I don't know for a fact that it was the very first, but the Def Jam Ten Year Anniversary 4xCD box set which was released in 1995 used an LP-style design.

Another place to get non-generic blank CD-Rs is 5inch.com. They have a slightly different version of the vinyl look.

They do run a bit more than the usual blanks, however.

In a similiar vein, the CDs in Rhino Record's 4-cd "Nuggets" set are designed to look like the original 45s of some of the songs on the CDs.

Here's a link to the Rhino Records Nuggets info page.

Hee. Course, you could get most of the same effect with labels if you don't mind burning through a lot of toner or ink...

Pretty groovy (NPI). Here's a place where they can be purchased for about a buck each with shipping.

Anyone know if they actually *are* made out of vinyl - like cd's for videogame sometimes are?

My album (Twink) also uses a vintage 45rpm design on the CD face, which comes in an old-style picture book+single package. Great, huh? :)

(What was that earlier post about spam on blogs?...)

The idea for this may have come from the Cowboy Bebop boxed DVD set, in which the DVDs were made to look like records (probably in order to recall the spirit of bebop music and 45s records).
