IMHO, Jeff Bezos/ Amazon is precariously balanced between the Dark Side and the model business of the future. I am still not comfortable with the "stock market hype is our most important revenue" business model. The stock market is not a whuffie market. In the hyper networked modern era, I have soft spot for my local, independently owned, brick and mortar bookstores. I usually don't buy books from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or Borders. But I do like Amazon's reviews, and particularly the user review feature. Actually Amazon authored reviews are more like long versions publisher promotion material than reviews. I do like the convenient access to other reviews.
The recognition is cool - you can't buy publicity like that.
Re: NPR vs Boing Boing audience size
If Boing Boing had the audience of NPR, Boing Boing could charge people like John Dvorak to publish their guest columns. (Or Boing Boing could go public like Amazon, and make money that way.)

Anthony, yer kidding, right?
1. NPR has about three orders of magnitude more listeners than Boing Boing has reaaders
2. I gave Jeff a copy of my novel in page-proofs at a convention about six months before it came out. He's posted a review of it to the Amazon sell-page, and has often spoken to me to tell me how much he liked it. He's writing a blurb for my short-story collection.

Two Things:
1. Unfortunetly so many of the "informed" people that listen to NPR are probably already regulars on boingboing.net
2. I find it ironic that the head of the largest book retailer in the world(not sure if that is accurate) mentions a book(great book) that can be downloaded for free. The real question is...did Jeff download the book, receive a review copy from Cory/his publisher, or order the book from his site(for free I am sure...or on a company card and write-it off)?
Of course maybe old Bezos has readers on staff that read, summarize and recommend books that he would like...wouldn't that be nice...oh wait! We all have that...that is why I troll on weblogs like this...god I love the internet.
What I want is an update in a week or so as to whether or not this affected his sales rank on Amazon.

I notice that Amazon-Boy didn't mention that the full text is available for free online. :)

Very cool indeed! (I recommend it too... although I'm not Jeff Bezos!) You completely captured politics at The Mouse! It's not quite that bad today, but it sure is close! Keep up the great writing!
