And that's why I go to Borders... You can look it up yourself and not deal with people. Although I do suppose that if the computers were down I'd be out of luck. Then I'd grab a coffee and browse.

"books in Print" what have you been smoking, guy? Next you'll be telling me you can get a set of books with all the words in the English language in it. You're a card...

After microfiche, BIP has also been distributed as a CD-ROM. In fact, ever try to correct an error at Amazon? Once a month it reverts to the bad info redistributed by books-in-print. In fact, Amazon basically started off a glorified web-portal to the BIP database.

I really like barnes and nobel, but its ignorant that you have to have an employee look books up for you on the computer. There is no reason not to make a few publically accessible terminals that intelligent people can use to look up the desired information theirselves.

Ah! But if you asked a librarian, you would have been taken away by men in black suits!

WTF were you doing in B&N anyway?? Oh, that's right -- it happens to be located in the same spot as your favorite Starbuck's.

Former longtime Barnes and Noble employee here.. We all wished B&N had a publicly accesible terminal, too. I got sick of morons asking me things like "Where's the non-fiction section?" or "I'm looking for this book. All I remember is that the cover is blue and there's a lot of pictures inside." I can't speak for all B&N's, since I was at the biggest and best-run in Atlanta, but our average employee had a lot more literary knowledge than the employees at the nearby Borders.
Quick anecdote... I was on vacation visiting my sister and San Francisco. We decided to go to B&N so she could mooch off my employee discount. So there I was wandering through their sci-fi section, noticing how I kept mine in a lot better condition, when someone walked up and started asking me for help. Even on vacation....

Imagine if you went in, asked for Books In Print, and they directed you to a single copy of the print version, for all to share. You'd be posting about how hopelessly clueless B&N was, that they wouldn't have it online.
Computers go down, for all kinds of reasons. Some people just go looking for a reason to ridicule others.
