I have the same issue - I'm trying to move messages from my laptop to my desktop. I used to put them in a mailbox, move the mailbox, then move the messages to the inbox. Now I get the mailbox does not exist message.

I have only on account, so it is not the expansion issue.

Clayperion -- Do you have multiple accounts, by any chance? I have two accounts, and I find that if I try to drag messages into the "Inbox" while the inbox is collapsed (i.e. the triangle next to it is pointed sideways) I get the same error you describe (i.e., mailbox does not exist). However, if the inbox is expanded (thus showing both of my separate accounts as "sub-inboxes" within the inbox, I can drag the message to either one of them.

pilgrim: Sorry i was late with the advice! Remember, if you're in 10.3 and using a Firewire drive, be careful! There are issues with 10.3 and Firewire drives ...

clayperion: What you may be experiencing is mail trying to apply mail rules to what you're dragging into your IN box, and the rule that's flagging one or more of the emails you're moving is possibly attempting to file the email(s) in a mailbox that no longer exists. That's one possibility anyway. Good luck!

Is anyone having trouble dragging things into their "in" box? After doing a fresh install of panther, and importing all my old mail (into the "Import" folder) I wanted to drag the messages from my old inbox to the new. I keep getting the message "Error. The destination mailbox does not exist." Rebuilding the mailbox has no effect. I noticed that there was no inbox.mbox in my ~/Library/Mail/ directory. Dragging my old inbox.mbox file in and rebuilding still had no effect. Suggestions?

Thanks Robin. Your advice is too late for the 1000+ messages I lost by deleting my old account settings, but it could prove useful in the future. As it is, I've simply set up rules to filter messages from different places (like my pop-accessible webmail account) into separate mailboxes.

Just to clarify my earlier post-- deleting an account in the Preferences-Accounts dialog seems to delete all of the messages for that account that are sitting in the Inbox. But it doesn't seem to affect messages that were filtered into other mailboxes (like a mailing list mailbox I had set up previously).

Hi Pilgrim

Quick note: if you hold down the control key and click on the column headings in mail.app, you'll be able to toggle the display of the 'mailbox' column.

Suggestion: copy your entire mail/ directory from Users/(login name)/Library/ to another drive so you can experiment away without loosing data :O)

stefanseiz has a *really* good point: "I also really don't like mail.app's combining INBOXES for all your accounts."

After installing Panther, I also took the opportunity to switch my POP mail account over to using IMAP (which my host now supports). Anyway, to do this, you can't just change an old POP account (even though all the other settings are the same). You have to create a new IMPA account, then delete the old POP account. But if you delete a mail account in Mail.app, it deletes all of the mail in the In box that is associated with that account. (How do you know which messages in your Inbox are associated with that account, and which are from some other account? Well, unless you've developed some clever marking scheme, you don't.) This is the craziest and least intuitive behavior I have encountered in Mail.app. Why should deleting info about an account (which would generally signify, for example, simply that I no longer want to use this email account) result in all of the messages for the account (that haven't already been put in other folders) being destroyed?

So the moral is: Don't delete an account you've created until you've made sure you've backed up the Inbox somehow, or otherwise made sure you can live without anything that's in it.

Also, a question: Anyone have any idea how to go about trying to recover a deleted Inbox? The POP account's folder (and the inbox.mbox file within it), inside Library/Mail/ simply disappeared (not simply put in the trash, but apparently deleted). I'm assuming I've just lost 10+ megs of mail for good, but if anyone has ideas, I'm open to them.

there are lots of issues with mail.app on 10.2 and, ahem, some remain with 10.3 (but we wouldn't know about this before the 24th).

anyway, here's somewhere where a list is being compiled. soon to be updated after the 10.3 release it says.

I'd love to use mail.app too, but there's one simmple feature which is missing and preventing me from using mail.app:

Having the possibility to assign a certain signature to a certain accounts. I (like almost everyone) am dealing with multiple email accounts and don't really want to waste my time by manualy selecting a signature on every single outgoing message.

What i also miss, compared to entourage, is the possibility to Auto-SYNCH (check) certain folders (i use IMAP) with my server. Currently mail.app either only synchs your INBOX or all folders which is realy bad if you're on the road. Entourage handles this very nicely with it's schedule setup. I also really don't like mail.app's combining INBOXES for all your accounts. I rather want my Accounts various inboxes be displayed seperatels - IMHO this should be a configurable OPTION and mail.app shouldn't force the combined inboxes on you.

Nuff whining.

Nope, not Panther. By threaded I meant the message colouring that happens, not actual nested threading.

hmm.. I just noticed you mentioned threaded mail, you must be using Panther, since Jaguar doesn't have threaded mail. I haven't tried Panther yet, there may be new features I'm not aware of. I'll look into it again once the Retail version of 10.3 gets into my hands. I'm an early adopter but I refuse to run betas.
