In War, There Are No "Do-Overs"

Imagine how the Bush machine would rake Kerry over the coals if he expressed that he had a "secret plan" to fight Al Qaeda or to resolve the occupation of Iraq.... I don't think Democrats are allowed to have secret plans.

Exactly. But the Democratic nominee has to make the point that this election isn't a choice about the future like we had 20 years ago but more greatly resembles the election of 36 years ago (how unsurprising that the Post editors unquestioningly accept Cheney's point of view). As in the 1968 campaign, the challenger must make ending the war the issue. For all I care, he can use the word "winning" for the Post editorialists and their ilk who choose to see the world that way . It is the commitment to withdraw (fully respecting the invadees and their aspirations) that counts. For those who remember, the victor in the 1968 election ran for re-election in 1972 on his "secret plan" to win the Vietnam War.
