It is a lot more than 'one tiny spot!' And, even if that were the case, 'one tiny spot' is a hell of a lot better than many isolated places now get!
The idea with these long point to point links is to get the bandwidth to the area. Once you have signal on the island, or on the reservation, you can rebroadcast it. And then every spot that can receive the signal can repeat the signal...and on and on.
At Etech in April we were out of range of the conference wireless network. We stuck an antenna out the window and grabbed a signal, then repeated that into the room so everyone had connectivity.
Doing that over longer distances, 10 miles and up with good topography, is straight forward.
Also...it is not pure 'WiFi.' It uses KarlNet's 'TurboCell' at the transport layer.
Pure 802.11b is limited to something like 25 miles because of a timing issue...damn speed of light interfering with everything!
