Well for one thing they didn't invite me,also I stumbled on another coven involved in a group grope in a park one day and personally I think they'd all be better off with Earnest Angley. What are Liberal/Hicksite Quakers?

Of course, I'm curious about what he'd think of Liberal/Hicksite Quakers.

Geez, it's kind of flattering to be targeted. Hard to believe that we show up on anyone's radar screen. I seem to recall that at last count there were more Hindus in the U.S. than Unitarian Universalists on the whole planet. (Unless you count Congregationalists: rumor has it that UCC actually stands for "Unitarians Considering Christ.")

I'm sorry, what's wrong with witch orgies? That sounds GREAT!

Flaming Liberal that I am, I thought the Unitarians were going too far when they allowed witchcraft covens to have orgies on their property,in the name of respecting all spiritual paths.Gimme that old time religion any day.

Back in the day, one route out of the 'Nam draft was to get registered as a Unitarian minister. That or cut off a little toe, which was hell on your hackey-sack game.

wow. that's too funny.

i used to go to Unitarian church camp and half the time I felt like I was at a Dead show. It was less about religion and more about playing hackey sack with guys who simply LOOKED a lot like Jesus. good times.

The smooth, round stones on the beach marvel at the uniformity of their universe. “God must be smooth and round,” they murmur, oblivious to the sandy broken bones, shards, and corners of ancestors who worshipped jagged gods, and molten gods.

If there can't be a creation without a creator neither can there be a creator without a creation.Or is that obvious?

While simplistic in("If there is a universe, there must have been a creator") it's too bad more evangelicals haven't heard more of what Carrigan is saying:
"1) Be patient and take time to find out exactly what your friends believe"
"2) Be especially gentle, humble and non-judgmental."
"3) Be prepared to use reason"

Patience, gentle humility and reason? Pretty heretical for most evangelicals. (Of course elsewhere he talks about how dangerous Harry Potter is, losing major points).

The assumption that Unitarians don't believe in god (or God) is patently offensive. He's lost his argument with me from the getgo. Further:

If there is a universe, then there must have been a Universe Maker, God.

That's a load of crap right there.

And that's the way to divert Fundies who are trying to "witness" to you in this manner. Argue with them about that basic assumption.

The second thing is, even assuming there's a god or God, who is to say that the Fundie Christian doctrine is the only valid understanding of God? That is just as offensive.

Rhyax: I think "Dr. Cky" at least deserves props for understanding what secular humanism is and giving us a measure of respect, which is unusual for Southern Baptists. The argument usually boils down to "secular humanism is just godless atheism, an excuse to morally rationalize buggering children." His explanation of the difference between a nihilist and a humanist is dead-on.

"If the universe looks like it has been designed, then there must have been a Universe Designer." beep beep beep beep

You may want to soften your presentation by sprinkling your conversation with phrases like, "It seems to me," or, "Perhaps," or, "Have you ever considered?" This kind of approach does not compromise your conviction. It merely demonstrates subtly that you value them as a person, you value their opinion, and their search for truth.

That is fantastic.

"Unitarian-Universalists highly value racial and gender equality. Any subtle signs of racial or gender superiority by you will be met with extreme resistance... They are generally very environmentally conscious and nature friendly."

Wow, it makes me so proud people think of us this way. The whole thing really makes me happy, when people who think of you as the enemy say such nice things about you... Is cory unitarian, or is this just general silliness? :)
