While I'm sure the AP reporter had no way of knowing, Manuel Nunes (1843-1922) was not the first master ukulele maker -- he was among the first. Augusto Dias (1842-1915) was actually the first ukulele maker of which documentary evidence can be found, in 1884; both he and Nunes advertised their instruments in Honolulu the following year, in 1885. Jose do Espirito Santo (1850-1905) was possibly in business by 1886 and certainly by 1887. Nunes, Dias, and Santo all deserve credit for being the first master makers.
