There will be two Bar K-ers playing with the Family Dog String Band tonight at the Merc. In case you get a wild hare, Dave Pullins (mandolin) and I (fiddle) will be playing some tunes from 8-10 tonight. I heard the pork dinner is going to be fantastic, and Karen D's pies are always top notch!

Thank you Bar K neighbors for your support regarding my concern with construction workers and their smoking. My post was meant to express my observation and concern and nothing more. Considering we all have chosen to live in this amazingly beautiful, yet somewhat dangerous area, we should all look out for one another by being diligent and respectful of our environment (and one another), whether it be properly putting out our trash to keep the bears away, or not throwing cigarette butts in the weeds, or not personally judging someone you have not even met. Personally I enjoy driving down James Canyon rather than the alternative routes because I like watching the amazing progress these hard working construction crews are achieving. I enjoy being stopped so I can roll down my windows and bask in the fresh air and sound of the river. I am retired so my time is my own and giving up 8 minutes at a flag stop is trivial in the grand scheme of things, which if you look beyond the 8 minutes at the flag stop, one will realize that soon we will have a wonderful new road build just for us! And please, be respectful of each other and our environment and we will all live happily and safely in these beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Anyone know where the smoke is coming from this morning? I know that there are fires everywhere but that golden light, the smell of smoke and small planes overhead is a bit scary...

The construction has been going on a while especially for those of us here since the flood, but I am grateful that we will soon have a new road and bridges that might make it through our next flood.

Kim, I had the same concern about the fire danger but the ban allows smoking “in an area that is cleared of all combustible material.” Mostly the workers are standing on dirt or now, pavement, so it’s legal.

Allison, that sounds a bit harsh to me. I think that most folks are like me and smile and wave at our hardworking road crew and that the friendliness has been reciprocated. Having lived through five decades of Boulder County wildfires, I understand the concerns about fire danger (and other dangers.)

Once recently, a flagger spaced out and sent my student driver straight toward an oncoming car. Thankfully, said driver had the sense to disregard the flagged and pull over safely. The flagger was kind and apologetic. After the flood, a worker with a wife and children was killed by a backing construction truck. This time, so far, everyone has been safe, drivers and workers. I am grateful for that and look forward to our smooth new road.

Sorry! That last post was meant to be from ME, not JAM!

I appreciate the proactive post from Allison and offer this suggestion: Altoid tins (and other small tins like it) make great portable, covered ash trays that fit inside of pockets easily. Perhaps we can collect some and hand them out when we're passing by?

It's true that this should not be tolerated and I would have approached them in the moment, as well as informed Andrew Barth and the company doing the work.

I personally think we have been very patient with the months of
    construction.

We are in a Level 2 fire ban and it is illegal to smoke outside a building or vehicle at this level.

I do not find it "sniveling" to require the workers to follow the law which are the same restrictions we have to follow.

Nancy G - sounds like you are upset with: 1) the amount of time you spent waiting in line, 2) potential adverse affects of smoking on the lungs of KTI employees, 3) potential for a butt to start a fire (legit), and 4) disrespecting mother earth (legit). I can assure you that those items were probably not on the minds of the flaggers who have been working their tails off for the past few months trying to get our road completed. Show a little grace, patience, and leadership by thanking the workers for a job well done, and offering to collect their butts in a fire-proof receptacle. They're going to leave this job thinking people who live up here are a bunch of snivelers.

Yesterday while stopped for 8 minutes for the construction just below Jamestown, I was shocked to witness (I was car #! in line) 3 flaggers who smoked 7 cigarettes in 8 minutes then proceeded to fling the still burning butts onto the side of the road! I almost said something, and later wish I had because they showed a total lack of respect not only for our earth but for our high wildfire danger area....which they are working in daily!!
I am thinking of calling Kelley Construction and complaining...

News from the Spring Creek Fire... The houses that have a good chance of being saved do not have trees touching them or wall to wall trees leading up to them. YOU HAVE TO MITIGATE in order to save this neighborhood from total destruction and if we all pitch in and take care of the land, we will decrease the temp of the fire going through and it will not sterilize the ground.
There is a great program available for those interested, so please contact the fire dept or Wildfire Partners.
There will be more information posted on this program as soon as the details are finalized.

Total moisture yesterday: 2.24" (surprisingly close to Sal's gage report - hailstones must have remained fairly small throughout). In case you are wondering, Bastille Day 2013 dropped 2.42" on us, perhaps as a warm-up act for what happened two months later (this is NOT a prediction for this year). July 12th, 2018, received the 2nd most precipitation in one day in July in three decades. The forecast for next week is 'monsoonal', so we will add more moisture to this. Monsoonal humidities (>20%) also translate into much reduced (crown-)fire danger, so we are probably over the pre-monsoonal fire danger 'hump'. As Jeff said, hooray!

Since the hailstorm I have noticed a significant decline in the hummingbirds. Before the storm they were going nuts at the 4 feeders we have. It was fun to watch the crowded airspace. There were calliopes, broadtails and rufus. Now mostly rufus. Hoping the others will return and have not been mortally injured by the hail. The gardens took a beating too. But we did need the moisture for sure.

Stop by 62 Bridger Trail to look at FREE things, including throw pillows, garage towels, assorted kitchen utensils...and a comfortable couch that just needs to be cleaned!

We will put these items on the driveway, some in boxes (take the boxes too!) until Friday, when they will go to the Nederland dump. Save our earth and give these items a new home please!! Help yourself!! Take whatever you want!!

Thanks for helping us clean out and unpack!

Forecast for hot temperatures and dry conditions has increased fire danger
Boulder County, Colo. - Sheriff Joe Pelle is enacting Level 2 Fire Restrictions, effective immediately, Monday, July 9, for western Boulder County. The fire restrictions are being implemented due to increasing fire danger, lack of moisture and the forecast for hot temperatures. We also have seen an increase in recreational activities in western Boulder County during the summer months. In addition, local and regional fire suppression resources have also been committed to large fires in Colorado and across the nation.

The fire restrictions include the mountain areas of Boulder County. The mountain areas include any and all unincorporated areas of the county:

    West of CO Highway 93 (CO-93), from its intersection with the southern boundary of Boulder County until, and including, its intersection with CO Highway 119 (CO-119);
    West of Broadway Avenue in the City of Boulder, from its intersection with CO-119 until, and including, its intersection with US Highway 36 (US-36);
    West of US-36, from its intersection with Broadway Avenue until its intersection with the northern boundary of Boulder County;
    West of the western boundary of the Rabbit Mountain Open Space until, and including, US-36; and;
All of the Rabbit Mountain Open Space property.
A map depicting the areas of Boulder County affected by the fire ban is included below.

    The fire ban PROHIBITS:

Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire on private and public lands. This includes charcoal grills and barbecues, coal and wood burning stoves and sheepherder’s stoves and includes use in developed camping and picnic grounds.
Fireworks sales, use, and possession, including permissible fireworks.
Shooting or discharge of firearms for recreational purposes.
Smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.
Operating a chainsaw without a USDA or SAE approved spark arrester properly installed and in effective working order, a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher kept with the operator and one round point shovel with an overall length of at least 35 inches readily available for use.
Using an explosive. This includes but is not limited to fuses or blasting caps, fireworks, rockets, exploding targets, and tracers or incendiary ammunition.
Welding or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame outdoors.
Possessing or using a motor vehicle off established roads, motorized trails or established parking areas, except when parking in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the vehicle.
    The fire ban ALLOWS:

Smoking in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.
Devices using pressurized liquid or gas (stoves, grills or lanterns) that include shut-off valves are permitted when used in an area at least three feet or more from flammable material such as grasses or pine needles.
Shooting or discharge of firearms for hunting, with a valid and current hunting license on public lands.
Operating a chainsaw with a USDA or SAE approved spark arrester properly installed and in effective working order, a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher kept with the operator and one round point shovel with an overall length of at least 35 inches readily available for use.
For current fire, shooting and developed recreation site restrictions and seasonal closures for USFS properties, visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/arp/home/?cid=FSEPRD583820.

Anyone found in violation of the fire ban may be convicted of a class two petty offense, and may be subject to up to a $1,000 fine, in addition to any possible civil penalties. Higher fines may be imposed for subsequent offenses.

The fire restrictions do not affect open fires within incorporated cities and towns; however, residents and visitors must comply with applicable ordinances and regulations in their respective cities and towns. The fire restrictions will be in effect until Sheriff Pelle finds that the hazardous conditions have subsided.

Colorado state statutes authorize counties to impose fire restrictions "to a degree and in a manner that the Board of County Commissioners deems necessary to reduce the danger of wildfires within those portions of the unincorporated areas of the county where the danger of forest or grass fires is found to be high based on competent evidence."

Lee Hill Drive weekday closures start Monday for culvert project - Closures in place 24-7 from Monday morning through Thursday evening every week

Boulder County Transportation will begin a reconstruction project to replace a large culvert on Lee Hill Drive starting Monday, July 9. The project will require weekday closures of Lee Hill Drive from Monday, July 9 through Thursday, Aug. 16, weather permitting. Construction will continue through September, but the full-roadway closure will not be necessary the entire time.

Closure of Lee Hill Drive at Six Mile Creek This Summer

Phase I of this project will involve replacement of a failing culvert at Six Mile Creek, which is located near 3250 Lee Hill Drive, approximately halfway between Olde Stage Road and Deer Trail Drive. Lee Hill Drive will be closed to all traffic at Six Mile Creek, 24-hours a day in both directions, from 7 a.m. on Mondays through 6 p.m. on Thursdays, until we can maintain a safe travel lane. From 6 p.m. on Thursdays through 7 a.m. on Mondays, a traffic signal will be used as Lee Hill Drive will be reduced to a single lane of travel.
Emergency responders have been notified of the work and and contingency plans have been put in place to ensure they can get through the work zone at all times to assist with emergencies.

Residents living west of the closure location, which includes the Boulder Heights subdivision, will be detoured to Lefthand Canyon Drive. Residents living east of the closure area can use Lee Hill Drive to access their property. The closure will be in effect for all travelers (motor vehicles and cyclists).

Construction will continue later this year, as a county contractor will be installing concrete curb and gutter approximately 1,500 feet up Lee Hill Drive from Olde Stage Road. Lane closures are anticipated during this work with single lane of traffic controlled by a traffic signal on nights and weekends.

The entire stretch of Lee Hill Drive from Olde Stage Road to Deer Trail Road, along with the entirety of Deer Trail will be repaved in 2019 and all guardrail will be replaced. More details will be provided prior to construction.

For more information on this project, visit www.LeeHillDrive.com or contact Boulder County Transportation at 303-441-3900. All current Boulder County Transportation road project information is available at www.BoCoConeZones.com.

    NOTE: POLITICAL CONTENT
Voters in Congressional House District 2 have a unique opportunity to send a message to congress and our nation. It's time to confront the problematic two-party system and send a real advocate to Washington, one who is unburdened by party ideology. NICK THOMAS is running as an independent and needs more voter signatures to get on the ballot. His positions are very close to that of Mark Williams. And, unlike corporate lawyer Joe Neguse, Nick is not beholden to either special interests or Democratic Party bigwigs. Unlike Peter Yu, Nick is not tethered to a Republican Party led by Donald Trump. Check Nick out at nickthomasforcongress.com. The deadline for signature petitions is July 10th. STAND UP FOR INDEPENDENCE! Let's have Nick Thomas be one of the choices for 2018. Call me at 0204 and I will come to you with the petition for your signature.

While I was loading water jugs to go get water,my dogs escaped from the house, and took off running like the wind .

so sorry neighbors, you may want to avoid walking your small dogs on leashes,
they seem to think there is something wrong with dogs on leashes...

So sorry for any inconvenience. They will come home on their own, once they have gotten a good run.

I need to go get some drinking water now, be back later.

If you tried to snag a bunch of kale today and found that the lower stems were stuck in an ice block, sorry, that was our bad!!! We are dialing in the systems over here and turns out an ice cream machine bowl left in a cooler in 80-something degree heat will stay cold enough to freeze water! No more veggies frozen in ice blocks from here forward :) Glad to see the radishes and greens got snatched up. Hope you enjoyed!

    Hi neighbors!

We have an abundance of ORGANIC VEGGIES - grown right here in the Bar-K - so we have decided to open a "farm stand" to share the bounty.

We should be all set up by around 9am this morning and have the following available today:

Mixed salad greens - $5/5oz bag
    Radishes - $3/bunch
    Kale - $3/bunch

Items will be limited to start, while we see how this goes.

Our address is 822 Rock Lake Rd. (next to the Archers who are also selling eggs!) and you'll see the stand at the bottom of our driveway. It's a self-serve sorta thing...just take what you want, mark it down/price it out on the clipboard and pay in the pay box.

We hope to have enough to keep this going through the summer, and will have different produce available as the season progresses.

NOTE that we do have a barky dog named Khana who I'm sure you've seen charge down the driveway as you walk past. She's harmless, just barky, and warms up to people more quickly than other dogs, so best to leave your dog(s) at home or in the car :) If she's out and sees you down there she'll probably come running and barking, but just ignore her!

Finally, if you'd like to be put on an email list for every time we have produce available, feel free to email me: ryanjosephk[at]gmail[dot]com.

    Cheers!

Random message to all, but especially for those who are new to living up here.. The bears are "back", so be careful not to leave ANY garbage outside, food (including empty wrappers) in your car, make sure your bird feeders are high off the ground etc.. And finally; DO NOT PUT YOUR TRASH OUT ON THURSDAY NIGHT FOR FRIDAY PICK-UP!!!!
There are a lot of bears up here, and some are quite large... you do not want one coming into your house at 2am, trying to get to your dogs food, trust me ;) they will break car doors/ windows, destroy sheds/ garage doors etc if they smell anything good inside...

I hear ya Pat, I kinda wish they worked on one or at the most two parts of the road at once; there were 6 stops due to flaggers when I went down yesterday, kind of ridiculous.

I saw a sign on peak to peak that the canyon was closed below Ward, not sure for how long as I didn't see the dates. I have been considering going down sunshine canyon until ours gets a little less congested with flaggers stopping us.

That's so sad about the fish ,Jack. The fish over here seem to be doing ok. Pete is always very careful and wets his hands or uses the needle nose pliers and never touches them.

Speaking of fish, I'm trying to find a guy named Erik, that I met at Penny pond about a week ago, who said he was staying here with someone.I can't remember who.

If anyone knows him , we would like to talk to him about the house we are selling, before we get a real estate agent involved, which could be later today, but I'll try to wait and talk to him first. We are willing to sell the house for what he can get financed for at this time, and work with him if he is at all interested.

I thought he was staying up around Ridge Rd, but I knocked on a door last night and it was not there. Maybe he is staying at the Ryan's? I don't know , and don't have a phone number for them. If anyone does know him, or have any info to contact him or whomever is is staying with, please have him call us asap, at 0215. Thanks.

We are ready to sell the house now, and it's ready to move in. We want to sell the house to someone that likes the neighborhood, and wants to live here, and we'll figure out how to make that work for everyone involved. We have a real estate attorney all ready to make this happen. Thanks for any leads of info!

Jack, If you use longer "needle noise" pliers, to remove barb-less fly
you don't even have to touch or take the fish out of the water.
We can do it in under 1 min.

We have a fungus problem on our fish at Rock Lake which will eventually kill the fish.
Wet Your Hands Before Touching Fish Trout are not typically the most hardy fish. If you plan to release the fish be sure to wet your hands prior to touching it. By touching the fish out of water, and with a dry hand—you are removing the protective slime from the surface of the fish. This slime is a barrier on the exterior of the fish to keep bacteria and fungus out. If this slime is removed the fish will very likely die of a fungus. Most of us have had fish tanks while we were growing up. Do you remember that white growth that would form on the fish once in a while? If you recall the fish would inevitably end up dead without treatment almost immediately. Well.. these trout don’t have anyone to provide them with medication. A very easy way to wet your hands is by tapping them on the bottom of your net. This is especially helpful when you are fishing from a high sided driftboat, or a tipsy canoe. This one small step requiring minimal effort from you can go a long way to save a trouts life during your catch and release fishing trips

If you know anyone that is looking to live in the neighborhood, it's a nice starter home.
We just had the floors refinished, and we also are having some snacks and refreshments, if you would just like to visit.
The few pictures on Zillow were taken while the floor guys were there, we're hoping to put some better ones up soon.

Last Saturday morning, I dropped off some items at the annual Ward cleanup day. In the process, my Leatherman "Wingman" multi-tool somehow became disassociated from the interior of my van. I am fairly certain that it happened while the van was being unloaded at Ward. While it's not tremendously expensive, or hard to find another, it has a personal value to me. It does have a laser-etched marking that makes it uniquely identifiable. If anyone here has seen it (not likely) or knows anyone who was working in Ward that day, who might have seen it or heard of it (more likely), please let me know. Ward phone exchange, x.0305, or nmiexi - at- geemail. Thanks.

Hi Neighbors! Does anyone have a decent sized fenced in part of their land they’d be willing to let Kyle and I borrow for training our new pup? Winnie has been with us for about 6 months now and after all of our training classes, it’s time to put what we’ve learned to use but we aren’t ready to do it outside of a fenced in area and dog parks are too big of a distraction for this first part of training. The catch is that we want to start practicing without other dogs for now. If this seems like it might be possible, let me know? We’ll clean up any messes :) Thanks everyone! Kim Renner Busey - to answer your question, no this is not a normal pollen season. It's one of the heaviest I've ever seen and I've been here 37 years. Usually it's either not so heavy to begin with (it's always a pain, anyway) or it rains at some point before it all gets released. The wind this year has been another major factor, which is pretty common, but it seems to have been windier and dryer than usual. Just my 2 cents!

Pollen Storm, so that's what that was when Lila and i drove through from Beaver Rez yesterday afternoon. Amazing.
I thought it might be dust as it was blowing and lightly raining. It seems to me that this year is a good year for
or forest plant life! I guess love is in the air :)

    Try this link, Don: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/vxxgx28pe7njw56...Ub8HKE8TqonXIa?dl=0

My camera was set to one of those pre-defined filter settings when I took this picture (unbeknownst to me), yet thirty seconds later the light changed completely, and the next photo was sorta boring. I got lucky!

Ideas for the Sunset Photo Contest? Bar K area only? Colorado only? Take submissions until Labor Day (what time of year are the best sunsets around here?)...who will judge? One prize or 2? 3? Winners announced at a pot-luck BBQ at the Bar K picnic area? What do you think Bar K neighbors?

Georgie is heading to her resting place this week and would like to send farewell kisses & hugs to her huge extended family pack of people and animals that love her.

She would thank all her good friends for the tremendous love and companionship, (and of course belly rubs) that you gave her! What a long, happy life she’s had for knowing you-she’s certainly one Lucky Dog!

We will remember her Wild, Independent, Loving Spirit and will be grateful, always, to have traveled the Road with this very special Being.

    Dear neighbors ,
Please don't take any of the rocks from the side of the road where we live to landscape your yard. A few years ago , I made a rock garden with some large rocks on the corner , and they disappeared. They were pretty big(a couple ft each) and had to be moved around using logs as leverage. It was really difficult to do. Eventually we plan to do some landscaping around here, and we do not have any rocks to spare, and will have to buy rocks.
Over the years we have lost at least 10 good rocks.I have no idea why people would take rocks from our yard by the road, but we seem to lose a couple every year, so this year I am saying something about it ,hoping we don't lose any more to other peoples landscaping projects. If your landscaper brings you rocks to use , make sure they did not come from our property. We really like our rocks , and need every single one of them here, no matter what size they are.

Should have asked Sal to be here for the picture! Nevertheless,
it was a successful morning. Marty L, Sally P and son Joshua,
Judy F, Patti O and Harry worked diligently. As fate would have
it Western Disposal was pulling out of the Bar-K and Harry
flagged them down. Western picked up the bags and and the rest
of the collection that we had just stacked at mail boxes. In
spite of advisement "not to climb down a ledge" to collect
trash, Sally Parsons captured Marty in just such action. See
photo. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS. It's a wrap for 2018!
