My step-grandfather kept his computer in the basement or spare room--some place outside of the main flow of traffic. When it stopped working unexpectedly, he took it to a repair shop. They removed several pounds of dry dogfood that enterprising mice had stored in there. It ran much better after that.

Shades of Pi (or maybe Rucker's The Hacker and the Ants, except that these ones are real rather than virtual).

So, let me get this straight --- Apple computers are buggy?

I had the same horrid thing happen with a UPS. By the time I figured out what was going on and reached for the switch to turn it off, they'd panicked and shorted the whole thing out. Terribly sad and revolting at the same time; the site and smell of thousands of fried ants.

Warmth. Totally. Tiny entrance/exit holes, lots of irregular surface area, and a general feeling of well-being sure don't hurt. If I were an ant, I be in there like... well, like something.

Don't know what could be causing it, but you might want to ask Darren Aronofsky about it. He seems to have some familiarity with Ants invading computer hardware :)
