TONIGHT'S GAMES ARE ON!

Just back from the ballpark - fields are lined and the games are on for tonight. After yesterday's rain, I'm surprised the fields are playable.

So, see you all tonight! Our game is at 9:00 vs Lazers.

The park district says they will announce rainouts by 4:00 pm.

Today, the fields on the fourplex were being lined when I got to the threeplex at about 1:50 pm. The park district sent out a notice at 1:58 pm that the games tonight were on.

We were practicing when the rain started coming down bigtime at about 2:30. By 2:40 it was obvious that there would be no ballgames tonight - water was literally running across the diamonds, and there was no way they would be dry enough to play later today.

But the park district didn't announce the games were off because of standing water until 5:28 pm - three hours after the rain made the fields into wading pools.

Here's what I think happened:

The guys lining the fields finished at 2:00, and called in that the fields were ready to go. Matt Silver (or somebody official) posted that the games were a go. It was still beautiful out, so all seemed well.

Nobody was then at the park until nearly 5:30, when the concession people showed up and found the fields under water. They called it in, and the park district finally made the announcement that the games were off.

I feel for the people who had an hours' drive to get to a 6:00 game, and when they got here had to turn around and go home because the park district didn't let anyone know until nearly 5:30 that the games were off.

AFTERMATH.

The weather was gorgeous at 2:00. Lots of sun and white clouds, not a gray cloud in the sky. We started batting practice; we had 8 players. Six of them hit a bucket of balls each, and then it started to sprinkle a little. No big deal; we kept playing.

Then it started to RAIN. We all retreated to the third base dugout, and the rain just kept getting stronger. The wind blew it into the dugout; we were all drenched to the bone in no time.

When it finally let up, maybe 15 minutes later, the infield was literally under water and a heavy flow of water was surging through the dugout.

So when we were able to get off the field, we all went home.

But hey, six of us got to hit.

(Click on the picture to see it in its full glory.)

1:38 PM - STILL NO RAIN BUT WHO KNOWS

My best advice is, if you're not too far away, c'mon out to Dodds. But if it's much of a drive for you, probably best stay home.

With this kind of weather, you just never know. But the bottom line is, the forecast still calls for afternoon rain here.

SOFTBALL BATTING PRACTICE TODAY - MAYBE

No rain yet, but looks menacing. I'll post again at 1:30 as to whether we'll hit or not. The fields are dry now, but even a little bit of rain will probably stick because the ground is pretty well saturated.

SOFTBALL BATTING PRACTICE ON FOR TOMORROW (SUNDAY, JUNE 23)

Just back from the fields (5:30 Saturday afternoon), and Dodds 1 and 2 are good to go. Dodds 3 has water around 3rd base, but I'm guessing the steady wind will dry it up by tomorrow afternoon.

So let's plan on a 2:00 Sunday afternoon practice session on Dodds 2. Everyone welcome - bring a friend.

UNLESS there is rain between now tomorrow afternoon - then we may have to cancel.

I'll post an update about noon tomorrow - stay tuned.

Speaking of Wilbur, do you know how they made Mr. Ed's lips move?

No, not peanut butter - that was a lie the studio made up. And not wires, as the studio adamantly denied.

They used thin, invisible-to-the-camera STRING. (I know this because Jon Provost told me - he played a paperboy in one episode, and he saw firsthand how the string system worked.) And you can see it working in this photo.

Quick recap, it's late and I'm bushed....

Lots of errors and bad bounces tonight! We deserved to lose, but they didn't deserve to win. Just a sloppy game all around.

Robin was our only batter to go 3 for 3. Rick and Greg were 2 for 3 (Rick with a double), and I was 2 for 4.

Gotta shout about Frank's defensive play tonight. Kathy heard one of the Fat City players call him a web. I think that's good.

John sent us some good ideas about repositioning the outfield, and I think we'll experiment a bit next game. More on that later...

Oh! And by the way, Lazer's Edge beat the 65ers tonight by the slaughter rule! 12-2 in 6 innings. The 65ers had more A players than they were supposed to have, and they still got clobbered!

Dan - a thought about outfield positioning. What do you think about going with three traditional outfielders (RF, CF, LF) and positioning the fourth outfielder in short left field? Dave has to respect the hitters and can't play too close in in left field, and we have a lot of hits that get there in against us in short left field. I have gotten few balls in left center, so maybe the right center fielder could just cover a traditional center field. That would leave the extra fielder to cover either short center field or move in to the infield right at second base.

NO BATTING PRACTICE TOMORROW (June 16)

All the Dodds fields are in use from 8am to 6pm Sunday with the GameDay USA Father's Day tournament. (All their Saturday games were rained out, so they're hoping to catch up and finish tomorrow.)

I thought about trying Dexter, but I went over there tonight and found big ponds on the pitcher's plate and all three bases. Totally unplayable. With more rain in the forecast.

So, hopefully NEXT Sunday.

8:00 - 6 Hound
9:00 - Pia's Hitmen

Well, we lost tonight, but I was pretty happy with our performance nonetheless. Well, our performance in the field, anyway.

We held them scoreless in 2 innings, and limited them to one run in 3 more innings. The 4th inning was the only one where they scored more than one run. (They got 3.)

In our first game with them, they beat us 13-0 in 5 innings. This time they won 6-1, so it was a definite improvement for us.

Problem is, we're not getting on base. In 3 innings we went down 1-2-3. In 2 other innings we got just one single. We had 6 hits total, 5 singles and a triple.

Dave L hit the triple, leading off the 7th inning, and he scored on my single.

We had just 6 hits in the game, less than one per inning. Donna, Robin, Rick, Bill, and I each had a hit, and Dave L smacked a triple. And that was it for us.

Practice Sunday for those who can make it, and no game Monday. See you Wednesday night for our first game in the second half of the season. (Good grief, we're half done already!)

First and most important: ROBIN GOT ALL YOUR COOKIES.

Kathy and I brought a jar of chocolate chip cookies, and when Robin got to the park I offered him some. Then I promptly forgot about them, and left them with Kathy rather than bringing them into the dugout.

I'll try to get them into the dugout Wednesday night. Sorry! Somebody should have reminded me - especially when you all saw the chocolate all over Robin's mouth.

Okay, the ball game. A couple of the Esquire players were raging mad because we used Robert Sturkey and Jeff Visec as subs, but we wouldn't let them use Jeff Hester. I don't know how many of you heard them yelling at the beginning of the game, saying they would just go home if Jeff Hester couldn't play. I told them to go ahead and play him, but they didn't. I don't know if that was their manager's decision or if Jeff just left because he knew he'd be breaking the rules.

The rule is this: If you're short one player, a sub must come from the B league. If you're short two players, your first sub must be from the B league and your second sub can be from either league.

When I found out two days ago we'd be short a player, I buzzed Robert (a B player) and asked him to play with us. Then today, when I found out Frank couldn't play, I asked Jeff Visec (an A player) to join us. All exactly according to the rules.

Esquire was short one player, so they needed a B sub, but since tonight's 7:00 and 8:00 games were both A league games, there were no B league 65ers around to play for them. So they asked Jeff Hester - but he's an A league player, so not eligible to sub in the B league unless another B sub has already been picked up.

Afterward, Ole (their lefty left fielder) argued - and rightly so - that league affiliation often doesn't correspond with individual playing ability, and basing eligibility on which team you play on makes no sense. And he's right - there are lots of A players in B, and vice-versa. The ideal way to do this is to rate each player as an A or a B, regardless of what team they're on. But we just didn't have time to do that, we needed the rule change immediately, and this was the only quick way of getting fewer A players in B league games.

Anyway, that's what all the fuss was about.

Now, finally, the recap.

Our second win of the season, and a solid win. Even without Robert and Jeff, we scored 12 runs.

Individually, I was 3 for 4, and Dave L and Joe were 2 for 4.

Dave H was perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3 and scoring all three times.

Robert, Rick, Donna, and Greg were all 2 for 3. Robin had a 3-run triple, and Joe and Dave H both had run-scoring doubles.

And our team on-base average went from .466 to .493. Let's get it up to .500!

Frank, I've already picked up one sub, and we need two more if you can't make it. I can probably get one of them from the game just before ours, but since it's an A game I can't get both subs from that game. We may have to play with just 10. So if you can make it, it sure would help. Let me know!

But if we're in danger of forfeiting tonight, I may have to revise my plans. And until further notice, I won't be able to make any Wednesday games. We did a lot better on paper tonight than we did on the field!

Last time we faced this team we won 14-12. Tonight we lost 15-3 in 5 innings. They got 5 runs in each of the first three innings. We held them scoreless in the 4th, but it was too late. They held us to just 3 runs in the whole game, so the game ended by the 10-runs-after-5-innings rule.

But everyone batted at least twice tonight, and we put runs on the board. We couldn't say that in the two previous games.

Here's who had decent nights at bat tonight:

Both Daves and Joe were 2 for 3 tonight. And Bill, Eric, Rick, John, and Donna were all 1 for 2. Eleven hits in the game

Dave L, Joe, and Donna each scored a run. Dave H had 2 RBIs, and Bill had 1 RBI.

I saw a lot of discouragement in the dugout tonight, but we gotta remember: This is RECREATIONAL softball, and we're all out there for relaxation and exercise. I keep remembering my 50th high school reunion, with all those guys in wheelchairs and dragging oxygen tanks behind them. And I'm still playing ball every week! I almost feel guilty.

It's great to win, but it's okay to lose too. What makes me sad isn't losing, it's not getting to play a full game. I hate the slaughter rule and will try to get it changed next season. I'd rather lose by 30 and keep playing, than to stop after 30 minutes/5 innings because of the score. I want to play ball my full allotted hour.

I think the lopsided scores our last three games are an aberration; at least against Lazer's Edge and Esquire we play fairly evenly when we have all our players. Granted, they have both picked up a few really good players this year, but we're pretty good too, when we're hitting on all cylinders.

Monday night we play Esquire; we lost to them last time 8-3. I'll bring candy or cookies, so we'll give ourselves some super energy and go-power and be ready to play hard. See you then!

Zowie, Loman-Ray was REALLY good tonight. Power hitters with two balls all the way to the fence, and a lot of long balls (and short balls for that matter) that went between our fielders. And it didn't help that we were missing Dave L, Greg, and Frank.

We just couldn't put a string of hits together. We had six singles in the entire game, no other hits (or walks). And we had just one runner reach second base.

Rick and Sue were 1 for 1, and Joe, Bill, Mike, and I were 1 for 2.

BUT TO GET POSITIVE AGAIN, our next two games are definitely winnable. We beat Lazers Edge first time we played them, and we lost to Esquire 8-3.

No games Monday (holiday), so our next game is Wednesday, May 29, at 8:00 against Lazers Edge.
