"For me, coding is a form of self-expression."

[insert sound of my head exploding]

I'm all for programming as art, but if you can't see coding as a means to an end you're only half a programmer. With a .plan as pretentious as that you sound like a petulant engineer who can afford to take a paycheck for granted.

Moral of this story:

If you don't want someone to tell you what to do, don't sell out to a huge company.

At least this guy has mountains of cash to keep him warm as he embarks on any new endeavor, I just find it odd that he sells his soul to the Devil and then says "Gee, it's warm down here".

AOL paid roughly a gazillion dollars for Nullsoft -- presumably for Winamp and also for the future apps that the team would continute to develop.

WASTE sounds potentially cool -- why wouldn't AOL want to retain the opportunity to market it, perhaps as the business tool that Nullsoft described it as: "WASTE is designed to enable small companies and small teams within larger companies to easily communicate and collaborate in a secure and efficient fashion."

It doesn't seem right to take work you do for somebody else and release it as GPL. In fact, it's most likely not really GPL on account of that, but I guess that just doesn't matter...

That tok a lot longer than it should have. I'd thought there would have been a mass exodus at the time AOL bought Nullsoft, over 2 years ago to my memory?

Well, yes, they do control his code; that's what they were paying him for. But if he can make a living controlling his own code, more power to him.

"I have nothing but respect for the company--I've just come to realize thatit is time to do something different."

First John Dvorak blogs on BoingBoing, and then Frankel declares his love for AOL. Somebody wake me up.
