to turn off the download manager, go to:
prefs -> navigator -> downloads and select 'open a progress dialog'

and while it doesn't look like you can have links, by default, open in a new tab you can via the 'tabbed browsing' pref (right above the 'download manager' pref, above) open a link in a new tab by control-clicking. if i knew that you were using a pc and not a mac, i'd tell you to right-click on the link and select 'open link in new tab' but one-button mice are just another benefit of having the same vendor make both your hardware and operating system. ;-)

and ANOTHER THING: the Mozilla 1.1 alpha release (which, by my reckoning, is 95% as stable as 1.0 release) allows OS X users to enable Quartz rendering. fun!
