I am wondering who would be interested in having a fall hayride for Bar K residents? We would need someone's tractor or horses, a trailer, some hay bales, and a couple of folks willing to open up their homes for snacks or to serve them at the lake or picnic area. For insurance reasons, we cannot have the hayride on Bar K assoc property. We would need to stick to the roads or private property. I would like to have a planning session by the end of this month. If interested, please email me at BeasleyR9 at gmail.

Tomorrow morning, a helicopter will be used to deliver several utility poles to locations where they'll be installed along James Canyon Drive. Travelers in the canyon can expect delays up to 15-minutes when the poles are brought from town to the install sites. Work will start around 10 a.m. and will take between two and three hours.
Expect single-lane closures along James Canyon Drive between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23 and 24 to safely accommodate crews working along the road to remove straw erosion protection logs that have been in the area since the flood recovery project. The same crews will also be completing other landscaping work along the corridor.
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
    Have a good day.

We're needing to get our septic pumped if anyone wants to go in on that. Please let me know! Thanks!
Usually they like to do more than one house to come up here.
I emailed you a couple days ago Julia, but guessing too late as I didn't hear back from you.

If anyone needs any packing peanuts, the biodegradable kind, and or cardboard boxes, we have a bunch of them to give away.
If no one wants them we're going to haul them off soon, maybe even later today.
Just stop by if you want them! We'll be home until 4 ish.

    Good Afternoon all,

We have an update from Century Link on the installation of permanent fiber lines on telephone poles in James Canyon.

**Weather permitting**, Century Link will be setting 8 poles using a helicopter this THURSDAY, Sept. 19th. The helicopter will initially land at Elysian Park at 9 a.m. and will conduct safety briefings with the team.
The work including temporary road closures will start at 10 a.m. and is anticipated to last 2-3 hours.

    Per the Project Manager:
Each pole delivery flight will last approximately 10-15 minutes and traffic both directions of the canyon will be stopped, there will be 4 deliveries as 2 poles are taken at a time. Traffic will resume for approximately 10 minutes between deliveries.

"Equipment remains the issue. They’ve pushed work back until next Monday to Wednesday, Sept. 16-18. If they can’t hit next week, we may have to postpone the project until next summer. I’ll keep you posted."

So, it wasn't pushed from Mon to Wed, it was pushed from Mon-Thurs of this week to Mon-Wed of next week.

I'm not sure. The last I heard was that the equipment needed was not yet freed up, and that it was shifted from Monday to Wednesday, or to next year. Since Wednesday came and went, I would guess we ain't seeing it. Perhaps you'll get a pleasant surprise! 😨

Would anyone happen to have any plastic shims? Our tile guy is here and the bathtub is not completely level so need something to level it right so he can start tiling the bath. We haven't had a shower or bath for months. I need to drive down to town later so rather not have to twice.
If you have something else that would work, that would be good too, maybe something metal we could use to level the tub.Call or come by if you have any.

    Hi Julia,

Indeed the electric water heater retrofit is the quick fix and surprisingly cost-effective. When our electric unit gave out after 30 years of service I looked at replacing it with gas (propane) but as I recall the break-even point on the propane fuel was very roughly $2/gallon and the payback time for the gas heater was pretty long due to its higher initial cost. The extra wiring in your case is pretty simple and if it were my house I would do it myself and meet code too.

Dave did a natural gas water heater swap for me, in town, last year.

I designed and plumbed the hydronic system here to include zoning but ended up simply balancing the distribution of heat with gate (ball) valves. My heat exchangers and valves are all copper and so are the interconnects, 600' of 3/4" copper as I recall. I have not seen it done with Pex but I am sure that would work.

    Hi John,
For us, our forced air system is not zonable, is wildly inefficient and not very comfortable. As the furnace has died, I’m looking for more sustainable options. I’d start slowly with the parts of the house the wood stove doesn’t heat and I’m pretty good with Pex. I need someone to help me engineer it all though. Thanks for letting me know about Dave.

But to add an electric water heater, I’ll need an electrician as I don’t mess with the electrical panel. Too scary. Any recommendations?

Rose and I are tough by necessity but are hankering for a hot bath. Thanks for the offer of assistance. We are always happy to have a little help. I’ll keep you posted.

    Hi Jula :-),

That's a pretty sophisticated solution. The air-to-water heat pump should have significant cost savings once it was online. The price of the installation, including the retrofit of heat-carrying water pipes inside the house, might give you pause. It sounds as if you want to get away from using the propane as a heating fuel and I can understand that sentiment.

Running hot water is a luxury I wouldn't be without for any length of time, you are one hardy soul. Let me know if there's anything I can do to improve that situation over the near term.

Dave Emmitt at Direct Drive has a lot of experience with many heating appliances that use newer technology.

    Hi Jon,

Actually I have propane forced air but my propane water heater and furnace died a good while back and I’m looking into an air to water heat pump with panel radiators. We’ve been surviving with a wood stove and cold showers for a few years but can’t face another winter like that.

Julia I installed the hydronic heat in our house 25 years ago so I am familiar with those. Is your system using baseboard heaters, or is the heat in the flooring? Are you having issues with it, or just in need of routine maintenance?

Hi Rick- you are correct, and that still exists. There aren't a lot of deputies available to patrol, so they may not pass an area, say island rock, when a campsite is set up, so they campers don't receive the value of the education. If a campsite is set for more than 24h, contact usually gets made. I know there are locals who have pulled off in the evenings on the way home for a few needed z's, so enforcement is pretty loose. If you notice a campsite in a no camping zone, you can always contact BCSO at 303-441-4444, it's the non-emergency number. Typically folks aren't squatting, just over-nighting and then on their way.

You're always welcome to walk through, and if you see any campfires during a ban, please call dispatch 911 is the quickest. When people hear coyote howls, they often mistakenly assume that they’re hearing a large pack of animals, all raising their voices at once. But this is an auditory illusion called the “beau geste” effect. Because of the variety of sounds produced by each coyote, and the way sound is distorted as it passes through the environment, two of these tricksters can sound like seven or eight animals.

Group yip-howls are produced by a mated and territorial pair of “alpha” coyotes, with the male howling while the female intersperses her yips, barks, and short howls. “Beta” coyotes (the children of the alpha pair from previous years) and current year pups may join in if they are nearby, or respond with howls of their own. And once one group of coyotes starts howling, chances are that any other alpha pairs nearby will respond in kind, with chorus after chorus of group yip-howls rippling across the miles.

Pete and I noticed the targets as we were driving in from getting our drinking water in Ward.
Pete took them off the Bar-K sign, as he didn't like the way they looked there, and I agreed(that's why I pulled over, was driving)
We thought they were just weird, and insinuated something weird. Maybe they weren't there long, didn't notice them on our way out.
I believe they are still in my car if anyone wants a closer look at them, just some targets , but not very big, like for shooting guns at.

My dogs have not escaped ever since we fixed the gate on Monday . Today there were people at Penny pond asking me if they could come out and play with them and their dog. I had to decline the offer and explain there were concerned people in the neighborhood wanting to call animal control and sheriffs on them, even if they weren’t actually guilty of anything but escaping. The people were very disappointed, they said they had played with them before and they were so nice and friendly. No worries neighbors, I didn’t fall for the trap. I have no idea who these people are or if they even live around here. And yes, anon, Coyotes, with a few young pups, at least 3 times a night! They come near our house and do their high pitched howling and.hooting until our malamute mix lets out a long low pitched howl for a couple minutes and then they stop. It’s almost a game and routine lately. I also hear them every night and just before dawn. I hope you get some pictures to post!

some folks might be thinking, "oh garbo - there you go sounding off again" which started these latest doggie discussions. I want to apologize to the readers who are asking why and respond one more time before I go back to my quiet lifestyle -

Last summer, two woman over on High Lake Dr. were suddenly attacked by a moose while working in their yard. The moose charged the dog who was just sitting there and turned it's attention to the owner when she stood from working in the garden. She and her partner were seriously hurt and could have been easily killed. I arrived before the first responders, who told me that the moose had just recently been harassed by dogs in the Bar K. A couple weeks ago - there was a report of a dog chasing deer and winning the chase, so this isn't just about dogs running horses. I don't want to see anything or anybody hurt again because of this seemingly ongoing problem. That's all - I'll go back to my good book now...

Can a witness to this behavior please call Animal Control before a person or animal gets injured? The last time we had dogs habitually harassing horses, it got a person severely injured and almost killed because the horses got very defensive towards ANY dog that came near them. It took that and the death of several livestock before anyone started calling. I have not seen these dogs personally or I would be dealing with it asap...

Garbo, I appreciate your comments on the QT and concern for the horses. As far as yesterday, I spoke with the dog owner yesterday and his dog escaped his fence by digging under some area in the yard. He will get his fence fixed over the weekend and this should cure the problem of these barking dogs as well as stop that particular dog from chasing the horses in the South Pasture.

    Bar-anon,

Yes, the coyotes are a problem and all of what you say is true. Neighborhood dogs who bark all the time or who are running at large have also been problems. Even after all the "back and forth about howling complaints and whose dogs chased what horses" that you mentioned - I watched yesterday from my deck as a black dog harassed the horses in south pasture. The dog wasn't attacking them in the physical sense (and again i urge you to call the authorities if you see this happening) but it was running them around for a little while. So, you see - none of this is really a misunderstanding at all - thank you.

I have never posted here but glanced to see if anyone was talking about the (presumably) coyotes that are in the area. Then I noticed all the back and forth about howling complaints and whose dogs chased what horses. I think it's possible there's a misunderstanding.

There is a pack of canines in the area and these are not domesticated animals. I'm assuming these are coyotes, but haven't seen them yet. At dusk, middle of the night and always just before dawn, you can hear groups of high pitched calls. I am 100% certain these are not domestic animals and I'm highly confident that it's a group of coyotes. There is a group a few hundred yards away from me and they are new to the area. There are about three groups in all that I can hear in different spots of Bar K with a total of approximately 9-12 individuals.

I'm inclined to believe some of the complaints blamed on family dogs may really be because of these wild canines that are in the area. When/if I get images I'll share to help validate what I'm saying.

    Jackie,

I won't even respond to your nonsense other than to say these couple things... We know that your dogs howl... They've woken us up at all hours of the night because we dare sleep with our windows open.

When your pups run and they often do - even the best behaved dogs in this community will bark at the sight of them. There are lots of good dogs up here and people love them and treat them as part of their family. I can't blame these animals for barking, but I can fault you for letting your dogs run. In one of your previous messages you stated that your dogs were running again, that you were ok with it and hoped we all were too. Well, not all of us are ok with it... I've lived up here for a long time and people have always had issues with your dogs at one time or another. If I made it sound like your dogs were the ones chasing the horses, I have twice apologized, so get over it... It was after all - your dogs I saw below Penny Lake, which is exactly what Ashley had described. It was an honest mistake...

I certainly don't want to see your dogs or anybody's else's killed as you suggest will happen and to ramble on about such things is of no interest to me. Please keep your dogs at home and quiet at night and we won't have any more issues. Some of your neighbors might actually thank you for your efforts, as I tried to do.

Also Jackie - your verbal attacks on Robert Billinger. He was a good person and a friend to many of us old Bar K'rs for a lot of years. He's no longer here to defend himself, so I'll tell you that I find your nasty comments about him utterly tasteless. You make it sound like he was the only person to have ever have had issues with your dogs. Lots of people have had issues with your dogs and for many years now. Please be more considerate of your neighbors. We all have to live here and we should be able to enjoy our homes without conflict from neighbors and their pets. This will be my last response to you and I sure hope we can all get along...

If anyone else reading this is ever witness to dogs attacking horses - please call the Boulder County Animal Control Unit at 303-441-3626 or call Boulder County Communications at 303-441-4444. The life you save may be that of the horse...

    Garbo,
You clearly described dogs that looked like mine and accused them of chasing horses.
You also posted that people should call animal control or Boulder county dispatch regarding them.
I believe the authorities are also legally able to shoot dogs for chasing livestock and wildlife or capture them and have them euthanized after a court hearing,if they are reported for chasing horses or livestock.
I was suggesting that you should shoot the actual offending dogs when you catch them chasing horses because it would be more humane(if you were a good shot) than all the other possible scenarios around calling authorities and possibly accusing and convicting the wrong dogs (and wrong dog owners suffering legal consequences) and having them put down or shot by law enforcement. I am 99% sure my dogs have never chased horses ,but if you see them doing so,I'd rather you shoot them on the spot than deal with the legal consequences you might have involved with whatever calls you might make. If my dogs were captured, separated and put in cages in a shelter while waiting on a legal decision, it would be cruel and horrible for them. They are inseparable for one thing, and would cry and howl constantly in a cage awaiting a legal decision from a judge. I'd have to have them both put down in that case because it would be the most humane thing to do with them.

Also, My dogs don't bark. They howl like wolves which is much easier on the ears. I intentionally got this breed of dogs because I cant stand dog barking noise myself. They are supposed to have more malamute in them than husky, and obviously the white one looks more like a Samoyed, so her mother may have been messing around with a Samoyed when she got pregnant with that litter. They are siblings that are 6 mos apart and have been together and not able to separate them since Eleanor thought she gave birth to Quinn when he was 7 weeks old. they also have some other siblings in the area, so the other ones might be escaping and doing things they wouldn't do.I have been traumatized in the past by neighbors accusing my Labrador retrievers of running loose, and had to go through all sorts of legal crap, when it wasn't even them ,but other pups that we sold to neighbors that were pups of mine and looked identical if you didn't know them personally. I am feeling a bit threatened by the possibility of legal dog issues concerning genetically related and look alike dogs in the neighborhood.I'm not talking trash Garbo, this is a very valid concern I have regarding your posts and the language you used that seemed to be condemning my dogs and accusing dogs that look like them of chasing horses. You even clearly state that you will call animal control , and what if animal control comes to my house to get my dogs and they were not even the right dogs? It has happened before Garbo! We went through legal dog hell for years and at lest half the time it wasn't even our dogs but related ones! We never actually ratted out the neighbor dogs or neighbors that owned them because it was us being harassed by Robert Billinger, that hated us and enjoyed harassing us. I am being triggered by your comments. I do have PTSD from the previous neighbor attacking us for so many years and using dogs to do it. I'd rather you just shoot my dogs or whatever dogs you are seeing chasing horses than go through that legal hell again! At the very least you would have the right dogs if they were shot while in the act of chasing the horses , and not risk hurting the wrong dogs or dog owners. If my dogs are chasing horses, I would prefer you just shoot them on the spot.

    Jackie,

I resent your implications that I would ever shoot anyone's dog for chasing livestock and/or wildlife. Please go talk your trash somewhere else... I've been living in this ranch for 30 years and have witnessed many dog and horse issues. For those who don't know me, I worked for Bar K for 15 years as the horse committee representative and common land management. Most people called me (or Jack) when there were dogs harassing horses and we got a lot of calls over the years. My own horse was chased until he almost dropped dead, sweating, shaking, and in terrible distress. I would hope to never witness anything like this again and will call animal control if I see anyone's dog chasing horses...

I didn't actually see your dogs running the horses, so I can only apologize again if I caused any confusion. Thank you for fixing your gate because we all know that even the most well behaved dogs will bark at other dogs who are running free.

There were dogs chasing deer up on Overland last week and you are correct about the law. If caught harassing wildlife, the dog can be destroyed by authorities and if harassing livestock, the same holds true for the owners of the livestock - they are permitted to destroy the dog... I have never heard of such a thing happening around here, but I have heard about several vet bills from injured horses over the years...

Many of us care about our neighbors and we put up with a lot because we don't want to create any bad feelings. Now that I know that the huskies belong to you, you can expect me to call or message when they are running loose. It's been more than just a couple times and I do appreciate your recent efforts to keep them at home.

Habitual barkers should also be discouraged from disturbing others. I've read a couple of messages on here, asking owners to make more of an attempt to quiet their dogs. Do you know what your dogs are doing while you're gone all day?

    Thanks Austin,
Yes they come home by themselves after about an hour of freedom.
I appreciate you reporting that they were not chasing horses by your house. I'm concerned they may be blamed by other neighbors due to some posts below...

When they were little pups, I introduced them to horses , and watched them around the horses, and they have never chased them.
I tried to train them mainly by making them comfortable around the horses, and showing them the horses were my friends.
I would have scolded them had they done anything out of line, but they never did anything or chased the horses.
They were not running all last week. There were only one or 2 times they ate through the gate, so Pete built a new one that they can't get through.
There were a couple other times they got out 2-3 weeks ago, when we had people working on the house here.

Your dogs came to visit he other day again. I didn’t catch them this time as you said they normally return home. The horses were in the pasture behind the house and they never chased them so I don’t think it was them. I’ve never seen dogs chasing horses in the pasture behind the house but will keep a careful watch.

Catching up on the latest dog reports.
Our dogs did get out once the other day, maybe twice over the last week. We built a new gate, Quinn was literally eating through the old one.
I've never witnessed my dogs going after horses, and I don't think it was them. Ive seen them run right by them and not bother them.
I really hope it wasn't them, so sorry if they bothered anyone . They do look like husky mixes, and one is white.
Hoping the new gate keeps them in the fence now. So sorry if anyone was bothered. Please be sure what dogs are chasing horses if you call animal control.
Whatever dogs are chasing horses will most likely be put down or shot if they are caught in the act by animal control or authorities.
I really doubt my dogs were chasing the horses, but can only imagine what might happen if someone accused them of it.
You can legally shoot a dog for chasing livestock, so if you choose to do that, make sure you are a good shot and the dogs don't suffer, Garbo.

Please talk to me and let me know if you plan to report them to animal control for chasing livestock so we can be emotionally prepared for the outcome of that report.

Maybe Bar K can list a representative who's number we can call when we witness dogs chasing horses. Or call animal control and I've posted those numbers in a previous message. The vet bill for injured horses can be outrageous and unnecessary. Please keep you dogs at home, whoever you are....

Source of the persistent gunshots is the first house west of Ceran St. Vrain, on the south side of Overland. I don't mind a bit of target practice but it seems like the action should have been moved to a gun range by now.

    Good afternoon,

The National Weather Service has upgraded the forecasted Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning for areas of Boulder County tomorrow – Sun 8/25.

This means that Open Burning is PROHIBTED County Wide. This will be in effect for the entire day – starting at 0001 until 2359.

Additionally, Monday and Tuesday are forecasted to moderate some, but the Red Flag Warning could extend into these days.

Lastly, please use patience across the mountain areas when making contact with residents and recreationalists. With the Red Flag Warning occurring later in the weekend, it is probably that some folks will not know about the increase in fire danger levels.

Fire Management will have 7-day staffing starting tomorrow to help assist, and be available for questions if needed. And, as always, don’t hesitate to page to the FDO or give me a call on my cell.

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 8 PM MDT SUNDAY FOR WIND AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR NORTH PARK, MIDDLE PARK, SOUTH PARK, THE FAR NORTHERN MOUNTAINS AND FOOTHILLS AND THE CHEYENNE RIDGE...

The National Weather Service in Denver has issued a Red Flag Warning FOR WIND AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY, which is in effect from 11 AM to 8 PM MDT Sunday. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

    * Affected Area...Fire Weather Zones 211...213...214...215...

      238 and 242.

    * Winds...West 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

    * Timing...Late Sunday morning through Sunday evening.

    * Relative Humidity...As low as 14 percent.

    * Impacts...Fires will start easily and spread rapidly.

    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring in the short term forecast. A combination of strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Brian met our new neighbor today and she told him about two dogs who were harassing the horses. I just spotted these two dogs again and they are same dogs were that were running free and causing ruckus around Bar K all last week. The two dogs that I'm talking about are huskies or husky mix, one of them white. Perhaps the owner/s can fix the fence where they are getting out and keep their dogs at home. They're running all the time and my next move is to call the Boulder County Animal Control Unit at 303-441-3626 or call Boulder County Communications at 303-441-4444.

Hey neighbors, ~45 minutes ago noticed 3 dogs barking/biting at the horses down in the pasture by the community garden. The horses were pretty stoic in response. I believe they were medium-large dogs of brown, black, and brown&white coloring. They took off heading east after 10-15 minutes of that.

Hi everyone! Got shoes in the back of the closets you would like to get rid of? Our non profit, WeVOL is collecting donations of gently used shoes to send to an orphanage in Arusha, Tanzania. This group has already assisted the orphanage in securing a consistent water source and other projects, and has more planned. On a recent visit, the need for shoes was identified, for all ages.

There is now a box placed near the organ at the Merc for you to place your donated shoes. I will be collecting through the end of September, and I am happy to pick up at your place if that is easier. Give me a call at 7two0-four90-5998.

There are also a bunch of flyers there describing the non profit as well as more info on the kids and orphanage. Please bring in some shoes. It means so much to them and it is way better than flinging them over the utility lines like all those college kids... ( no offense to college kids)

Regarding thistles- I noticed that someone bothered to pull some big ones and left them on the road.
They will continue to mature and go to seed after they are pulled, so if you are going to bother pulling them, it's a good idea to bag them up,
or at least cut the flowers off and bag those up and dispose of them in the landfill.
You can cut the flowers off, and those big ones will eventually not come back because they are sort of annuals.
The Canadian thistles do get overwhelming , but I noticed the migrating birds eat a lot of the seeds in the fall, if left standing.
I usually leave a little bit for the birds, if I'm mitigating thistles here.
If I have the time and energy to cut all the flowers off and big them up, and pull some, they really do eventually stop taking over and go away!

We need a person or persons with thick, heavy gloves to pull thistles on our property. There are a lot, but they are easy and fun to pull because we have had so much rain! They will need to be hauled away, also, so a truck would be needed. If you can do it or know someone who can, please give us a call. This is paid work, so let us know--we can negotiate price. 0205

I am so happy to hear Rosie is back at home and safe! Yay!
I was so worried she had been eaten by the pack of coyotes I heard around dusk last night...
Other than that, things seemed quiet around here, unless I slept through something.
I tried getting the dogs in, but they were so exhausted from the previous night, they wouldn't even get up to come in the house.
We all slept pretty soundly, and Jay didn't come at 3 am as he promised, so assuming everything was ok and he got some sleep too.
If Sampson likes dogs and everyone is ok with it, I could always let my dogs out and maybe they could find him.
Meanwhile, I'll continue to hope ,and keep an eye out for him.

We carry dog biscuits when we go for our evening walk but haven’t seen any stray dogs- just the usual suspects. I sure hope you find your dog. I’d contact the Longmont Humane Society as well as the ones Jackie listed, you never know.

One of the girls I work with went camping in Poudre Canyon with her 3 dogs. Just before they left to come home, all three dogs took off after something, and only 2 of them came back. She put up posters and came home. About 4 weeks (or maybe even 6 wks, I don’t remember but it was a long time) the Humane Society contacted her. Someone found her dog near the campground and they contacted her through the information on the dog’s microchip. Sometimes miracles happen. I wish you the best of luck and a miracle.

We had a bear try and get in our fenced in area last night. Dogs must have chased him off but not before it pulled a section of fencing half way down. Not the first time it has tried. My guess is it was wondering the neighborhood last night. Could be why so many unhappy dogs.

Nate and Whitney, I really hope you find Rosie.
There are a few lost dog groups on fb, I saw you posted on one of them.
Another local one is Missing Nedpets Alert
and there is also Lost and found dogs of Colorado,
and Peak to Peak lost pets, which I think is where I saw your post.

I just got home , if you want to come over Jay, or feel free to come at any time the dogs are bothering you in the middle of the night.
The other dog is gone now, so tonight should be more peaceful.I hope you sleep well tonight
The room the dogs usually sleep in is currently gutted, so they haven't figured out where to sleep, since then.
It may be part of the issue that their home has been completely disturbed. We'll make them stay in tonight, no matter what they tell us.

I'll keep an eye out for the golden retriever and Rosie.

    Hey guys,

A rescue I volunteer with has reported a missing dog up at Brainard Lake. Could you help spread the word to folks up that way to see if anyone has seen a golden retriever dog

In case this helps anyone: The gooey silicone ear plugs work great to block out barking at night. McGuckin’s Insta Putty ones work the best for me.

I’m sorry, I just saw that the missing dog is a girl named Rosie. My best dog ever was named Rosie, Rosie May, and I still miss her terribly. As some of you old timers might remember, I got in a lot of legal trouble because of her and her pack of pups that lived with various neighbors that adopted them long ago, thanks to Robert Billinger, and they didn’t even bark or keep him up at night . They just ran by his house. Anyway, none of that matters anymore, all those dogs died years ago. I’m no stranger to the dog police, so go ahead and have at me. By the way, my husband Pete has no idea about all this latest dog drama. I haven’t been able to reach him all day. I might not tell him. You can tell him when you come by later Jay. I’m sure I will get in big trouble then. I really wish I had just let them all out of the fence last night. Maybe they would have gone after whatever it was or found Rosie.

Thanks for the sympathy and I will be home this evening, aiming for 7 ish . Please come by and introduce yourself Jay. I can’t remember meeting you, doesn’t mean I didn’t meet you,my memory is just bad. It would be great if you came by the house to meet the monsters that have been keeping you up at night. Please yell at me and them, it would be a good diversion from the trauma my son is going through and will be going through for a while. It would help him take his mind off this morning. He could have gone to the emergency therapy appointment with my daughter and granddaughter, but he chose not to at this time. I will welcome someone hating me and my dogs for the diversion this evening. I apologize to anyone else that was disturbed last night also. However, if you were really listening, you’d know that there were other dogs or something, maybe coyotes, barking most of the night also. I don’t know who’s or what the actual disturbance was, but I sure hope that beagle comes back home. I thought I might have heard a beagle howling in the distance and maybe he was lost and all the neighborhood dogs were trying to help him find his way home. If I didn’t have my own issues today, I would have gone out looking for him. I didn’t know until someone told me that my dogs were disturbing someone and to check here . So sorry.

To “Advocate...” This is a community message board. We sign our names to our posts and do not appreciate anonymous posts.

I’ve lived in the mountains of Boulder County for over 50 years, so I am far from a mountain newbie. I also love dogs (and wolves, coyotes, bears, mountain lions, deer, moose, bobcats and hummingbirds.) However, dogs barking all night or day is not an integral part of the mountain experience and it is not okay.

Barking dogs do not actually scare bears away or protect property from bears. They just disturb humans.

Jackie, I am so sorry to hear about your family crisis. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Well put, Don! Barking (and loose dog) issues seem to come and go up here (29 years and counting), but even dog owners like Don probably don't like to deal with incessant barking at night. If we could just control the pesky light pollution from the plains as well, it sure has made the night sky less awesome over the years. And thanks for explaining this particular situation, Jackie, sorry about your loss.

That was not me posting as advocate for the wolves, but since I heard that I should check the qt, I am posting. I always use my name when I post here. I’m so sorry Jay. I didn’t get much sleep last night either. I’m in Boulder dealing with a family emergency and death right now. I’ve been dog sitting a sibling and they all like to howl a lot when they are together. Last night there was something else howling along, other dogs were barking a lot too, and we tried to keep our pack quiet and get them inside but they just wouldn’t cooperate. I’m really sorry, the 3rd member of the pack is getting picked up today so hoping things are quieter tonight. I’ll keep my 2 inside tonight. I’m not sure when I will get back up there, but I will make sure I get there by dark. Feel free to come over whenever Jay. Chances are I won’t be sleeping either. I’m sorry neighbors . Mine were not the only pack going off last night, but I know mine were, they kept us up too. I have to get back to the kids now, they are traumatized by a different situation.

I'm pretty sure that the longest-duration resident of the Bar K does not approve of hours of barking dogs after dark, especially in the Summer when the windows are open. If that is what you are used to, I'm glad I don't live in your neighborhood. I do agree about the newbies' driving and rudeness, but the one issue does not relate to the other.

I don't even live in this neighborhood. I was on QT for info about the firewood.
I Have lived in these hills for almost 40 years. I do grow oh so tired of flatlander newbies coming up here and attempting to "control" the natural order of things. Be it the water, wildlife, woods.
Meanwhile, most newbies fly up and down our dirt roads, waste Bo Co Sheriff time with ridiculous complaints that could easily be handled with tolerance! for environment they choose! to innundate.
So, thanks to you all for tolerating my post. And good luck training the flatlanders on the ways of the mountains

Sorry Advocate for the wolves, but I am with Jay on this. Dogs barking to protect us when there actually ARE bears etc is one thing. Howling continuously for hours on end is not fun. Loving the peace and quiet of the Bar-K

Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most.

If not howling hybrids, would be screeching coyotes, bears knocking stuff around, etc!
Personally, I prefer "mans best friend" doing the job of protecting the hood of intruders than guns going off when bears come...
Perhaps you should get a script for Valium, relax, and think about all the truly! disturbing sounds in the hood: bulldozers, electrical power lines, hum of cell tower.

Why, you ask, am I posting from work at 11:30 am? So glad you ASKED. I've been yawning all morning and the afternoon is looking ominous in terms of daytime fatigue... because dog owners near Ranch and Ridge are letting Fi-fi and Fido howl at will. This has been unusually frequent this summer. I don't know why. That said, I'm not willing to pay the price for your inability or unwillingness to reign them in... going forward, if they wake me up at 3:00 am, guess what, I wake you up. Now, others would simply, anonymously, have Officer Friendly pay you a visit. But I'm willing to start the conversation in person, albeit earlier in the morning than either of us would like. So save us both the aggravation and shut 'em in and shut 'em up. Or leave your porch light on for me. Thanks.

According to our mountain Sheriff Deputy Mike Chickos, the white van that has been parking adjacent to the old shooting area on the switchbacks occasionally, is doing so legally. He owns the mineral rights to the adjoining 20 acres.
