The lion kill down at the park is basically gone now that the bear cleaned up last night. Not a young deer, as the teeth were quite worn (I found the palate).

HOWEVER, it is important to note that a lion did return to the kill Monday night, although there wasn't much left but skin, brains, and rumen. Within 20 minutes of setting up the game camera, one cat returned to eat. THANKS, BURT for watchin' my back, cuz those cats were close by!!

Yes, I said catS.
The first cat was joined by at least one other cat, and they bedded down on the kill after for a few hours. This was just a few feet off Cemetery Road.

Take care, OK?

Long shot department: I have a sweet black kitty who is looking for a new home. She needs a home with someone who is home more often and who just wants a sweet kitty to love on. She is 13 yo, so not a super long-term commitment. She's really sweet, spayed and comes with all her vaccinations. We have a workhorse of a generator for sale. A Honda EX4500.
We have owned it for a while but it has only been used during
a few extended power outages. It powers our whole house
during an outage. It has lived it's entire life in our garage,
protected from the elements. It has an electric starter to start
it up with the turn of a key. See the full specs in the Honda
manual (link below).

This model is no longer sold so I’m honestly not sure what to ask.
But for a local buyer, the asking price is MUCH LESS than the apparent
national price of $3,462 or Colorado price of $2,076. (See the
Statricks link below.) There is one on Ebay for $2,000 (see link below).

We are asking $650 OBO. If it doesn't sell locally it's going on Craig's list for
much more.

It hasn't been used for a while but it started right up this afternoon and
is running smoothly. I use Truegas in it which is expensive (about $35/gallon)
but is the most reliable I've found. I would recommend using Truegas if
you're only going to use this for power backup during outages.

Why are we selling this gem of a generator? We want something lighter and
more maneuverable so Nancy can handle it if I'm not around.  You'll need a
pickup and at least two strong people to lift and move it. It weighs 270 lbs.

Call me 3O3 44 four 8I40.

Corded phones are a good idea no matter what. We have one and depend on it when electricity is out and our portable phones don't work.

But there have been many, many times when ALL phone service has been out, including our corded phone. Facing an eventual second hip replacement, and our nearest neighbor down our steep driveway, around the bend, and then up another steep driveway, I have personally felt vulnerable—especially if I’m home alone. And I know there are other folks in town who are in a similar situation.

If you have mobility or other physical challenges, you can’t depend on a corded phone if all phone service is out.

Get one of those old corded phones and plug it into the phone jack when power and internet are out. The phone lines have their own power source and work as long as the wire is not damaged. You can find them cheap at Thrift Stores.

Emergency communications Walkie-Talkie sets are available:

If you have mobility challenges (or other physical issues) and feel particularly vulnerable if the electricity goes out (like last night, for hours!) and/or phones and Internet go out, there are Walkie-Talkie sets available. The sets are free of charge to you, and will come with easy-to-understand instructions on how to use them and how to keep them charged.

To reserve your sets or if you have questions, please contact me at 3o3 444 8-1-4-0. We have only 10 pairs available so first come, first served. (Note: These are not just for seniors, but for anyone who may be in need.)

The Walkie-Talkies were purchased under a community resilience grant from Foothills United Way for emergency communications. They’ve been tested and have great range—they work all around town.

I had to chuckle. Nancy and Steve's notes. Opposite ends of town and the technology spectrum. I had no internet this morning and none of the usual tricks helped re-set it which now makes sense. It came back a little before noon for me. When it did I had to go through re-initializing the wireless router as though I had just taken it out of the box. I say that so people are aware that the internet may come back but the whole process may take a few "in-house" steps as well.

For those who like to walk around Elysian Park at the East end - one of my dogs found a fresh deer carcass this morning down below Cemetery Road at the far end. I think that's why the coyote was hanging around yesterday. Anyway, if you're walking dogs down there, just be aware that the carcass is there and they're going to want to get into it. I don't know if any beast is watching/guarding it, but it's there!

About 1/4 of the people in town have lost internet due to the power outage which took down a control board in CenturyLink's equipment. I've been told service will be restored by 6 pm. Unfortunately, the people who would like this information won't see it until their service is restored.

Nate & Whitney,
I went through the same thing with a Husky saw. Did all the typical stuff at least twice and what solved it was a new carburetor. It would start, but if it died or I stopped it I could not get it to restart. Good luck!

When there are "flash power blips", please call the problem into Xcel. I called it in last evening and the service rep I spoke with didn't know anything about it. She sent a crew to check it out. About an hour and a half later, I received a robo call that the problem would be resolved by 10:15.
It has been my experience that "power blips" are usually followed by a longer power outage.
The more people calling Xcel about the problem, the more likely a crew will be sent to check it out. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

My guess is it was a tree limb bumping the power line due to the snow. Just a guess.

Hi, neighbors!

Sooo... time for me to admit an embarrassing truth. I had maybe 1/4 or 1/3 left of my hardwood from last winter, and allowed that give me false security... Tried to order more, and (of course, it's so late) won't be able to get a delivery of the good hardwood ends until spring. I have a decent amount of ponderosa already split and stacked, but I'd love to get my hands on some more hardwood.

Does anyone have so much abundance that you'd be willing to sell me some amount from your own personal stash?
Ideally I'd love to purchase a half cord of hardwood, but beggars can't be choosers.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I can most easily be reached by email -

Level 1 fire restrictions rescinded for western Boulder County
Lower temperatures and additional moisture have decreased fire danger
Boulder County, Colo. - On Tuesday, October 9, 2018, just before 12:00 p.m., Sheriff Joe Pelle rescinded the Level 1 Fire Restrictions that were in place for western Boulder County. Lower temperatures and additional moisture has decreased the wildfire danger to our community.
Residents are reminded that although the fire restrictions have been rescinded, there are still permit requirements in place for slash burning and broadcast burns, also known as prescribed fires. Permits are available online at: www.bouldercounty.org/safety/fire/pages/openburnpermit.aspx or at the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, located at 5600 Flatiron Parkway, Boulder or the Sheriff’s Office Fire Cache, located at 3116 Longhorn Road, Boulder. Agricultural burns and campfires are now allowed and do not require a permit.
For current fire and shooting restrictions for United States Forest Service properties, please visit the following website: www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/arp/alerts-notices. For current fire restrictions in Eldorado Canyon State Park, please visit the following website: http://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/Parks/eldoradocanyon.

Heads up for the community...there is a guy that's been hanging around the Bar-K for the last couple of days, in his silver Subaru wagon. Barb Petruzzi and I had an encounter with him yesterday, when I went to see why he was parked overnight alongside my property. He gave us a couple of different stories that didn't ring true, then he ran away when deputies showed up. This morning he was parked in the driveway of neighbors on Rock Lake Rd. The guy is white, small frame, short, graying hair and short beard. This is his car.

Hi Everyone- I am looking to find a home for a Main Coon mix grey tabby. He came to us from a co-worker who couldn't keep him but he and my other two cats are fighting all the time and it isn't getting better. Walter McGriddle is about 4-5 years old, outside/inside athletic hunter who likes to find a nice lap in the evenings to cuddle on. He is pretty chatty and would do well as an only cat. Let me know if you can take him in- up to date on his shots and vet visits. Email or call burnham.jennifer@yahoo.com or 303-443-0334 after 6:00 pm.

Yeah, there's been recent lion activity on this end too.
Deer are frequenting the yard, I figure one morning there will be a carcass I can put my cam on :)
Lefty, a group of coyotes was doing a bit of singing near your area this summer.
Lotsa coyote scat above Ward St., and I kicked one up on Cemetery road.
Occasionally I've seen them in town when I leave for work absurdly early. Seems like they keep a low profile, though.

The Glory of Otis, Fattest of the Fat Bears

Recently, I've been standing outside at night and listening to fruit tree branches breaking around Town from our arboreal bear feeding frenzy. With such an abundant crop of fruit and mast this year, albeit not ideal in Town, our bears will be going to bed fat & happy. THIS bear, however, is the King! Highly enjoyable article. Rock on,Otis!!! :-)

This is a note for all of Lady's friends and family.

After an initial remote consult with Lisa we spent a good part of today at two different Animal hospitals. Lady has a large abdominal mass/tumor. Circumstances suggest it is likely benign but no guarantees but must be removed. It is a splenic tumor that carries a risk of rupturing. It is not a small surgery and carries risks. She is currently scheduled for a surgical consult and surgery on Tuesday.

I'm writing this so that anyone who would like to see her in the next few days is aware and welcome to come by our house, 67 Main, and give her good wishes. I'll also try to get her up to the Town Square perhaps for burger night,

Burt

Lefty - the bit I know is that they will resume work on Monday and spend a few days on the area in front of our house (Ivydell) & driveway and they’ll add another layer of material to the road. I was told three days for that and then they’ll remove the temp bridge and re-route traffic to the new bridge.

Anyone using a Netgear router ? I got an email from what appears to be Netgear Security concerning a firmware security update with a convenient link to click on for a download of the latest firmware version and it wants me to add the reply link to my address book, no way!

Don't click on email links. I went to my router app and checked for updates from there, no new updates, my router is up to date.

The email doesn't have an unsubscribe option. It has a reply option thats weird for an automated email.

Burt, I use CounterAttack in the field. "Use" meaning I've never needed to deploy it since I haven't been charged (yet). I was issued the same brand by CPW when baiting lion/bobcat live-traps so the stuff must be legit. I once had a bit of an oopsie in my car, which caused some hikers 50ft away to cough violently and assume there was a fire nearby. The stuff is painful, and not to be used as a bear deterrent or punishment. Oh, and Murdoch's has practice cans which are pretty nifty. I carry a tiny can for creepy people I might smack into while trail running, but I'll probably just whip out the lady rage and freak them out.

There's a bit of conflict of interest here with the Boulder County Sustainability Office offering of a discount tree "residents can reduce energy consumption by up to 20% by shading their homes!"

Doesn't fit into the whole fire mitigation plan and quite possibly raise your insurance rates by 20% or worse, cancelled.

I am looking for a room to rent for this fall and in to next year in our town. I am currently working as an online professor for two universities back east, and part time at both CalWood in Jamestown and the St. Vrain Market in Lyons. I have excellent references, am very clean and quiet, looking for a sweet charming space to work/live in with internet. I am a former resident of Jamestown from 2011-2017 and have local references as well. I am available also to teach music and was the originator of the Wild Mt. Kids in Jamestown. Would love to work with our sweet kiddos again and rejoin as a citizen of our beloved town. If you have a room to rent, and would consider me as a tenant, please contact me at 301-676-7263 (cell) or email at lynda.bell@colorado.edu.

all my best,
Lynda

On the topic of loose dogs, I almost hit a sweet local dog this morning in front of the Merc. Traffic was heavy and very slow, but the dog walked out from behind a car coming down the hill, surprising me as it ran right between the large truck in front of me and my car as I was going up the hill. I was going very, very slow and had to break hard, sending Merf crashing onto the floor in the back. The owner was nowhere in sight. When I came back through town a bit later the same dog was still roaming amongst the morning traffic alone.

It would have devastated me if I had hurt this sweet dog. Please, please keep our furry loved ones close by and supervised at all times.

Sigh, this is a tough one, but as a person who used to pick up dead and injured hit-by-car dogs for a living, and still remembers them like it was yesterday, I gotta say we all knew it was going to happen, and it will happen again if there isn't some sort of shift. I have witnessed SO MANY close calls in the past few weeks, but even with speed bumps, dogs roaming the street is still an issue. The owners are often socializing and inattentive or deflect the issue with excuses and comedy. It's impossible to not notice the faces of horrified Merc patrons and perplexed drivers when no one fetches the dog in traffic. I have never seen an adult (sober) human standing around waiting to greet bumpers as they pass by, why is it OK for our beloved community dogs to do so? Every day I watch, and hope one day for a shift. God forbid someone mentions a leash, but it is often a symbol of love, not loss of freedom.

*Disclaimer: this post was not reviewed and edited for lovingkindness, despite much concern for the wellbeing of Merl, Kurt, Cain, and the dogs of JT.

Dangit, why do I miss all the bears? It's like they KNOW to steer clear of me...

LIONS. We have 'em, they're eating the creatures that live amongst us, and they're being showcased at another presentation at CU this week. I can't imagine Mat will do this again soon, so...

IF YOU MISSED IT THE FIRST TIME:

Mat Alldredge, PhD researcher with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, has completed a long-term study of our local mountain lion population. Mat will be re-presenting his Mountain Lion Study on the CU campus Thursday. Mat is a great presenter, and this is an entertaining and very educational talk.

The loose dogs and others in the Merc zone present a unique and perennial hazard to emergency response. In talking with Tara post flood, Lefthand has agreed to respond through that zone at 15, and we remind our operators of that practice. Typically we don't run sirens because of the plugged ears and dirty looks, and we ask that folks respect the emergency lights by corralling loose pedestrians, cyclists and dogs. We slow through the zone so we don't hit anyone/thing, but it is the only thoroughfare through town, and is a public roadway. Please help everyone.

I'd like to clarify that I am not Dave L, I don't go by Dave though some folks default to that given name for me regardless. I'm assuming someone else with the same first and last initial has moved to town?

I'm not opposed to leash laws for children, just the timing of the sentiment.

Can I just say that I am very glad Merle is okay. However in addition to speed bumps, maybe people shouldn't let their dogs or children wander the street. It's not acceptable anywhere else why should it be acceptable here? It is not a cul-de-sac.

The driver that was involved is Max's college friend Cain. He has never been to Colorado and at the time he passed through town he had been on the road for over 12 hours coming to Bar-K to visit Max from Indiana on his way home to LA. He arrived here feeling bad about what happened. His account was he didn't notice Merle's presence lying in the middle of the road since he had his brights on and was focusing ahead where he thought he had seen people crossing the road. He didn't think he was driving excessively fast. I'm glad Merle's came through relatively unharmed. I will pass the news on to Max's friend.

Last night at the Merc, i watched for hours as many unsupervised dogs romped casually in the middle of the road.
Cars were going by SO FAST, since we have no more speed bumps, and Merle got hit, hard, and then he bolted and disappeared. Maybe by now they've found him, and i pray that he lived, but the point is that it's NOT SAFE for dogs to be loose and running with the traffic being this fast through town. Not safe for kids either.
We need speed controls and we need them soon, or this terrible combination of loose and clueless dogs and speeding drivers is just going to keep happening.
I feel so sad for Merle and for Kurt.
Please can we avoid this in the future people??

Hello people! Now that our canyon pavement is almost back to normal, do we need to review the rules of the road? I had a near head on collision today with a car (black, Jeep like) that was passing a truck on a blind corner double yellow. I was too busy hitting the brakes to get a better description.

Yeah it’s nice to be able to take the corners at full speed. But please let’s honor the double yellow. This goes for bikes too.

I hope this was not a local.

We ate dinner at The Greenbriar and it was fabulous! Went back for a Sunday brunch and it was pretty awful. My son spit out the oyster; said it was bad. The rest of the food was uninspired and kept running out and you would have to wait and wait for fresh food. We complained to the manager and he could not have cared less.

J.T. and All,

Another viable option for controlling fruit production, other than cutting down the tree/shrub, is the application of a plant growth regulator such as ethephon. Mechanism of action is that it is converted to ethylene in the plant and causes early abcission of fruit, before it sets. Folks can enjoy the blossoms in the spring and then the blossoms will drop with no subsequent fruit production

Important note, according to Penn State it is non toxic to honey bees...
