I tried this several months ago, and it made no difference. I think it's safe to say the wifi sensitivity just kind of sucks by design, though maybe some people's machines will get out of whack in this way.

If my antenna is functioning perfectly, I hate to think what sort of reception the people that used this trick and saw an improvement were getting...

It depends.

This bit being loose can mean you have even WORSE reception than normal for a TiBook. If it isn't loose, you won't see any improvement.

I've had about three out of twenty odd TiBooks have particularly bad reception, and this fixed it.

Is this what you call a vacation, Cory? :-)

Fair question, Wes. I'm only blogging the stuff I really, really don't want to lose track of for one mysterious reason or another this week, instead of random interesting things. This is good detail for fiction.

Just what I was wondering, Wes. ;-)

Agreed. For fiction, this strikes me as being very much along the lines of hitting the Hyperdrive with a spanner. Suddenly, it mysteriously comes back to life and our heroes zip away from the bad guys at the last second.

Massaging the antenna, eh?
XAWWT NAXT! (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

I'm still suffering w/ my TiBook/400 for a while (although having X11 configured properly is an improvement). I saw someone once with an external flat-panel antenna mounted on the back of his TiBook wired to his Airport card via the PC Card slot. Anyone know of a decent place to get something like this?

This did nothing for me (note: this is sort of an old solution - I read about and tried this at least 2 months ago). I have to echo the posts that say that if what I have is normal TiBook reception, I truly feel for those who have "bad" reception.

I've found nothing to improve my reception. I note that there are external antennas for Airport Extreme basestations, but nohing for first rev basestations. If anyone has a proven solution, I'm willing to hack around with a dremel tool and some wire, but I'm leery of wasting time doing something that will offer no improvement.

Hoax.
The TiBook has bad reception because it is a Faraday cage. Some ways to get better reception are
a) cut more holes in the case (not a great idea)
b) use an antenna outside the metal box

c) use a whole WiFi card outside the box

The biggest improvement for me? Moving the base-station closer to the couch. That inverse square law pays off every time.
