My suggestion: find and watch "Lagaan," it will knock your socks off. It was nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign film.

Most of the Bollywood DVD's I've rented on Netflix have NO english subtitles what so ever... so missing the plot points/character development in the songs is not really a problem. You have to follow the plot through visual and contextual means only.
With a few notable exceptions, I find musicals painful to watch. Exceptions being Bollywood stuff, Rocky Horror, Little Shop of Horrors, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Fact: If the musical numbers are an integral part of the narrative then the film will never be popular in America. Notice that, with very rare exceptons, musicals in this country win critical acclaim and bomb at the box office. Of course, the real question is: who cares? All cultures have elements that are unpalatable to others. You won't get people who can't handle spicy food to enjoy a good curry either so -- as my granmother always said -- to each his own.

"Song as exposition" = "that's scary stuff, kids" to entertainment honchos. That's why "Buffy: The Musical" didn't get the awards nods.
