One of my first theories at the times I achieved higher frame rates was precisely this, the car+track combination. But further testing proved that these didn't make any difference at all.

One of the things I've tried was disabling all effects, pulling all detail sliders to minimum and lowering resolution to 800x600... no effect.

Of course, this is a 20-year old game... so any computer made in the last 7 years or so, even a cheap laptop without a dedicated graphics card, should be able to run it with all effects and details maxed out on 1080p resolution. But I figured maybe this game uses some deprecated DirectX calls that modern graphics cards have trouble rendering (it happens with a few old games), and in these cases turning off effects can help, so I gave this a try anyway. But didn't make any difference.

I might try the forum, thanks for the suggestions.

Adding parts to a car will not affect the handling as long as the parts do not extend 1 small square in Zmodeler in width past the width of the car b4 you add the parts.For example if you made a rectangular box using the correct width and used the carname.cf file from any car,the box would handle the same as the car you used the carname.cf file from.BUT for example if you added a rear bumper to that same box that was 1 small Zmodeler box wider than the car body ( rectangular box in this case ) on each side, the car would handle a tad differently.Also in Zmodeler NEVER have any part or parts of the body lower than the dark horizontal line,or it will drag on the ground intermittently or steady.The shape of the "body" has nothing to do with aerodynamics in the game.The width of the "car" is where it affects a crash or roll over and handling.An example would be by making a narrow car or short car half the width and length and wheelbase of the stock viper ( modifying the cf file for wheelbase and width of front and rear wheel location )the car would handle real funky.

Acording to Viper Racing game manual, things that affect FPS are:
Game effects, sky textures , number of cars during game play, detail level and draw distance.
You said, that those settings were not modified.
Maybe you were using a car with low definition and/or track, resulting in more FPS.
But still, once it happened to me something similar. Maybe it is a "bug" in the game?!
As Val said, try the VRGT forum.

Have you managed to make the wheel work with Viper Racing?
Post your gearbox options and your Options - Controls settings, to see if we can help.

Can you help me, please?
Will there be problems, if the viper.car and vipergt.car 3D car body, be modified from MGI to the 3D from Electronic Arts, as seen in your VipGT22.car?
As long the .cf files do not be modified, the game "behavior" will be exactly as the original release, right?
About the spoiler. The real Viper GTS-R spoiler has front "lip", side "sills", small "wings" on front bumper and of course, the rear "wing", as seen in the Viper Racing game cd cover.
Will there be problems if the spoiler, in the game, be with these 4 parts?
Thank you!

Hi Val,

Thanks for all your attention.

I have to say that I'm now sure it is possible to run the game at higher frame rates, and I actually managed to do it... the problem is that it happened only once, and I don't know what I did to make it happen!

Let me explain. Yesterday, I was testing lots of different addon cars. So every once in a while, I'd have to close Viper Racing, use CarMan to switch car sets, and load it up again.

In one of these times... just once... when I started playing the game, it was running with an uncapped frame rate, at 60+ fps! I did no changes on my computer, or the game settings from previous times. Did several races. Then when it was time to switch car sets again, I exited the game, used CarMan, loaded it up again... and once again, it was running capped at 40 fps.

I haven't managed to make it run with uncapped frame rate again ever since.

Like I said, I made no changes to my computer or the game settings between those sessions. Didn't even reboot. It's really very strange.

I tried lots of different things trying to fix this without results:

- Messing with the in-game resolutions and detail settings to see if there was any combination of resolution and effects that was causing this;
- Messing with dgVoodoo's settings;
- Running in Windows XP and Windows 98 compatibility modes;
- Setting processor affinity to only use 1 CPU core;
- Reinstalling the DX9 complete package;
- Deleting the race.exe file (saw this as a suggested solution for another user here)
- Creating a profile for Viper Racing on my graphics card control panel and making sure Vsync is disabled;
- Disabling all non-essential Windows services;
- Reinstalling the fully patched Viper Racing package.

By the way, the reason I've been using dgVoodoo is because of a very common and widely known issue with old DirectX games running on Windows 8 and later, since Microsoft partially removed support for DirectX 8.1 and earlier versions starting with Windows 8. Without any sort of fix, ALL DX7 and earlier games will usually run with very low and choppy framerates (like 10 - 15 fps), no matter how powerful your computer CPU and graphics card are.

Using dgVoodoo has become the most popular way to fix this issue, and it is also the suggested fix on PCGamingWiki's Viper Racing page. There are other methods, though. However for other games, once this problem is solved either with dgVoodoo or other available solution, typically the framerate is completely unlocked and doesn't remain capped at 40 fps or any other amount.

Since you suggested not using dgVoodoo, I removed it from Viper Racing and tried the two other alternative solutions for this that I know of - one involves using the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit to create a .sdb patch for the affected game, and the other is using a modified ddraw.dll file. I've tried both of these. Unfortunately I got the same results - framerate cap at 40 fps.

It's very strange that this is an issue specific to my machine and not expected behavior, when Viper Racing is the only game affected... especially with such a seemingly arbitrary cap such as 40 fps instead of a value such as 15, 30 or 60 fps (which are often caused by Vsync-related issues).

Maybe this game really just doesn't like my graphics card much, like you suggested. If there's no other ideas, then I'm stumped :(

No idea if Viper Racing has a locked frame rate.
Mine runs at 34.3 FPS when I use the ingame frame rate tester.
Maybe somebody else would be able to answer your question.
If nobody else answers here, try the VRGT forum.
Good luck!

The game is working "fine".

The only problem I have is that the framerate is locked at 40 fps - which is not bad, but not ideal either (especially for racing games).

So I'm troubleshooting a way to unlock the fps - in case it's possible, as many games actually have fps hard caps. So the first thing I need to know, and I'm trying to ask here, is if Viper Racing has a 40 fps cap or people normally get it to run at higher fps.

Other than that, the game seems to be running flawlessly for me.

Sorry if I haven't made that more clear in my previous message.

It's some issue related to your machine or the way you are running the game.The game with my modified patch does not need dgVoodoo to work.It works on 32 and 64 bit windows from win98 thru and including win10.Maybe that's your only problem.I would not use the dgVoodoo thingy and try the shortcut compatibility tab settings one at a time to see if that works.The bad news is that I have heard certain graphics cards will not work 100% with this 1998 game.If you get it working, please let everyone here what you did to get the problem solved.Thanks!

Hi all,

I just got Viper Racing, and I'm having an issue with the framerate. The game is running capped at 40 fps (measured with MSI Afterburner), and I can't find any way to unlock the framerate. Is that how the game's supposed to run? Is Viper Racing locked at 40 fps? PCGamingWiki says it can run at 120+ fps.

I'm using the full updated version 2016 1.2.5 downloaded from vnovak.com without any mods, running through dgVoodoo since I'm on Windows 8.1 x64.

Keep in mind I run lots of different games on this machine, both old and new, many old games with dgVoodoo, and don't have any problems getting 60+ fps on any of them. Vsync is disabled by default on my graphics card control panel, and also disabled on the dgVoodoo profile for this game. I couldn't find any vsync setting on Viper Racing graphics settings.

The game is still lots of fun and very playable at 40 fps, but ofc it would be even better at 60+ fps :) So I'd like to know if this fps lock is normal behavior, or if it's some issue related to my machine.

Could you guys give me a hand? Thanks in advance!

Yes the game works if using keyboard only
The wheel works perfectly with GP3 and 4
The wheel works with GTR heroes.
The wheel will not work for gearbox in Viper as described earlier

I tried the update for Logitech wheel that did not help

Hello Val,
Thank you for your answer. It appears that it is not possible to choose in wish views we want the mirror On/Off.
Thanks to Lapman from Frank P. Wolf, and the compare tool in HxD hexeditor from Mal Hrz, the offset in the race.bin file,
to look for is [line] 0005EA30 and 04 05 [columns].
Possible values for Column 04 - 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 0A, 0B
Most useful values for Column 05 - 74 and 76
Mirror in F1 and F2 views is always On, unless, switching it Off in Options menu.
It is possible to "displace" the mirror with Column 05 with value 74, in combination with values from column 04.
Column 05 with value 76, switches mirror On in views, in combination with values from column 04.
(Thanks to Sucahyo when he modified race.bin 1.2.4 BETA)
Unfortunately, the game does not allow to have random mirror On/Off views, as I wrote before.
I should have guessed that, because if it would be possible, Frank or Sucahyo would have created such program years ago...
P.S.: Lapman mirror modification is not compatible with race.bin 1.2.4 BETA or higher...

If you know how to do it with a hex editor ( I don't )please explain what part of the race.bin you modify and I will look at it and see if I can do something with that info.The best programmers that I know of would be Sucahyo or Frank.You can look up Sucahyo in the VRGT forum.Frank would be in a Viper Racing Yahoo club.You would have to search for his email in Google "Viper Racing Yahoo clubs" or something like that.

Yo Val,
Is there any chance to write a little program to modify the mirror in game?
The idea is, the player set the mirror, in the "F views" at will.
Example: F1 - mirror on, F2 - mirror off, F3 - mirror on...
The program would be like Optman made by Frank P. Wolf, and the mirror function as seen in Lapman.
It would read an offset in the race.bin file, and modify it.
This can be done with an Hex editor, but would be nice to have a little new program, if possible...
Thanks in advance!

Here's an idea - install TS3,go to my channel on Wed 13 June between 4:30 and 5 pm CST and I will answer all the questions you have.It would take way too much space to answer you here and explain what I have to.
You probably know you can have more than one program like Discord on your PC at the same time.
It won't mess up anything.I know a lot about computer stuff.Even if you don't have a microphone right now you can still type in TS3 and I can talk to ya.
Cya then if you can!

Sadly, I just deleted team speak. Discord is a good platform maybe to make the community for VR a lot bigger. I could even plug the channel in the revolt channels.
However, no blender plugin? That’s a big shame! (Blender’s much more powerful.

Which 3D files are there for car besides .mod?

Btw, I’ve seen import/export filters for .mod files, but that’s for devil may cry and such, is that the same format indeed? (Might be worth checking out)

You asked about an import/export filter for Blender , but you failed to ask for what file extension you are talking about.If it's the .mod file that Viper Racing uses , I use zmodeler version 1.07b.You can download it from http://www.gtaplanet.de/downloads/file/gta...eler-1-07b/594.html
 We use Team Speak 3 for a Viper Racing "racefinder".I still host the game 7 days a week and I am in TS3 between 4:30 and 5 pm CST daily.Info on how to find me is on my site with a link to Team Speak 3.
My name in Team Speak 3 is Val.
Cya later!
