why do you care how other people use it....and if it varies from the intended use.... it has worked GREAT for me as a means of sharing so far .... looks like your missing the point... sigh

uhhh....simple answer to that....it alows a new way to search while trying to share music.....not only by artist and song title but by genre...because alot of times I may not be looking for something really specific....so if there were others out there who had huge libraries like myself I could use the power itunes has to classify music to my advantage while searching...you can get exposed to new music and share it at the same time.......so I think your Waaaaay missing the point...

it's not a new napster.

it's not a new audiogalaxy.

it's designed so you can LISTEN to someone else's playlist.

yes....you could download...and share.....but just think, just for a minute, about all the software and infrastructure that already exists to allow you to steal music.

so why make iCommune do something it doesn't NEED to do?

Yes my question exactly where do I find a list of servers??? Got it installed and running great used the example server in the read me file off the website, and it works but there is only one person with a couple of songs. Somebody let me in on a list of network servers that will work and have people on them. I have over 10gb of music that I would love to share. THX

Obviously, Oscillate (and many others of us) don't have someone handy who has it installed. Thus the very compelling need for a few URLs out there to try. I have been able to see the two files at the sample URL provided in the README file but no one else's. I have not even managed to see my own files over the network yet. I haven't played with the folder permissions though. There was nothing in the README or on the iCommune site about permissions so I am skeptical about having to do this...

The point is to know people with Macs that you want to share with.

So I have iCommune installed... but no list of servers came with it...

is there a list of available servers to put into the settings so I can see if this works?

I downloaded iCommune off of VersionTracker on Monday . . . tried for hours to get it to work --- deleted it in a rage early Tuesday morning LOL. Then begged for help. Got help on Tuesday night. Tried to download iCommune again to find out it is no longer available!!!! Grrr! People have posted a few places it is still available but they are all iCommune 1.0b1 not b2, so when I try to open iTunes it instantly crashes. Does anyone know where I can get the b2 version still? Pretty please, with a cherry on top?

Why do people WANT to share playlists?

I seem to recall Steve Jobs demoing exactly this feature, but using zero-configuration Rendezvous at MacWorld New York 2002. I wonder how long until iTunes will do this without a plugin?

Currently, iCommune does not change permissions of the shared folders, so if they are not world-readable (and the directories don't have list permissions for others), sharing does not work.

To fix this, you can use chmod a+rx on your shared folders. Make sure that all you shared folders are chmod a+r. Also note that the default shared folder is ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music, even though the URL is ~/Music/.

Try setting "Others" to "read-only" on your Music folder.

I can get the playlist.pls file from my TiBook with a Web browser, but iCommune running on my Pismo doesn't show me any files. It does work against Speth's test server, though.

Doesn't work for me. I've installed it and enabled sharing on both my g4 and my iBook, and I've added each machine to the other's list, yet neither machine can see the other.

Apache is running on both machines and both can be accessed in the web browser, although attempting to visit ~mike/Music on both machines results in 403 Forbidden.

I upgraded to 10.2.3. Now I can edit it if I click on the box and wait a while.

I'm on 10.2.3 and I can't, either, Aaron.

I can't edit the URL in the configuration panel. I'm using 10.2.2. Guess it's time to upgrade.

it'll be fantastic once it's able to interface with iChat and sniff your friends' systems, rather than going through the rigmarole of emailing your server path to friends....

Okay...so this is all very cool and everything, but it just increases the pressure on us all. Before this, we'd go to a conference and have some beers, share some stories, hack some code. Now we do these things, plus there is all the stress of having the _right fucking music_ as well, and everyone can tell if we are listening to the _wrong shit_!

At least etherpeg is mostly anonymous...sure, everyone in the room knows what you are looking at, but they don't know who you are.

what didn't work for you? are you using Jag 10.2.3? some things are broken in earlier versions of Jag...

I couldn't get it to work... Sounds cool tho.
