My 9 month old daughter has kept me chronically sleep deprived since the moment she joined us. Wife and child went to visit family out of town this week and I got my first full night's sleep since July.

I feel like the guy from Flowers for Algernon.

Count backwards from 7,365.
You probably won't make it to 7,265.
Don't start with any other number; it won't work.

I've got a pretty steady pre-game going that works for me. A glass of wine (more than one keeps me awake) about an hour ahead, check the email/blogs, read a dull book in bed. I rarely lie awake if I keep this schedule, but my problem is that I start it too late and don't get enough sleep since there's no flex in the time I have to get up.

My husband likes to listen to very soft music, but if he picked the wrong channel the x#%^ing BBC wakes me up the next morning at about 5:30. It's interesting, so it wakes me up. And I can't get back to sleep. Damn!

You know, you told me the audiobooks thing but I missed the part where you were using them to go to sleep... All this time I've been thinking that my brain is broken because they put me out immediately. Thank God I don't try to listen to them in the car!

Why you wanna tell me that, Cory?

Anyway, I have two methods for getting to sleep that I pull out when it gets tough (which is every night before a work day): one, crossword puzzles. Sunday, Will Shortz Times variety only. You work on it for awhile and when you get to the point where you're going over and over answers that aren't coming to you, your brain shuts down nicely.

Second, is I log on and read alt.support.sleep-disorder. It's mostly people bitching about their CPAP and BiPAP and whateverthePap, but there are other threads too and for some reason, reading about people not sleeping makes me sleepy.

off topic: web pages (like this one) which don't allow *any* views without cookies enabled really irritate me.

No kidding - sleep dep screws you up? THAT explains the anti-depressants ...

In all seriousness, I've suffered from insomnia for the past several years, getting so out of whack that I would have panic attacks while trying to go to sleep. Its amazing the problems that can arise from sleep deprivation - but by far the worst is the chronic depression.

Say what you want about society being overmedicated, but Zoloft saved my worthless butt from cracking up something fierce. I'm not perfect, but at least I can function again.

I'm going to guess that Orthopod's hours are a rare exception.

I've gone so far as to sleep in the basement or at a friend's house when I have lots of deadlines. My SO is a sleeping, coughing, snoring sinus, and if I miss sleep my ADD flares up something fierce. I guess I've gotten neurotic about it.

Funny that sleeplessness is so associated with the hacker/silicon valley ethic. I bet it has produced tons of crap code.

This must be my secret advantage... I generally try to be sure to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night and sometimes sacrifice other things to do it. It's worked well for me. Guess this is what is meant by work smarter not harder.

Here's the obligatory references to Uberman's Sleep Schedule, in which you take six 20 minute naps per 24-hour period. Supposedly the body learns to go directly into REM sleep when you hit the pillow.

is this another sleep survey sponsored by sleeping pill manufacturers?

Yep. It really depends on the individual. Some need more; some need less. Just figure out the amount that works best for you and stick with it.

Not all people are created equal....
I've been getting about 3-5 hours/night for about 17-18 years, and managed to do some good research and become a surgeon. My whole family prolly averages 6 hours a night. My wife on the other hand needs about 7-8 - less than that is not good.

Some famous folks who needed less that the average amout of sleep
Ben Franklin 4 hours/night
Tomas Edison 4 hours/night
