Reminds me of a short story in George R R Martin's "Tuf Voyaging", where these giant squids were completly destroying the economy of a small island-based colony on a mostly tropical ocean world.

The problem with BBC reporting on these things is their photos
are always so small.

So when do we find out that this was the last living specimen of the species?

DaveW: Not likely. Squids have lots of eggs and then in bad
times only a few become adults, in good times lots do. Over-
fishing big fish predators means that this is a good time for
squids.

IA! IA! FHTAGN!!!

Seriously, it's really interesting and strange that there are creatures like this lurking in the abyssal depths off Antarctica.

Is it just me, or do these scientist have the creativity of 5 year olds?
"Hey, what should we call it? We already have a Giant Squid"
"How about the COLLOSAL SQUID!"
What next? The "Ultra Squid" or the "Hyber Humongous Squid"?

Oh, come on, 8 messages, and no one's said it yet?

Well, I, for one, welcome our new collosal cephalopod overlords.

Bloomers: you know that the extra large squid tend to have
ammonia pockets inside them for bouyancy, right? That's gotta
affect the flavor.
