Regards the reference to "The Mote is God's Eye" in No.8, the main reason why the ship died was the people were not aware of the danger and refused to call in/tell the people (for reasons not relevant here) who were aware of the same. The same analogy can be stretched to the real world, people may not be realising the danger, and on even realising it they may refuse to call in the experts.
