I find it odd that I first learned of flashmobs on boingboing, where they were praised until "cool" people and "media" got involved, at which point a 180 was made.

Ok, for your verbal logical needs, milovoo:

...apparently "self-centred, selfish, boring, internet 'hipsters' who think that are striking out as individuals by participating in an event where they act as sheep flocking to new grass".

Satisfied?

No, the really sad and boring thing is people who feel the need to criticize others for it.

Does it not feel a bit odd to you to say " apparently self-centred, selfish, boring, internet 'hipsters'", and then claim they are merely mindless followers?

Um, kickstart, it's a joke. No one's actually gathering to clean someone's place.

I think they should combine flash mobs with the Mobile phone throwing contest recently held in the Ukraine. A large number of people could show up in a public place, seemingly at random, and hurl their mobile phones as far as they could...

IIRC, members of the SF cacophony society did a prank many years ago where they descended on some unexpecting location (I want to say it was someplace in the Union Square area) dressed in french maid outfits and set about dusting the place. I would say that this was not only the first flashmob (or at least well pre-dating the current craze) but that it was also far superior in concept to anything I've seen so far from the flashmob fad.

It was before my time though, so I'm not 100% certain. Anyone remember the details?

See, that's the problem, __x. This isn't meaningless. Flashmobs, are one thing, because nothing is accomplished except for the event itself. 'Flashmops' actually does something, so it's not meaningless. I'm just suggesting that instead of someone's house, a park could be done better.

The really sad thing is that I'm avoiding bringing up the fact that the people involved are apparently self-centred, selfish, boring, internet 'hipsters' who think that are striking out as individuals by participating in an event where they act as sheep flocking to new grass.

My own desire to see the world improve a little makes me wish that the average person wasn't any part of the above sheeple mentality. Not much I can do about it except to refuse to participate and to suggest other options.

Kickstart that is the whole point, it is only fun if it is meaningless. A variation of gold fish swallowing, wearing coon-skin hats, beaver pelt coats, and saddle shoes.

FlashGramps- where a bunch of grumpy old people get together, soil themselves, and complain....wait we already have those...retirement homes.

Flashsobs: Group therapy for people who can't stop mobbing.

Flashsots: You swarm a pass-out street inebriate and give him a good scrubbing, then retire to a safe distance to watch him come to, wondering where he got the spiffy clean suit and stylish haircut.

How about people focus on parks instead...you know, clean up the needles and garbage and toxic substances that are in just about every park in North America and Europe. Maybe make it so that kids can safely use them.

Or is civic duty uncool? Err, sorry, 'un-hipster'.

That is so sexist, Xeni. Flashtubes for the guys at least. And Flashlubes if they all get together... okay, stopping now.

Well, I just typed "flash mob" into my handy Trend-O-Matic-2000X and it came up with some other suggestions for people looking to be both cool _and_ different:

Flashbobs -- 1000 people converge to give someone a haircut
Flashsods -- ...turn a patch of dirt into lawn (what fun!)
Flashbods -- mass nudity is sooo spring 2003
Flashmmogs -- 10,000 people converge and crash an EQ server
Flashdobbs -- the subgenius revenge
Flashhobbs -- confuse the hell out of Calvin
Slashmobs -- might end the phonemena real fast
Hashmobs -- dude
Ashmobs -- dude! don't waste it

Sh_t. I think I broke my Trend-O-Matic. D_uble sh_t. I think this has been done before. I am so lame.
