in the lower. Our division will be us, Lazer's Edge, Esquire, Loman-Ray, and the 65ers. We will play each of those teams twice in the second half of the season. Should be some wins in there!

And I also heard (not sure it's true) that all of the lower-division games (that would be us) will be at 6:15 and 7:00, and all the upper-division games will be at 8:00 and 9:00. Fine with me - I can't see that ball in the dark.

Just 9 of us tomorrow night, but I should be able to pick up two subs to fill us out.

Here are our absentees: Mike H, Sue, John S, and Dave L. Anybody I missed? (Dave, if you get to the game before it's over, you'll go in and one of the subs will come out.)

Should be a good game, with an excellent chance of us winning.

PLEASE be there by 6:00! If we have the same ump we had last week, he starts the game five minutes early.

The Hit Men beat the Split Men (Cler's) last night, sad to say. Bill, I didn't get the final score? 13-9 maybe?

As often happens, we got off to a good start but then sputtered out.

We got 5 hits and 3 runs in the top of the first, but after that no more than one run per inning. We only played 6 innings because the clock ran out, but the Fasteners got 4 - 3 - 0 - 3 - 5 to beat us 15-7.

Our best performers at the plate tonight were Eric and Bill, who each went 3 for 4.

Mike M, Dennis Harper (sub), Frank, and I were all 2 for 3.

We had two extra-base hits; Dennis and Frank both hit a double.

And our team on-base average went up 6 points. We DID hit better than usual; 7 runs is pretty heady for us.

Next Wednesday is our best chance for our second win of the season; we play Esquire. But Esquire got their first win of the season tonight, beating the 65ers, so they are no pushover. We gotta bring our best!

By the way, I hit a homer (actually a triple with a throwing error that let me score) in the 65ers game. First one in a few years!

And after that game, Old Time Meat and Deli asked me to hang out in case their pitcher didn't show up. While I was waiting, I chatted with one of the players on the team. I asked him what he did, and he told me he was an author. Sounded interesting, so I asked him what he wrote. And he said, the Veggie Tales books! He's done over 20 of them; also several adult novels. Zowie! Another celeb in our league!
