NU Education Services – Draft ProposalView comments on this item Add your comment on this item1

This is part of the text of an email sent by David Braden to Larry Victor on August 9, 2005. This document and the response to it is confidential.  I have moved some of the sentences around to group content for targeted response.   -- Larry Add your comment on this item2

I guess I do have mental imagery. I woke up this morning with the image of a handful of change as a marginal note to a document. It reminded me of the guy that figured out the benzene atom (don't remember the name) dreaming of monkeys holding each others tails. I was thinking of the feedback mechanisms for NU Educational Services. (Just a name for reference - we can call it something else.)View comments on this item Add your comment on this item3

The goal is to create a structure that re-enforces the mutual benefit of the stakeholders. I see four stakeholders. They are View comments on this item Add your comment on this item4

(1) the Platform Owners,  The Platform Owners are entitled to compensation for the idea and its implementation and as a source of capital to continually improve the platform towards glonet.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item5

(2) the Users, The Users are entitled to an ever increasing quality and usefulness of content.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item6

(3) the Content Providers, The Content Providers are entitled to compensation based on the usefulness of their contributions to the Users.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item7

 4) the Evaluators,   I have not yet fully grasped how the Evaluators would work but they are, similarly, entitled to compensation based on their value to the users.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item8

Say that NU Educational Services charged a monthly subscription fee of $5 and we had 1 million Users. That $5 million would be disbursed first to expenses of the Platform Owners and then a percentage to the Platform Owners as return on capital, a percentage to the Content Providers and a percentage to the Evaluators. The Platform Owners would retain the right to change the percentages as necessary to stimulate improved quality of content and service.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item9

The Users would access the site through scripts submitted by the Content Providers. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item10

Before leaving the script the User would be required to rate the script. They could give a penny for mildly interesting, a nickel or dime for more interesting and a quarter for transformative information (or some such). View comments on this item Add your comment on this item11

To the extent that a User reached a high quality script from another script, the referring script should receive some portion of the rating credit encouraging Content Providers to refer Users in that way. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item12

If a User found a script not useful, they would be required to provide a comment such as “one sided”, “Too technical”, or “boring”, which information would be available to the Content Provider. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item13

At the end of each month, the Platform Owners would distribute the Content Providers' share of proceeds to them in proportion to the ratings received from Users. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item14

Anyone could be a Content Provider by simple registration of scripts. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item15

The Platform Owners would retain the right to delete scripts with objectionable materials. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item16

If a User needed assistance, they could ask for help from an Evaluator. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item17

After receiving assistance, the User would rate the Evaluator in a similar fashion and, the next time they need help, they could either go back to that same Evaluator or choose a different Evaluator. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item18

The system should have a graphic display of scripts showing in varying size based on the total rating and showing the links between scripts. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item22

The system should keep track of each Users steps and that information should be available to the User in case they want to go back to something. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item23

A User could authorize an Evaluator to access that information. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item24

The Platform Owners would agree that such information would only be used for statistical purposes and would not be disclosed in connection with the User's personal information.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item25

The Users will continue using the Platform so long as they can obtain the information that they need or find interesting. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item26

Content Providers will earn more to the extent that they provide information in a way that Users find useful or interesting. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item27

For inexperienced Users, the structure provides assistance that should improve as the Evaluators are rated. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item28

Providing content and evaluation are two functions of an educator and in this structure, the best educators will have more and more opportunity while those less skilled will not prosper.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item29

This structure reverses the current top down distribution of information and, if properly implemented, effectively democratizes information. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item30

The Platform would be amenable to use by many populations. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item31

I suggest we start with the retired but plan for use by some portion of 6 billion. I am also thinking that the platform could work for such things as your EaseMen program.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item32

This structure “feels” right to me. That is I have a feeling of satisfaction that all the pieces are in place. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item33

I hope that you can see the synergies in the structure and will be interested enough to help fill any holes in my presentation. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item34

I think you can see why it may not be wise to broadcast the details until after implementation. View comments on this item Add your comment on this item35

This type of feedback system is exactly what Art Brock is working on so I know he will be interested. I would only show him the details after he signed a confidentiality agreement but I would be prepared to offer him a share of the Platform Owner in exchange for the software development.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item36

Still, I am not in any hurry. I'm having a great time. I know that you and I have much more than this to develop and I am open to exploring other options as well as our relationship.View comments on this item Add your comment on this item37
