If you get seriously into Python on OS X you will need to check out the PyObjC package, which is a bridge between Python and the Objective-C Cocoa APIs and frameworks. Very tasty, and a nice way to whip up some interesting tools on the Mac.

Just be aware that 2.3 is still in beta, so 2.2 is a good choice unless you *must* have the latest and possibly greatest.

I love Python. The lack of cruft, the ease of writing and *reading* the code. Almost every syntactic thing I hate about other languages is fixed in Python. I'm just waiting for a project that's gives me a way to get paid to learn it!

Check out PythonCard if you want to get really excited about Python as a programming tool. Kevin Altis and a small band of devotees (yours truly included as Chief Scribe and Tablet Keeper) are bent on re-creating HyperCard on steroids cross-platform with Python as the native tongue.
