This movie used to be played every school holidays in the late seventies (summer vacation) in Melbourne, Australia IT ROCKED!!!!! (especially the hot rod scenes done with matchbox cars and a real lizard)
Every year we used to stay at grandmothers house and every year the Giant Gila Monster came on. You have only just jogged my memory about the ukelele playing to the crippled sister scene :)
I wonder if this movie had an influence on my own ukelele playing habit which I picked up when I was about thirteen?

Could Roy have been a Disney relative? Like, Walt's nephew or somesuch?

Or maybe just a fun-loving clean-cut Boy Scout leader kind of guy of the sort we just can't take seriously any more?

He sounds remarkably like 'Jimmy' of the Mousketeers. I'd give a lot to know what became of his mouse-shaped guitar. It was so small it might have passed for a ukelele.

Btw, did anyone ever figure out what the hell 'Roy' was doing on the Mouseketeers?

The MST3K version apparently also saw the creation of the Giant Gila Monster Knee-Up Drinking Game. Whenever someone in the movie puts their knee up on something, take a drink!
