A prayer before meals developed over the decades
I do not know when I will update my collection of [Prayers before Meals](https://purl.org/net/tbc/mealpryr.htm), but here is the basis for variation I use for private grace. I pray blessings on chefs, cooks, and servers when my food comes from restaurants. It is not appropriate in many group settings, but it can be adapted. You can adapt it to bless the cooks in a family or friends and family setting, for example. Instead of praying blessings on those who process ingredients, consider foods we eat relatively unprocessed, such as oranges. Extend the prayer to bless those who cultivated the orange, those who picked it, washed it, packed it, shipped it, and stocked it on the grocery shelf. And I would take this opportunity also to recommend [Overeaters Anonymous](https://oa.org/) for those who struggle with a healthy relationship with food.

Father, thank you for this food.
Bless __ for preparing it and for serving it to me.
Bless all who processed the ingredients.
Bless this food to my use and me to Your service.
Make me mindful of the needs of others.
Deliver me from the temptation of gluttony.
Heal me of obesity.
Amen.

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I left my hot rod in the street,
If it drives before I wake,
I pray the Lord put on the brake!

Now I lay me down to rest,
I pray I pass tomorrow’s test,
If I die before I wake,
That’s one lest test I’ll have to take.

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
If I die before I wake,
You’ll know I had a tummy ache.

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
Bless this bed I lay upon,
Four corners ‘round my bed,
Four angles ‘round my head,
One to watch, one to pray,
Two to keep all harm away.

Nothing comes to mind but I could give it some thought. When is the luncheon?

I'm looking for a simple grace to say before the luncheon at my brother's funeral. I want to say something of remembrance to him as well as bless our meal. Any suggestions?

Hi, My Mum used to say this version of a prayer to me every night and also to my children

As I lay me down to sleep
I pray Lord Jesus my Soul to keep
May four angels guard my bed
Two at the foot and two at the head,

Mathew, Mark Luke and John,
Bless the bed that I lay on,
In the morning when I wake,
please Lord Jesus keep me safe

When I was younger me and my brother made our own pray by mashing up of both our favorite prays and our own words. I still say it every night before bed.

"There are four corners on my bed,
There are four angels on each end.
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,
Bless this bed that I lay on.
One to watch me and one to pray,
Two to take my soul away.
Now if I shall die before I wake,
I pray the Lord, my soul to take.
See me safely threw the night,
My angels shall wake me at morning light.
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
Bless this bed that I lay on.
For now my dear the day is over,
But before I sleep my slumber,
I come to say,
Goodnight sweet Jesus, goodnight!"

"Father, we thank thee for the night,
And for the pleasant morning light.
For rest and food and loving care,
And all that makes the day so fair.
Help us to do the thing we should,
To be to others kind and good,
In all we do, in all we say,
To grow more loving every day."

As a child my three sibling and I would sing this song while mom played the piano to the tune of "Sun of my Soul". We would then have a quick read of the day's morning watch, prior to our breakfast. Lovely memories. The only difference in the wording I recall is we sang, "...and for the BLESSED morning light", which I prefer...acknowledging our Lord as the Creator of every blessing and of each new day.

I have been trying to find this prayer that my grandfather recited before all our Sunday dinners. The only part I remember clearly was @ the end: ..."we beseech thee, thou provide our souls with everlasting life. Amen." I would give anything to find this blessing. vaasbell@yahoo.com

Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray to God my soul to take.
There are 4 corners 'round my bed,
And 4 angels 'round me spread.
Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
God, bless this bed that I lay on.
God bless Mummy and Daddy, my brothers and sisters,
And everybody I know and love, AMEN.

A chance Spoonerism at the table one evening turned into a tradition.

"Bless, O Lord, this food to our use
and ourselves to your service
and keep us always mindful of the needs of others
--and needful of the minds of others.
Amen."
