Here's a fun way to remember names of participants.
Have each person introduce himself with a positive attribute that starts with the same letter of one's first name. For example, I'm Generous Gloria. The next person repeats the previous name(s)and then introduces himself. If you have 20 people, the last person will have to repeat everyone's name and attribute before giving his. Of course, name tags are easier, but this is a great mnemonic device. It also tells how people view themselves.
I've used this with non-native speakers, so it also builds vocabulary:
